in the midst of the turbulent sea that was your sophomore year of high school, there was one rock of solace you found to cling to: lily.
first she was the plucky transfer student in your geometry class, sitting at the seat in front of you and constantly readjusting the pink streaks in her long, curly blonde hair. she smelled like cherries, and you got a whiff everytime she turned around to crack a joke during your teacher's lectures on the importance of homework. more than that, you got a new, bubbly feeling in your chest.
"want some?" she had asked one afternoon, extending a pack of pink lemonade gum.
"i thought i was the only one who liked that kind," you smiled, taking a stick from the carton. "thanks."
the two of you spent the rest of the fall finding more similarities; that you were both learning guitar, both hated ms. long and her mind-numbing proofs, agreed that billie eilish was a musical genius, and that you even lived in the same neighborhood. you started riding the same bus home, sharing AirPods and chatting the whole way. it felt like more than friendship—the way she'd run her fingers through your hair, how your arms somehow always ended up touching, or the way she always gave you a quick kiss on the cheek when the bus stopped at her house, sending the hairs on your neck into a frenzy.

with the tide of the year came the winter formal. naturally, you two went together—not that anyone in your family was aware of that matter. you told your father you were just going to go with a group, and when he insisted on taking a photo of your matching dresses, it was only ever in the midst of your other friends. lily pinned your corsage on in the backseat of the car, only once you had left the driveway.
it wasn't like you were necessarily afraid. your family wasn't religious, in fact far from it, but you still worried that the prospect of defying the norm and the societal expectations of heterosexuality would be a disappointment to them. sure, your father had plenty of gay friends, but how would he react knowing that he'd never have a son-in-law to bond with? what if the "gay" jokes he made online were more than that, cloaks for an actual disapproval? you didn't necessarily want to find that out.
it was for these reasons that normally your secrecy wouldn't allow your relationship to come home with you. but tonight was different. matty and gabi had planned a night out, and promised you an empty house for any after-dance gatherings. they'd probably be out late, you figured, giving you time to sneak lily in and out before anyone noticed you were more than just two best friends. so, after being dropped off by the night's designated driver, you tipsily shuffled into the house, and made your way upstairs to your bedroom.
as you and lily got settled, you were blissfully unaware that your fathers car was drifting down the freeway, and would soon be approaching the driveway. approaching the front door, approaching your bedroom to say hello to you and whoever it was the other set of shoes by the doormat belonged to. but you were too oblivious, the music too loud, too caught up overall in the moment, to notice.
then the door creaked open. "i'm home, love, how was—" matty's eyes widened at what he saw as he peered through the crack. you jolted up, lily rolling off you and scrambling to put her dress back on.
"fuck, i'm sorry," you said, frantically trying to wipe her lipstick off of your mouth. "um, i think—"
"I think I'm gonna go," lily gave a sympathetic smile. "i'll see you on Monday, okay?" she pressed a short kiss to your cheek and slipped out the door. you stood at the top of the landing, watching her awkwardly shuffle away to the car she'd parked at the other end of the street in what ended up being a futile attempt at flying under the radar.
your father was standing at the kitchen island. when your eyes caught his, you ran back to your bedroom in a mix of shame and rage, slamming the door behind you. he was concerned, but empathized. It was all a part of growing up—thinking back, he'd be mortified too if the same thing had happened to him. he decided the best thing was to give you space, and waited until he heard the volume of your most melodramatic teen angsty playlist decrease.
"can I come in?" he rapped softly on the door.
"oh, now you know how to knock?"
"y/n, please." he heard you sigh, but the doorknob turned reluctantly.
"i don't know what you saw, but I don't want to talk about it," you said, pushing the door closed. your father, however, kept a steady resistance on the frame, holding it open and slipping through to the other side. you groaned.
"can I tell you what I think I saw?" matty asked, coyly. "i think i saw my little girl in puppy love," he teased, trying to ease the tension.
"wait, you're not mad?"
"what would i be mad about?"
"that, i don't know...that I'm...that i..."
"that you like girls? not mad. a little sad you didn't think you could just tell me, though." matty moved towards your desk, pulling the swivel chair out a bit to sit backwards on it, facing you as you sat cross-legged at the foot of your bed, staring at your fidgeting hands. "why is that, love?"
"i just thought you might be upset," you settled on, after a long consideration.
matty let out an instinctive chuckle. "me? upset? me of all people, who had to go to fuckin' Malaysian court for making out with Ross?"
"you call things gay on twitter, like, all the time."
"that's just jokes, y'know?" matty mentally kicked himself. this is exactly why i don't do that shit anymore, he thought, cringing at the thought of his stupid internet ramblings coming back to hurt the people he held close.
"i really like her, dad," your voice softened. "i need you to be okay with that." your father resisted letting a loud "aww" escape his mouth, instead opting to place an affirming hand over yours.

690 days of war and yet nothing shattered me more than seeing my school, the place where I spent 7 years of my life, turned into a military fortress. A place that once held my dreams and childhood now carries only fear and ruins.
fuck i just saw that there are some google street view photo spheres in the gaza strip and now im fucked up
cause the satellite view is recent and its a nightmare just shattered gray expanses of rubble and all these deep ruts through the dirt everywhere that looks like some kind of machinery.
but the photo spheres are from before the buildings were destroyed so there are these cute little courtyard gardens with olive trees and pots with herbs painted in colors and nice little apartment buildings with laundry out to dry on the balconies. and when you zoom out to satellite its just completely obliterated wasteland of rubble and debris
a couple others of the destroyed sites were a greenhouse full of tomato plants and a fountain on the campus of a university where a bunch of girls were sitting in groups together on the grass talking with their friends
and the google maps labels are still there. "playground" and its just unrecognizable rubble. "lingerie shop" and its just unrecognizable rubble. all the parks and businesses and everything say "temporarily closed."

The selection for books is somewhat limited, but thus far I’ve found some interesting titles. This week I’ve been reading an anthology of sexual encounters which is really helpful for me because I just… didn’t know how to talk about sex in German without sounding like a medical doctor :,D
