I am looking at this graphic on Louis’ latest merchandise for Lyric Drop 1 through the eyes of a fan who has also seen the frame-by-frame complexities of Louis’ Just Like You video, the power of references (including all the queer history) in RBB/SBB, and the masterful story-telling triptych that was the WMI/DLIBYH/KMM videos (which yield even more meaning in hindsight). I see it the context of his own past graphic shirts:  Power Lies Corruption Chaos, Build Your Own Future, and No Smile, No Service (all linked to X Factor, oBvioUSly). I see it in his triangle tattoo, and its pink echo in the Miss You video. There is a veritable laundry list of examples….

Hidden/double meanings are Louis stock-in-trade. Plausible deniability is his friend. I am not about to dismiss this latest merch graphic, especially given it is his first post-Syco effort. DNA is a well known powder-keg issue in this fandom, and the reference to it here is remarkably unambiguous (not to mention the added fan observations of a possible gate and the symbol pattern ** ***). Out of the myriad lyrics available to Louis, this is what he chose. I do think he honours his beautiful mum, his number one fan.  I think he also honours this covert way to speak. 

No matter how hard you try you can’t stop me now.

Golden is coming! I think that’s like Winter is Coming but like…happier and more in love. It was activated for radio play on September 30th, and today, Sirius XM tweeted H’s introduction to the song (“Hi, this is Harry Styles!”), and then told fans to “TWEET US WHEN YOU THIS HEAR ON AIR!!!!” (typo is theirs, not mine, for a change haha). As of press time, it has not played yet, but there is heavy speculation (on Twitter, take that as you will) that the music video might drop on October 11th (Coming Out Day), which would be a year to the day of the beginning of the Fine Line era, which began with Lights Up. The chances of Sirius XM playing it before it gets released are, like, -10, but when it’s out, I’m sure they WILL have it! 

Harry himself  hasn’t said anything, but, to be honest, he doesn’t have to! People are talking *about him*, that’s for sure. For one, he’s been nominated as “sexiest chart topper” (lol who WRITES  THESE THINGS??) for People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” competition, so, uh. Vote for that, if you’d like, I guess. Then, Shania Twain had an interview with This Morning today, where she said that she and Harry will be doing a song together at some point (“you can count on it!”) and that it’s a “dream collaboration for sure”. It would have been more of a dream collaboration for me if she had not gone on record saying she would vote for Trump because he seems honest, but. What can you do?  To note: this is not a confirmed collaboration, but more of a…tentative assurance that there might maybe be one in the future. Finally, both Fine Line the album and Watermelon Sugar are in Spotify’s Top Albums and Songs of the week. Zayn’s “Better” was also in Spotify’s weekly top songs at #49. If you didn’t know Spotify DID charts, you’re not alone! Apparently, it’s a new feature they’re rolling out, and I’m sure we’re going to see all of the guys’ names on these charts a bunch.  

Liam also celebrated a milestone - Polaroid turns two today! Jonas Blue (one of the co-collaborators on the song) posted a ~polaroid~ featuring himself, Liam, and Lennon Stella (the other collaborator), where he looks cool as a cucumber and the other two are dying of laughter (this doesn’t quite have the same ring as muriendose de la risa, but. Same difference.) Liam reposted this to his Instagram story, saying “amazing memories!” And here’s to many more amazing memories - like his Halloween show: he’s going to be holding makeup and costume competitions for “BIG BIG prizes” - he’ll be contacting everyone with more details about this pre-show. He warns us “remember, I am watching everything”, so be on the lookout for that, as well as merch giveaways during the show! I was gonna do a lowkey costume but now I think I have to step up my game - its ON!!

Niall also came back on social media (if he was ever off of it lol) to thank the BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.) London for awarding him a Pop Award for Nice To Meet You! It was one of the top pop songs of the year, which delights him “cuz I wrote it” along with Julian Bulian (oh, is that not his name?), and he thanked them again for the award (“and medal!”) Congrats, Niall! 

It all comes and goes in waves! And today was definitely a high tide sort of day! Let’s start with the general news: Rolling Stone published an article about pay for play in radio currently. For those who might not know, pay-for-play (or payola)  is the practice of radio stations and label executives brokering deals and promotions in exchange for radio play. This practice was supposed to have been banned after an investigation from former New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in 2004. It’s back in the spotlight now because some text exchanges between Mitch Mills (VP of radio Promotion at Elektra Records) and Steven Zap (a radio promoter who works in contemporary adult radio) revealed that they had been exchanging money for airtime and chart spots. 

This was the second major revelation of the article: the label and the radio were using pay-for-play to manipulate charts. Artists who had been affected by this include P!nk, Panic! At the Disco, Ed Sheeran, and Kelly Clarkson. The thing we need to be 100% clear on is that none of these texts 1.) implicated the artists. There is nothing to suggest they knew this was happening at all, and 2.) when talking about sabotage, this is passive sabotage - they are bumping artists whose labels are paying over those whose labels are not. What was established, was that if the label is not willing to invest in the artist (including, demonstrably, forking cash over for play time) the artist is unlikely to chart. So although the word ‘sabotage’ raises alerts in this fandom, what the stations and labels were colluding to do in this specific case -  bumping down their artists who are hogging the top chart positions for too long to allow others a turn - is not particularly relevant to this fandom’s theories associated with the word sabotage, though of course charting being directly tied to promotional funds invested is relevant to every artist. 

Anyways, onto the gossipy, fun sort of news: Harry was seen in LA in his boat coat (I know, it’s a ship, not ‘just a boat’, and a jacket but my way *rhymes*), a Louis-Eyes- Blue™ Gucci Bag, his rings (!!!), and a “female companion” (JustJared’s words, not mine). It turns out this “female companion” is the friend who protested with Harry (and her boyfriend) in the Black Lives Matter protest earlier this year. Funny how that little piece of information was left out, no? In much cooler news: Kiki Layne (from the Old Guard!!) and Gemma Chan have joined the Don’t Worry Darling cast - although Chan’s character is a mystery, Layne is replacing Dakota Johnson as the neighbor who notices something wrong with this drug induced horror show. 

And, in a discourse lightning round: Niall wished Lewis Capaldi a happy birthday (and let slip that he’d seen him when he had his broken leg earlier in the pandemic), Harry Lambert cosplayed Harry Styles in the Tik Tok patchwork cardigan, Louis pulled the Lyric Drop 1 merch down from store, raising hopes that Lyric Drop TWO is on the horizon, and Zayn answered a comment on instagram which read “…there’s definitely some clues in the music video, BTW your voice sounds more sophisticated which is AWESOME…” with “🙏”. Huh. Guess I better go rewatch the video then!
