my melancholy musings

one of my creative writing professors once said that to evaluate a work as good or not, first you ask what the work is attempting to do, and then you evaluate how well it does it. and this is how to judge everything from critical essays to romance novels to snack packaging to theory tracts.

i just know there’s been a point where ilya has said something really sad about his childhood and mr earnest sincerity hollander has shaned his eyes at him and said something about ‘i wish i’d known you then so i could’ve told you it was all gonna be okay’ and ilya has started bawling

The use of different languages in aftg is low key genius. The twins are taught German by Nicky which is an active choice that makes them closer. Jean teaches Kevin French, sharing a part of himself that is trying to be erased. While Neil already knows both French and German because there is some sort of invisible string tying him to them (like the misplaced forever partner thing). And on the evil side of things only Kevin, Jean, and Riko know Japanese because they are unfortunately intrinsically connected by their time in the nest.

so yk how neil inhales cigarette smoke because it reminds him of his mother’s burning body? yeah that’s what kevin does with exy. hope this helps
