A smirk. “Then I’ll just blow you away with how capable I am, nano ja.” Sadly for you, Jade, Patty sees far more as a challenge than an insult. Something she needs to prove wrong to show how great she can be. But. Two could play this game and she was witty at times too.

“Ya know, judging a lady on their height and making assumptions is rude, nano ja. Andya know what they say about assumptions~ They make asses outta people~”

It didn’t matter is she was hanging from the ceiling in a carpet of being puked up by a merman, she was going to prove him wrong.

“Oh? Well, then by all means, I can’t wait to be proven wrong.”

He says it in that same, infuriating manner that he says nearly everything—the one in which he knows speaking in such a tone ( carefree, upbeat, and thoroughly mocking ) will only serve to antagonize his companion further. Her determination and spunk might be considered ‘motivational’ or ‘inspirational’ to some with lesser expectations of the world around them. For Jade? Well, he finds rebellion in the face of certain tragedy refreshing only to the degree that he suspends belief. Mostly, he just prepares himself for disappointment when it is ultimately revealed that they make themselves out to be more than they are.

If she can somehow navigate her way out of her predicament? He’ll at least be satisfied enough to stick around for a little while longer.

“I’m not treating you like a child because you appear as one.” There is Anise, after all, who is quite a capable individual despite her age.

“I’m treating you like a child because you appear to be incapable of handling the situation by yourself.”

But where would the fun be in that?

“Quite elaborate—I do wonder if the data gained in such a place is equivalent to its grandiose appearance.” The snide tone he remarks to himself with suggests that he’s positive the two are on uneven footing.

SHIRO’S NOT at all surprised in the statements the colonel makes. He stays still in his seat with his hands held tightly in lap while his lips pursed with uncertainty.

It was no use holding it in anymore, so he closes his eyes with a deep sigh, letting the tension pool out from his body, and his lips release into a soft smile.

 “Insightful as ever, sir,” he notes, lifting his head to meet his master’s eyes—or at least his face in general, before they dart away again. “I have been wondering over my past, yes. I’ve been having a hard time remembering things—both now and when I try to recall things in the past.”

It was hard to swallow that truth—hard to admit it too. It causes doubts in his head that made it difficult to fully serve Mr. Curtis, and wracked the young boy himself with unneeded anxiety. 

Another sigh. “I guess that… I’m wondering why? Why can’t I.. remember my own parents? Or how I even got here?”

So, he was a little off the mark? No matter—his prediction was close enough and the small elaboration was all he needed to get the full picture. It’s a more specific worry and one not as easily satiated by just talk. He wants answers. Of course, there are parts of that mystery which the colonel has no intention of revealing, and as long as Shiro doesn’t discover the whole truth, who’s to say the lies Jade feeds him aren’t reality?

“It’s quite common for traumatic events during childhood to cause amnesia. I’m afraid there are no specifics I can share with you, but it isn’t as alarming as you might think. Indeed, situations like yours are found all over.”

There’s truth in that, too—these days there are replicas everywhere and none of them can remember a past which they did not live. Of course, they are aware of their situation and therefore have far more closure than his servant.

The last of the colonel’s breakfast is carefully tucked away between lips which spill that mixture of truth and lies—everyone is aware he gives no straight answers and yet they dissect his words over and over again to determine which might be found accurate. But he doesn’t wish for the masses at his door, asking for advice or answers or help. And so he leaves them wanting and dissatisfied every time in hopes of punishing their eager optimism.

Most answers, he believes, should be discovered by the one asking the question. Not handed over on a silver platter. For sure, he had to reach his own conclusions about himself and the world around him.

“Fortunately for you, I’ve also researched memory loss quite significantly. There are some methods that may allow you to recall a few of those lost memories. Of course, I can’t guarantee any of it will work, but it may be worth a try, no?”

He knows these tactics will yield no results. He knows he provides false hope with the only goal to appear as though he’s tried to help. He knows this outstretched hand he offers will only prove to let the boy down.
