An edit of a photo of the Prospect Park Water Tower, also known as the "Witch's Hat Tower" or just "The Tower," in Minneapolis. The Tower is rumored to have been the inspiration for Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" when he was attending the University of Minnesota. He would have been able to see The Tower from his home in Dinkytown, a district of the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood in Minneapolis in which many students live. "All Along the Watchtower" was famously covered by Jimi Hendrix, topping charts after it's release. Dylan was so impressed with Hendrix's version that it influenced the way he continued to perform it.
It's also a great spot to play out an epic fantasy roleplay.

tourists are posting pictures from several different places in the country and tagging them with the name "gjaldskylda". they seem to be under the impression that it's the toponym of the beautiful waterfall/lava field/mountain/etc. they're visiting.
gjaldskylda means "you have to pay to park here" and it's on an unreasonable amount of signs

One of my favorite things is taking someone to the Great Lakes for the first time - or describing how you can fly over them and see only hundreds of miles of glittering blue water and no coasts at all; how they have their own Coast Guard (the only lakes to do so); that the Earth's rotation steers their currents; that they're studied using ocean models; that they have wrecked more than 6000 ships - and watch them realize that the word "lake" is misleading and that they had no idea of the size and majesty of them at all.
As a native Michigander who moved hundreds of miles away, I miss those lakes like a pain.

This sculpture of the Flathead Lake Monster (lovingly nicknamed “Petra” by the sculptor), was unveiled in September of 2024. Created by artist John Leon, the sculpture took two years to complete. It is located in Sacajawea City Park in Polson, Montana. The beautiful representation of a friendly lake monster is 25 feet in length and made of bronze.
There have been around 100 reported sightings of the fabled Flathead Lake Monster in Montana. The monster is typically described as eel-like in shape and measures anywhere from 20 to 40 feet long. The color of the creature is typically described as brown, however, others say it is blue-black with grey eyes. Its head is shaped like a ball and when sighted, it has humps that rise above the water, often being compared to Loch Ness Monster sightings. It was first sighted in the 1800s and is still sighted to this day.
