I learned this version of Namaste from sis Omelika Kuumba, my African dance teacher at Spelman. Every day, I walked out of that class with a fresh view of the world around me. Today, my vision is refreshed by things like the wisdom my ancestors left behind, the unyielding support of loved ones, and cool sips of sparkling lemonade in 87 degree sunshine. I lost a grandmother a few days ago. This is the closest death I’ve ever experienced. It was beautiful to see the community I grew up in gathered in love to celebrate her life.
