The Art of Fashion Illustration

A good fashion illustration should not only capture the vision of the designer, it should drive the essence of the times. Simon Ungless

Before I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology, I wouldn't have described clothing sketches as art. Rather, I would have said that the clothing itself was the piece of art. It wasn't until I took a fashion illustration course that I learned that every part of the design process is art.

In class I learned the rules for sketching the fashion model's proportions. I felt safe drawing within these guidelines. THe key is learnings art when we show our style or our individuality in our sketches.

In The Art of Fashion Illustration Somer Flaherty Tejwani shows us what has pushed the masters of fashion design and illustration to the top. Giving us advice and tips from fashion icons, she gives us hints on how to create our own style.

Blank silhouettes are included at the back of the book and can be copied to get started on your own fashion illustrations. From the colors you see at the grocery store to the patterns in your latte, look for inspiration all around you!
