Hello Father. It is lovely seeing a priest on here, let alone a priest so eloquent and articulate! May you please explain the significance of Christ’s temptation? How could satan even think about tempting Christ, seeing that Christ is God?

Thank you for such an encouraging word to me. I’m not so sure how eloquent I am lol. But I try to answer to the best of my abilities.

As for Christ’s temptation by the devil, in the desert, we are not sure that the devil understood the Messianic dignity of Jesus. We are not sure that the devil knew that Jesus was God.

Our Lord Himself downplayed revealing His divinity, because He wished to interact with people in a down to earth way, without overwhelming them with the knowledge of His greatness and majesty. “He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, being made in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:7).

Anyone who is praying, who is fasting, who is in the desert seeking to focus on God and the spiritual life, is going to get the attention of the devil or the demonic spirits. And God will permit such a person to be tempted, to be put to the test, to be proved in their virtue.

This is the significance of Jesus being tempted. He does not wish the easy life. He does not wish comfort and convenience, so that He pretends to be like humans but does not really live the difficulties of human life. Who wants a Savior who is faking the sorrows and temptations of human life? Who wants a Messiah who only takes on flesh, but does not take on our trials, even the trials that the devil subjects us to?

Jesus did battle with the devil. He did not ask His Father to be excused or dispensed from the cunning of satan and the testing of the demon. Jesus fought the devil, in our flesh, not using His majesty as God, but using His prayer, His fasting, and His obedience to every word which proceeds from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

1. Haageocereus versicolor. 2. As carefully as possible, using a small pair of scissors or a craft knife to cut off as much glue as possible. 3. Now is a good time of year to repot it, just remove all the old soil and pot it up in a dry, well-aerated soil mix (such as 50/50 perlite/potting soil) and keep it dry for at least a week afterwards. You could leave it dry until the growing season starts or give it a bit of water every 3-4 weeks to encourage some root growth before the growing season starts properly.
