Percy was suicidal even before Tartarus. When he falls into the River Cocytus, he is fully prepared to die, even agreeing with the voices. He has clearly had these thoughts before. 

“…Thing is, as I was choking just now, I kept thinking: this is payback for Akhlys. The Fates are letting me die the same way I tried to kill that goddess. And… honestly, a part of me felt I deserved it. That’s why I didn’t try to control the giant’s poison and move it away from me.”

Percy could have easily moved the poison away from him but he let himself be tortured. 

Jason not even alarmed by this! He did not comfort him! His only response was “I think I get it.”

You can tell Percy was waiting for him to say more but he didn’t. 

Then, this entire scene was brushed aside. 

Then Rick brings this scene back up in the new Magnus Chase book but presents it as a joke. This is a serious scene and he just presents it as a funny moment. 

Annabeth even says “I didn’t know that,” and I hope she realizes that something is wrong with that because he’s a son of Poseidon and shouldn’t need saving down there. 

I totally, 100% believe that the only way Percy would ever willingly join a quest without anything in return is because if the quest isn’t finished it will directly affect him or his loved ones (i.e. The world ending ones or ones that directly target his loved ones).
