oh thank g*d, finally a normal anonymous post. i’m so glad you’re here [shakes your hand feverishly]

first of all, thank you so much!! i’m so honored to hear you say that, i hope i make more things in the future that you will love!!

as for the way i went about practicing, i did a lot of daily sketches in the first month. i made the small goal of filling one tiny sticky note with whatever i wanted to draw (which at the times was a lot of disembodied eyes, mouths, and facial features). it was less about drawing well and more about making it a habit. the most important thing was that there would always be one little sticky note by the end of each day, no excuses. i had to prove to myself drawing was not a big, scary ordeal and that in achieving that small goal each day, i could trust myself later on to achieve bigger goals.

then: the bigger goals! lots of studies! making use of photo references or tutorials! actually drawing in a sketchbook! if you’re interested i can point you to my own collection of references but i really recommend getting a sideblog or pinterest to compile references.

a big part of my process is failing smart. with everything i draw, i don’t set out for perfect, i aim for better than yesterday. after i draw something, i say ‘mega sexy of me to create something out of nothing. now, what parts do i change about how i draw so i can make tomorrow’s work better?’ baby step that shit! maybe all you do is draw one part of a nose sharper, or add a line to show the crease of an eye. it doesn’t even have to work out in the end! if you go wrong at least you know what not to do next time

i have to reiterate: use references. the difference it makes is huge. before i start drawing anything i literally open up my reference pins and sideblog. learn from existing artists that you like and deconstruct their style in shapes and lines (however, i advise you not use the work of self-made artists for this i.e. tumblr/twitter/pixiv artists. i mean use well-known artist models like leyendecker or norman rockwell etc). trace over reference images and then freehand it on the second go!

forgive the cliché, but when one’s signature move is blunt-force trauma via brogues, i think i’m entitled to say i’m very much dressed to kill.
