Deeks walked into his apartment but something was off. He was gone for a week but the dish towel was on the counter, not on the faucet. He quietly put his bag down and pulled out his gun. The living room and kitchen were clear. Moving to the bedroom, Deeks spied his guest.
“A week of playing house wasn’t enough?” Deeks said as he reholstered his weapon.
Kensi smiled. “A week of playing we were playing house was plenty. Now I’m looking for more return to normal.”
Deeks took off his jacket and leaned on his dresser. Kensi was making herself at home on his bed with a big glass of water with some ice. “Normal?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“In the neighborhood. We’re back in apartments, not some monstrously large house. That bathroom was bigger than my apartment.”
“A little less messy, though.”
“Yeah, about that. Why did you have to complain about my alleged messiness in Ops? Nobody cared.”
“First, alleged is doing a lot of work in that statement. Second, it would have been…” Deeks tried to find the word that was going to keep Kensi’s mood, and more importantly Kensi, right where she was. “…out of character for me not to complain about your confirmed messiness.”
“And you wouldn’t want to be out of character.”
“Not after we got the birds and the bees speech from Hetty right after our visit to Ops.”
Kensi chuckled. “I didn’t see that coming.”
“Oh, I did. Part of the reason to pick a fight.”
“Because if we’re arguing…
"Bickering,” Deeks disagreed. “Arguing is a stretch.”
“Noted. If we were bickering, not much time to do anything else.”
“Not that there was much time to do anything else.”
“I don’t think the place was bugged. Russians or our guys.”
“Trust but verify. I wasn’t having any conversation in a friend of Hetty’s house I wouldn’t have right in front of Hetty.”
“You’re getting paranoid.”
“Sam and Nell had a long talk to me after getting shot. Was retrained in public awareness protocol and private security protocol. Nell gave me this nice little tool that beeps if there is a listening device in a room.”
“She didn’t give me one.”
“Your birthday is in two months – I’ll mention it to Nell.”
“Why didn’t you check the General’s house with your little tool?”
“I figure an NCIS tool to find listening devices doesn’t look for NCIS listening devices.”
Kensi tilted her head. “Pretty smart.”
“Living with you for a week rubbed off on me.”
“Anything else rubbed off on you?”
Deeks took off his tee-shirt and made his way to the bed. “I think a pair of furry handcuffs could also be a birthday gift in two months.”
“Happy birthday to me!” Kensi said as she kissed him.
