Doubt was firmly planted in his mind. Everything that happened to Hans was deserved. He acted without remorse at the time, it only made sense that he would regret every single moment every single day afterward. Even so, he seemed surprised at Elsa’s question.
“Queen Elsa, I promise to you that regicide was not the reason I came to Arendelle. While it is true I am the youngest of thirteen and will never have a throne, that was never a problem in my mind. I was sent here on behalf of my father - the King of the Southern Isles.” His expression fell, changing to one of defeat. He looked at Elsa, but his eyes quickly dropped to the floor.
“My words mean nothing after everything I did but… I am so sorry.”
Elsa listened in silence, studying his expressions, words, and tone. Due to her lack of socializing with the world for a number of years, she was not the best at reading individuals, but she had improved since she had become Queen. Despite her lack of expertise, she did feel he was being truthful.
Of course, this did not mean she was now willing to trust him with anyone’s life, but she would not ask that question again.
“Then magic was responsible for your actions, and I will do everything I can to help you find a cure,” she replied more gently, “I truly would like to accept your apology, and hope to one day... until then, I am sure you understand my taking precautions.”
