I’m a science based person, and I rely on facts. I trust the experts, and the expert in the field of digital image forensics is Hany Farid. I’ve posted a video below the cut in which he briefly describes how AI is used to alter digital media, and the technology used to detect it. 

I don’t expect people to fully watch it (though you should, cause his whole point is don’t just trust what you see on the internet), but the two key takeaways are how media companies (not social media) check and verify digital content before they publish it, and that there is no publicly available AI detection software that can accurately detect AI photos.   

To quote his TED talk, time stamp 11:57.

LN (interviewer): Can you differentiate between things that have, like, Instagram or TikTok filters or Photoshop versus fully AI generated images?

H (Hany Farid): Yes, but it's becoming increasingly more difficult.

LN: Are there any websites a layperson can use to check?

HF: No. By the way, this is a secondary problem, which is now people are creating fake things, then going to fake sites to authenticate them. And it's all getting very weird, don't do it.

Additionally, online programs like AI Metadata Cleaner or Imagera AI exist, and they will wipe all the information that AI detectors read from an AI created image.

So all those screenshots of green lights showing up on AI detector webpages are useless.
