Want to get involved?

To do so, you can support War Child’s initiative by organizing a fundraising event to raise funds for their international projects. Doing fundraising leads to:

Working with your community

Advocating and raising awareness about children and war

Inspiring others to be involved and spread the word

War Child provides individuals and groups interested in fundraising with help to ensure their event is a success. To fundraise register your event using the on-line registry system, once registered you can send friends invitations, collect donations while keeping track of donations as well.

Volunteer On Campus – “Stir things up on Campus”

War Child’s Campus Outreach Program, gathers students from all over Canada. This has been going on for three years now with over 16 campuses in Canada. War Child’s campus reps advocate and show their dedication on campus to support children affected by war.

War Child relies on the campus reps to get the word out and fundraise for them by:

•Helping kids caught up in war.

•Fighting for children’s rights.

•Learning about the issues.

•Networking with students across the country.

It is important that campus reps engage and encourage others to get more involved. They can do this by starting possible War Child groups on their campus and join the chapter at their schools. War Child highly relies on their campus reps and groups to advocate for their cause all over Canada.

                                         War Child Volunteers

      War Child’s volunteers are a team of committed and outgoing people who represent War Child across the continent. As a small NGO, their volunteer’s team plays a huge role in getting the word out and attending events and promoting awareness campaigns.

     War Child is committed to presenting a rewarding experience that matches the abilities and needs of those volunteering. If you apply for a volunteer position, you are helping by lending your capabilities to the organization.

     Many of their volunteer positions take place within the Toronto area. War Child’s Community Catalyst is a position within War Child that encourages volunteers to connect their personal networks and communities with War Child.  Community Catalysts take on projects such as organizing fundraisers, raising awareness, or participating in War Child’s national campaigns. Community Catalysts help to inform people about War Child’s projects, in hopes that they too will become supporters.

The Democratic of Congo(DRC)- Access to Education

The conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ended with a cease-fire agreement in 2008, however in North and South Kivu provinces violence still continues. The conflict claimed 70% of the school’s, displaced qualified teachers and caused brutal consequences for children.

 War Child has helped DRC in rebuilding their education system within the Fizi District, by implementing an educational revitalization program. War Child has re-habilitated and re-equipped 38 schools and provided training for teachers along with creating after-school programming to vulnerable youth. They have provided 12,564 children with greater access to education since 2005. They have also created after-school numeracy and literacy classes for over 2,500 children not in schooling, who face challenges with returning to the standard education system.

 Violence against women and children is a serious issue, due to post conflict stability in the DRC. War Child has extended its attention to improve sexual and gender-based violence prevention and response (SGBV). This initiative’s goals is to provide organizations with the necessary tools and guidelines to help them in supporting community-based SGBV programming to build local partners and influence change.

 Furthermore War Child has partnered with local radio stations, broadcasting child-led radio shows to advocate and spread the word about child rights issues in the region.

For many years now, women in Afghanistan are faced with numerous challenges including their education, health and their human rights which are rated among the lowest in the entire world. Due to many years of conflict and oppression, this has left thousand of Afghan women with very little options for economic power. A lot of these women are widows by conflict and are left to care for their children alone without having any education or marketable skills. With this being said, there is little opportunity for these women to generate income for themselves and their children. This project was created by War Child in 2003 setting a goal to work with the Afghanistan Women’s Council to help enhance their lives and their children. This project has been placed in the poorest neighbourhood’s of Kabul and Jalalabad that will help these women in basic literacy, numeracy and life skills, along with business management and access to loans. In order for this project to be successful and bring in a supportive environment for women and their children, War Child has enforced that male community members are brought in to raise awareness about positive parenting strategies and how women and children deserve the right to be educated. This project has been a great success and has given women a better opportunity to support their children and become financially independent in their family. A lot of these women have become successful business owners and are now helping other women in their community to achieve the same education and independence. This has allowed women to become more confident with themselves and their work.

Due to this project having such a great success rate, War Child is looking to create more of these projects in additional provinces of Afghanistan.

War Child is a proud partner with Jackson-Trigg’s Niagara Estate Winery (Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON) for the second year bringing together music performances with amazing food and wine on their annual holiday fundraiser on November 29th, 2013.

Whats Next for Syria?

The Syrian Civil war is a brutal conflict in Syria between the Government forces and various rebel groups. With over 100,000 causalities it has been ongoing for 2 years and 6 months with no end in sight.

The conflict has caused the displacement of between 4 to 5 million Syrians, and another 2 million refugees have fled to Neighbouring countries, 1 million of which are children. Leaving many children in Syria vulnerable as they struggle to meet their basic needs and necessities. Many Children have lost their parents and have been forced into an early marriage, or child labour since the conflict has started.

War Child UK have set up 8 safe places for over 1,000 child refugees. Here children can receive counseling and have a sanctuary to come to every day. They have also helped them resume their schooling. War Child Holland is now running this project. War Child Canada is also focused on supporting to rebuild the communities and restore the childhoods of boys and girls. Together with the Non-governmental community they are determined to provide long-term response to help the region as a whole once the war has ended.

 Women and children are usually the victims of severe human rights violations, especially sexual violence. War Child fights for their rights so that they are understood and respected by communities and the law enforcement officials who oversee them. War Child provides legal assistance to children and women who need protection, community sensitization and training of legal and justice officials.

Families from war torn areas often end up not being able to provide basic needs for their children. A very important aspect of War Child’s programming is vocational training. This program aims to provide multiple opportunities for young people to gain skills that they will need to secure employment and income for themselves and their families. War Child also gives them opportunities to set up their own small businesses.

“A stable family income improves children’s prospects, by providing them with easier access to basic needs and the building blocks for a secure future.”

Education is every child’s right. War Child’s education program provides children and youth with multiple opportunities for learning in protected areas away from all the violence and abuse. Where formal education can’t be taught to the children, War Child works towards re-building schools, provide catch-up education programs and training in basic life skills
