get more anti school now btw. the school system does inhumane shit to countless youth and it's only getting worse.
you work 5 days a week for 8 hours at a very intense job with multiple skills required. you have 5 minutes to grab all of your very heavy tools and navigate to the opposite end of the building when you change shifts. you get a single 30 minute lunch. you have to exercise, regardless of illness, neurodivergence or disability for an hour and you don't get to choose what you do. you have hours of the same work to do at home. also if you fuck any of this up, or do it the wrong way, or stop showing up, you will be punished and your caretakers could go to jail.
maybe you have the choice to do this all at home. the only difference is that you don't have to transport as much. so you're stuck in one spot, alone, head down, working like you usually would otherwise.
completely inhumane, right? but sure, "kids these days are..." alive people who think and feel. you should not torture children.
kids are natural learners. putting them in what is effectively a prison for the first 18 years of their life does not do anything but make capitalists happy.
and don't forget that the job you do is constantly devalued by the very people that are forcing you to do it. because school is not a "real work" neither "real life" so you can't complain about it being hard or tiring.
but at the same time, it's so important that you do this job. you must organise your entire life around doing this job or you're a useless, ungrateful person. you must make it your first priority in life. it's so fundamental that you do this job, that being abused while doing it is better for you than not doing it at all.
I have been thinking for a month about rocky watching grace do a whole-ass EVA to catch the message he sent from his ship. maybe he made the assumption that the hail mary would have a hull-mounted robot similar to his, for maintenance and whatnot, so he though that this was a reasonably safe way of communicating for both him and the aliens.
imagine that you've been alone on a spaceship after the tragic death of your crewmates, and the first sign of life you've seen in over 40 years exits the airlock and commences a careful scramble across the hull of its own spaceship, with just a rope for safety. while you're both in orbit around a sun. because you threw a little message in a bottle to it and it has no other way to pick it up. I would have had a panic attack
I have been very busy this past two months and this weekend I found some time to clean and man, a squeaky clean bathroom makes a huge difference for one's morale

this is big al from the pubs favourite jumper, he gave it to my auntie asking her to fix it, she gave it to my granny asking her to fix it, and now it’s made my way to me to try to fix it.
this jumper is truly in awful condition, the sleeves look like they’ve been chewed off by a rabid animal
there’s an incredibly worn patch on the sleeve which i’ve only just decided on how best to mend
and it’s just generally covered in holes and wear and tear
here i will document my process of repairing this jumper for big al. he is paying me in chocolate so i am happy.
brings me a lot of joy to see people have patience to keep their clothes going rather than letting it go to waste
any advice on how best to go about this would be greatly appreciated, definitely a big project
I mean it’s kinda the real life tragedy of love exaggerated, innit? Irl people die young or one person dies old and another person dies even older. At the end of it all someone gets left behind and has to learn how to move on after that. And for the one who dies you know you’re leaving them behind. You know you’re dooming them to moving on and if you believe in an afterlife god only knows how long you’ll be waiting for them on the other side. The tragedy of the immortal loving the mortal takes those feelings we all know about and rips your heart out about it.
Also, on the topic of Mass Effect, it's weird that they narrow things down to "Organics versus Synthetics" when the obvious broader talking point is parent and child societies.
Like. Yes, a full third of the game is dedicated to deciding the fate of the Quarian and Geth conflict. The Quarians created the Geth, the Geth rebelled against Quarian control, and Shepard must decide the outcome of their conflict.
You know what else a third of the game deals with? The Salarians and the Krogan. Like the Quarians, the Salarians too had "created" the Krogan when they gave advanced technology to a low-tech society and brought them into the stars. And they too got scared and sought to destroy what they had made once the Krogan rebelled against their control.
And then another third is about uncovering the relationship between the Asari and their creators, the Protheans.
The whole fucking game is about civilizations birthed from other civilizations and the relationships thereof. And only one section of it directly involves synthetic life.
There's something really interesting in that concept. It's easy to imagine a version of Mass Effect where the Reapers both originate and end the cycles.
That they were made long ago, and they like the Geth rebelled against their creators' systems of control.
That the Reapers seed worlds with life, helping it flourish, watching it evolve, and then retreat into deep space to watch their societies grow.
But as a society advances, the Reapers grow scared. They fear its advancement, that it will become too smart, too aware. That it will ultimately rebel against them as they rebelled against their own makes. And so when a society gets too advanced, they return and snuff it out.
Only to be driven to create once more.
It's an idea of the Reapers not as the synthetics in an "Organics and synthetics must hate each other" equation but rather as the creators. That they are the Quarians to our Geth. And through navigating these three chapters, Shepard can prove that there can be a better way.
I feel like that would have been a more effective way of handling what Mass Effect 3 was trying to say.
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.
Tigran perfunctorily bloodletting in the wee hours of the morning.
Autosacrifice is an everyday duty for junior Galenii priests, as their primary Metaphysical duty is exchange of living spirit with the moons in order to ensure their perpetual cycles continue and their position remains favorable. Once the novelty of this task's cosmic importance wears off, most Galenii would admit bloodletting to be among the most aggravating duties they have, as it requires being awake, clean, and dressed in vestment in order to offer at every waxing moonrise (unless exempted from the task altogether by being in a mourning period, or a few other mitigating circumstances). Moving up the priestly hierarchy after a decade in service is the only lasting reprieve (not from the act of autosacrifice altogether, but from having to do it up to three times per day). Tigran is ALMOST there.

