Everybody go tf home I have officially found a worse name for eyes than ‘orbs’
can’t believe I had to read this with my own balls
This is all I could think of, sorry:
being alive is great because there are so many different vegetables you can sauté. but then there are also the horrors
with faith and perseverance, one day we will sauté the horrors
a heartfelt reunion (?)

Millindemalion
Image © Paizo Publishing, accessed at Archives of Nethys here
[Another Wonderland-y monster after the astrosphinx, this is 2e Pathfinder's take on a decidedly madder than usual Mad Hatter. This is one of my favorite monsters in Bestiary 3, and the conversion is fairly close. My main change was to make the status effects it can inflict with its hats a little nastier, as befits a CR 13 monster.]
Millindemalion CR 13 NE Fey This little gnome-like man has leathery skin with discolored lesions on his face and hands. He wears a hat almost as tall as he is, and carries a pair of shears.
There are plenty of stories about kindly fairies assisting mortals to make clothing, clean homes, or even spin straw into gold. When these friendly house fey are abused and mistreated, they may go sour. Boggarts are the most famous of these, but a powerful variant is the millindemalion. Millindemalions are created through exposure to toxic metals, especially the mercury used in hat production. A millindemalion can rapidly create magical hats that force other creatures into strange and disruptive behavior.
A millindemalion is more than capable of just stabbing people to death, and its magical shears are nasty weapons. Still, they prefer to torture rather than to kill, using their magical hats to force their victims to slow down, attack their allies, or simply blind them with animated flaps. Few millindemalions are willing to fight to the death, and often fight using hit and run tactics to minimize full attacks.
All millindemalions have a mania for hats: making them, collecting them, showing them off. Some make hats from the fur, feather and skins of their victims, whereas others slip contact poison into the hats for sale in reputable haberdasheries. They look enough like gnomes that they can disguise themselves as one with relatively little effort. A magical hat may be used as a bribe to gain a millindemalion’s favor, and a millindemalion who desires to disrupt people’s behavior for longer than a few seconds at a time may be on the lookout for cursed magical headgear.

"Shadows on the Balearic Sea" l Andrew McCarthy
every once in a while i still see people saying shit like "undertale was the proof-of-concept for deltarune"
which is a really weird take to me, because like. im not really sure deltarune would be half as compelling without all the shit undertale established. untangling what they are to each other is like, one of the most compelling parts of the experience.
sometimes things arent sequels and they arent pilots and they aren't AUs and they arent unrelated. they're a secret other thing: in conversation with each other.
Or, just maybe... Thats exactly what toby "created undertale and deltarune" fox told us? Like he straight up told us that undertale was his proof of concept for being able to make a game?
Yes, Deltarune would probably not be as compelling without undertale releasing first, however we have little to no actual interaction between the two aside from sharing characters, which is only a thing as toby likely enjoyed writing the characters in undertale and just... Didnt feel like designing a whole new town of monsters when he already had designs?
They arent AUs or any other secret thing... Theyre the proof of concept and the game the creator wanted to make, told to us as such by the game creator.
they have a ton of interaction though? i mean, for one, sans is very clearly the same sans in both games. he stole grillby's and his house from snowdin. he has a secret picture of kris, susie, and noelle from the festival in undertale. that's. that's real weird and jarringly in your face if it was just supposed to be an easter egg.
but more frequently, deltarune does a lot that only makes sense if you had a foundation from undertale. the 7 colored flowers corresponding to the 7 human souls. characters like papyrus and mettaton that we've never seen, but are expected to have an emotional reaction to. things that echo oddly and make the player sort of trip when they encounter them, like gerson being dead and asriel being alive, or catty and bratty becoming friends to fall into the alignment we expect. the many, MANY times the narration waves at something from undertale, or the music carries over. whatever the hell is up with gaster, still. even just thematically, the fact that undertale sets you up to believe all your choices matter, and then deltarune knocks that back down.
undertale isn't connected in the sense that i think the characters are going to like, go visit frisk or something, but it's connected in the way that like, a deconstruction of a fairy tale expects you to be familiar with the original.
i mean yea, undertale was proof-of-concept in the sense that he meant it as a trial run for "am i able to make games," but it seems pretty obvious that while they CAN be experienced separately, deltarune is designed to be experienced AFTER you've played undertale. they're a diptych.
And yet, all of this clearly lines up with a gamedev just... Referencing their past work? Hell earthbound/mother likes to do this stuff and thats what both games are based on. Yes were expecting to have emotional reactions to characters we havent seen but were prominently featured in undertale... Yet none of those heart pull for past characters moments seem to have any relation to the main overall story? Yeah its cool reference and all but you can go all of deltarune without seeing any of that, or knowing anything about undertale, and still enjoy the game exactly as intended.
Just because theres references and potential crossover, does not mean that you can simply ignore the creator's on words on what their work is, a proof of concept and the intended product, which is what you attempted to outright deny in your original post.
Have a good day, go read some of toby's newsletters.
i should have been clearer in my original post, that's on me. i meant that i find it bizarre when people DISMISS undertale as ONLY a proof-of-concept and nothing else. but i kinda think that i clarified that in my response, and dont think saying "hey this maybe is setting some stuff up" is "attempting to outright deny the creators words."
i don't know what you think i'm saying. i don't really understand why you're so against the idea that undertale enhances deltarune and informs it, which is all i've been trying to imply. of course you CAN play deltarune without it. its not like. the 4th book in a series where you'd be totally lost. but i do think you'd be missing huge chunks of the themes, as deltarune is a game about videogames. you also CAN play deltarune without ever knowing there's a weird route, and still get a fulfilling experience. that doesn't make it not matter, or an afterthought, or something people are just reaching with when they take it seriously.
Everything with Sans just screams that Deltarune is in conversation with Undertale. Both stories have the funny skeleton man flirting with the lonely goat woman who left her husband after he did something unforgivable, and in one case he became the internet's favorite character while in the other he would have just been "that insufferable skeleton everybody hates" without the context of the former. It seems so deliberate to me.
