honestly if you want to know what beth is like, one time i didn’t laugh at her joke like at all and she paused the show we were watching because she legit thought my internet went out because i didn’t laugh at her joke

it’s still one of the funniest things that has ever happened to me literally her first thought wasn’t ‘oh it wasn’t that funny’ it was ‘lena’s internet must have gone out thats the only logical explanation as to why she didn’t laugh at my joke’ 

it comes with an ACHE   ,   something painful  ,   a strike of ice to the center of her chest   .   something pulsating   ,   nagging   .   a reminder that boys who flew with dragons could never quite be tamed   ,   either   .   a reminder that boys with wild hearts lived on the wind   ,   a messy contradiction   ,   flimsy and fleeting and always moving   ,   but still constant   .   still strong   .   she feels hiccup when he’s AROUND   ,   but also when he’s gone   .

she cannot lie to him   ,   tell him he belongs here permanently   ,   tell him he has nothing to think about   .   hiccup haddock always belonged to a map   ,   to exploration   ,   to creation and discovery and the unknown   .   chief was a HANDSOME title on him   .   but so was explorer   .   

smile is tinged SAD   ,   a bittersweet sort of pull   ,   like underripe fruit   ,   like heartbreak   .   her voice doesn’t waver   .      ❛    i’ll always support you   ,   hiccup   .   no matter what you do   .   you know that   .    ❜

maybe she should be a little nicer   .   he’s alone   —   astrid knows pack mentality SOFTENS when the rest of the group isn’t around for support   .   no one is as STRONG on their own when they’re used to numbers   .   but she’s TIRED   ,   would be home if not for the sponge in her hand   ,   the graffiti on the side of the gym   .      ❛    hey   —   mind telling your friend that if i see him carrying a spray can the next time he comes around   ,   i’ll kill him   .   it’s not a question   .    ❜      tone BITING   ,   punctuated with a harsh drag of soaped up sponge against cement   .      ❛    thanks   .    ❜

❛    stop exaggerating   —   i’m SURE it won’t be that b   —    ❜      she is FORCED to swallow her words   ;   they tumble back down her throat painful   ,   like jagged glass   ,   eyes big at the LOOK of all this   .   the manor   ,   the glistening chandeliers   ,   the women in ballgowns   —   if she felt overdressed before   ,   that CERTAINLY didn’t seem the case now   .   they could’ve walked in to the release of DOVES and it hardly would’ve made a difference   .

everything is champagne pink soft   ,   glittering floors and the twinkle of expensive jewelry   ,   designer suits and ties   .   for a moment   ,   she wants to step NEARER to kaz out of companionship   ,   a need to not feel so SMALL   ,   but the last thing she wants his to have to worry about his comfort as well   .   she keeps her respectable distance   ,   opts to dig her nails into her palms as a GROUNDING measure instead   .   it probably works better than a closeness would have   .      ❛    okay   ,   i stand corrected   .   god   ,   just how much money did they get   ?    ❜

❛    if you’re trying to be funny right now   ,   hiccup   ,   it’s not working   .    ❜      the water is at their KNEES   ,   now   ,   and slowly climbing   —   her legs feel weighted as she wades   ,   paces   ,   thinks   .   the LUCKY ones   —   sure   .   leave it to them to get the one blocked off cave that gets FULLY submerged upon high tide   .   their only EXIT is how they came in   —   from the top   .

getting back out meant waiting for the water to rise completely   .   the thought almost leaves her fearful   ,   but it’s all she has   .      ❛    i give it another fifteen minutes   .   once the water lifts us to the opening   ,   we have to swim our way out   .   if we time it right   ,   we shouldn’t have to hold our breaths for too long   .   it’ll be   —   fine   .    ❜