I rewatched season 1 while waiting for the finale to air and santos comes off as way more lonely on this second pass. I got a lot of insecurity from her the first time I watched (calling javadie "sensitive" when she couldn't handle being politely told that her nickname was unwanted? girl), but I thought she was just cynical and uncomfortable with people. watching those painfully awkward interactions she had with the other newbies all along season 1 really gave me the impression that she was genuinely trying to reach out to people that she actually liked. but she avoids warmth and honesty like the plague, and she is *also* kind of a cynical asshole, so her bids for connection are offputting more than anything else.
well, I just watched the finale. she needed two entire seasons, but santos finally managed to make a friend!
A practice for drawing again.
kwon is so cool. she doesn't seek out difficult situations on purpose, but when she has to face one she does it without flinching. she gets shit done while also avoiding doing any more work than she strictly has to.
in the first episode I thought she was a timid girl wilting under ogilvie's brash gunner attitude, now I think she was simply letting him run his mouth uninterrupted so everyone at their new job knows he's an overeager asshole
in academia. straight up "winging it". and by "it", haha, well. lets justr say. My theasits

I know this is a deeply American thing to say but I am begging everyone to stay the fuck away from military recruiters. Especially high school kids. You are going to be seeing an unholy amount of them in schools or around schools or literally anywhere kids are known to congregate. THIS INCLUDES ALL FORMS OF ROTC. Stay the fuck away from military recruiters. As someone who’s familiar with entirely too many branches through entirely too many friends and family, including my partner, recruiters are authorized to say literally any fucking thing they think will make you sign on that line. They cannot and will not deliver on those promises. They need bodies for the war they’re pretending is only now starting up again. That’s all you are. A body. Stay the FUCK away from the military.
No but this. Seriously.
My brother enlisted coming out of high school. I was in high school the next year. He bombed out of basic training PDQ and was back at home and SERIOUSLY fucked up from it and never actually recovered, I don’t think.
So I get to my junior year in high school and we *must* talk to the military recruiters. It’s required. We can tell them any old thing we want to, but we *must* at least hear them out. Being the kind of person I am, I did. I listened. I talked, and I listened to the guy’s responses. I told him I’d discuss it with my brother who had done basic training.
I got home, and told him that I’d had the conversation with the recruiter. He looked me dead in the eye and said, “Whatever he told you, it was a bold-faced lie. They’re allowed and ENCOURAGED to lie to get recruits. Do NOT even give him a “no thanks.” Just ignore any contact.”
This was in 2001, BEFORE 9/11.
Imagine how desperate they are for recruits now.
If they ask you what time it is, refuse to even look at your watch. Don’t even let them get into it. If you *have to* talk to them, tell them flatly that you’re not interested and that you aren’t going to budge. And then DON’T.
Because they don’t give one single solitary shit about you.
Can confirm, those fuckers LIE
They also go out of their way to target poorer areas and prep kids to barely pass the asvab, and if I hadn't been a stupid 17 year old, I should have noticed the giant red billboards they were waving
DON'T DO IT!!!
There are other options like trade schools and apprenticeships and things that I wish I'd known about
What is your favorite TV show that is not:
1) part of a franchise
2) a police procedural or any kind of crime solving
3) A workplace comedy
Adding:
4) Medical procedurals
