𓂃⋆.˚ the first few times it happens, dazai honestly thinks you’re going to come back in twenty minutes. then twenty minutes becomes three hours, three hours becomes the entire night, and he realizes your version of calming down involves completely disappearing from the world until you’re ready to exist again.

𓂃⋆.˚ he starts recognizing the signs before you even stand up. you’ll stop arguing, stare at the floor for a second and quietly grab your jacket, and he’ll already be moving his feet away from the doorway because he knows trying to stop you would only make you leave faster.

𓂃⋆.˚ he’s absolutely the type to say, “don’t get kidnapped while you’re ignoring me,” with the tiniest smile on his face as you walk out. it’s his awkward way of saying he’s worried without making the situation heavier than it already is.

𓂃⋆.˚ if atsushi asks where you are the next day, dazai shrugs and says you’re “doing your little migratory bird routine again,” like it’s the most normal thing in the world, but he checks his phone every ten minutes anyway.

𓂃⋆.˚ you eventually notice that he never spams your messages. it’s always exactly one text.

“remember to eat.” or “found a cat that looks judgmental enough to replace kunikida. wanna see?” and then nothing. he waits.

𓂃⋆.˚ the funniest part is that he somehow always knows when you’re about to come home. kunikida swears it’s impossible, but dazai will suddenly stand up from the agency sofa, stretch, say “they’re back,” and thirty seconds later you’ll walk through the front door, as if he smelled you from afar like a cat.

𓂃⋆.˚ after enough arguments, he starts leaving little things exactly where you’ll see them when you return. your favorite mug is already sitting on the counter, the blanket you always steal is folded on the sofa, and the window is slightly open because he knows you like the sound of the city when you’re trying to think.

𓂃⋆.˚ one time you disappear for almost two days and come back expecting at least one sarcastic comment, only to find him asleep on your side of the couch because he’d apparently decided that was where he’d wait until you felt like existing around people again. no sleeping on the bed since it would feel painfully empty and cold without you.

𓂃⋆.˚ he’ll never admit he was waiting. he’ll just wake up, look at you for half a second and go,

“oh. you’re alive. that’s inconvenient. i had already started mourning.”

𓂃⋆.˚ he learns very quickly that following you is a terrible idea. the one and only time he tried, you somehow noticed him after five minutes and disappeared into a bookstore for three hours out of pure stubbornness until he gave up. he has never tried again.

𓂃⋆.˚ dazai also discovers that you’re much easier to communicate with through completely unrelated topics. you’ll be gone after an argument, he’ll send you a picture of a weird cloud that looks like chuuya, you’ll reply “it doesn’t,” and somehow that’s enough to break the silence without forcing either of you back into the conversation too early.

𓂃⋆.˚ he starts carrying tiny things you’ve accidentally left behind. your hair tie ends up around his wrist, your lighter is somehow in his coat pocket, your chapstick appears in his desk drawer. atsushi eventually asks why he has so much random stuff, and dazai just says, “they’re like a cat. if i keep enough familiar objects around they’ll eventually come home.”

𓂃⋆.˚ one night you ask him why he never gets angry when you leave. he stays quiet for a surprisingly long time before answering. “because i know you’re leaving to breathe, not leaving me.” then he immediately ruins the moment by adding, “besides, if i really wanted to annoy you, i’d come with you.”

𓂃⋆.˚ and the agency slowly gets used to the routine. when you’re gone for a day, nobody asks questions anymore because dazai is still acting exactly like himself, except every time the office door opens his eyes flick toward it for just a second before he goes back to bothering kunikida.

𓂃⋆.˚ the only real change is that every single time you come back, no matter if it’s six hours later or the next evening, dazai somehow ends up standing beside you within five minutes. he isn’t touching you, isn’t asking whether you’re okay and isn’t bringing up the argument again. he’s just… there.

𓂃⋆.˚ when the words leave your mouth, dazai doesn’t answer immediately. he has a habit of responding to almost everything with a joke, a teasing comment or some ridiculous attempt at changing the subject, but this time none of those things come. instead he just looks at you for a few seconds, almost like he’s trying to figure out whether you actually mean it or whether you’re simply having a bad day.

𓂃⋆.˚ the silence is thoughtful. dazai is someone who rarely reacts before understanding the situation, and the more important the person is to him, the more carefully he chooses his words. he knows that sentences like that almost never appear out of nowhere. they usually come from months or years of insecurity, and he has no interest in dismissing them with a quick “that’s not true.”

𓂃⋆.˚ what catches him off guard isn’t the insecurity itself but the direction of it, because if there is one person who has spent an unreasonable amount of time believing they don’t deserve happiness, it’s dazai. hearing somebody he loves say those exact words creates a strange moment where it almost feels like he’s listening to his own thoughts spoken back to him.

𓂃⋆.˚ he’d probably ask you where the idea came from instead of arguing with you. he’s looking for the perfect response but he genuinely wants to understand what happened inside your head that made you believe love has to be earned in the first place. he’d listen without interrupting, letting you explain every irrational fear and every comparison you’ve been making without once telling you that you’re overreacting.

𓂃⋆.˚ if you started listing reasons why somebody better than you would make him happier, he’d let you finish completely before saying anything. he wouldn’t rush to contradict every sentence because he knows insecurities don’t disappear just because somebody else tells you they’re wrong.

𓂃⋆.˚ after listening quietly, he’d probably smile a little, but it wouldn’t be his usual playful smile. it would be small and almost tired, the kind that only appears when he’s being completely genuine.

𓂃⋆.˚ he’d admit that it’s strange hearing you say that because he’s spent most of his own life assuming everyone would eventually realize they could do better than him. he wouldn’t say it dramatically or expect comfort in return. he’d say it the same way someone casually admits they’ve always disliked the rain, as though it has simply existed for so long that he’s accepted it as normal.

𓂃⋆.˚ there would probably be a moment where both of you are sitting there realizing you’ve been carrying almost identical fears from opposite directions. you’re convinced he’s too good for you while he’s quietly wondering why someone like you keeps choosing to stay.

𓂃⋆.˚ i don’t think dazai would ever try to convince you by listing your positive qualities or insisting you’re perfect. he’s far too observant for that. he knows you’re flawed because he notices everything. he knows you get impatient sometimes, that you overthink harmless conversations, that you apologize for things that don’t need apologizing and retreat into yourself whenever you’re convinced you’ve become inconvenient.

the important part is that none of those things make him want to leave, that’s probably what he’d tell you: that he sees all of those things already, that he’s been aware of them for a long time and that he still wakes up every day and chooses to spend his time with you without feeling forced into it.

𓂃⋆.˚ i actually think he’d become quieter after the conversation instead of more affectionate. dazai understands that repeating “you’re worthy of love” ten times isn’t magically going to rewrite years of self-doubt, so instead he’d go back to doing what he always does: he’d save you a seat beside him without asking, he’d remember to bring you the drink you like when everyone else is getting coffee, he’d send you some completely nonsensical article at two in the morning because it reminded him of something you said three months ago, he’d casually reach for your hand while walking without even thinking about it.

𓂃⋆.˚ none of those actions would be performed like grand romantic gestures. to him they’d simply be ordinary habits, but that’s exactly why they matter so much. they’re unconscious decisions that happen because somewhere along the way your presence became part of his everyday life.
