Chapter 1: When it rains, it pours.
It was a busy day on 57th Street in Hell’s Kitchen; the street was fully cramped with impatient, honking cars from every lane of the intersection. Finally, the stoplight changed to green. Grace had three cars ahead of her, and when they started to move, they stopped unexpectedly as they saw two cars from opposite lanes crash into each other’s sides.
The car from the right had come faster than it should have onto the one that was just turning. As soon as she heard the sound while she looked at the scene and a woman came down from her car screaming—¡Call an ambulance!—the memories came flooding into Grace’s mind.
The smell of blood was almost tangible; the pain on her right side seemed to almost hurt as much again. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, but the images didn’t stop coming; the car had crashed on her mother’s side so fiercely it almost crushed her completely. As it got to her father in that second, he couldn’t even react as the air from his lungs got punched out, losing control of the wheel and making the car crash into a light post on his side.
The impact pushed her to the left, hitting her face harshly with the seat in front of her. It caused her a notorious cut, but Grace didn’t even feel it. After the car hit the post, she turned her head and looked through the windows to see the car running from the scene at full speed, she turned her face to the front again. They weren’t talking, they breathed with difficulty, and blood was spilling down the seats, and yet she couldn’t even scream or move a single muscle.
—Move out of the way, idiot!—A man behind her said as he honked very loudly, and she focused on the road again. The people involved in the car crash were stepping down from their cars, they seemed fine, they didn’t present severe injuries, she saw as her eyes scanned the scene and the grip on her wheel loosened.
A traffic officer guided her to take another lane, and she kept driving.
She already was going late, and this path made it slower to get to the FBI quarters. A message popped up on the screen of her car dashboard, "Hurry up, ongoing jewelry robbing". So she did her best and after passing for her uniform she got to the scene.
Jacques was the first to see her, and couldn't but to be cocky—Quite late, Travers, wouldn’t you say?—Grace grumbled as she quickly got next to her colleagues, —I got entertained by a car accident, what's the situation?—
Jennifer answered, —There are hostages at the back of the jewelry, a young couple with a kid, two elders, and a man. And the two saleswomen. Things are a bit tense with the officer that is negotiating—
—We need to de-escalate… Grace, take the negotiation,— another of her colleagues said.
—Yes.—She walked to the cop and dismissed him; on the other side there was a man with a mask and an AK-47.—Hello, I’m Travers. I´ll take the negotiation, so would you like to tell me what y’all want?—she said calmly. The masked robber looked back and chuckled to his friends before answering her,
—Name’s Rocky; these sons of bitches cops won’t even take off the spikes off the main street.—
Grace nodded— It might help if you start letting some hostages out.
—Not until I see you start taking 'em off,— he almost spits out.
Grace sighs, —This is a negotiation, we will give you something when you start cooperating, or we can be here all day.— the man walks back with the other men and after a quick chat he comebacks to her.
—The oldies can get out but the main street has to be cleared.—The old couple got out then and the spikes were taken off the main street, —Now, we want a gas can, the sniper, that I'm sure y'all have, gone and the cars out of the damn way. Oh and I was forgetting, a nice bottle of whiskey.—
—The spikes are off, you have to choose between the sniper or the blockage.—
—No, I don´t, I have plenty of people here still—
—I don´t think you and your friends want the trouble, if someone in there has any kind of medical problem it will get ugly— she says more serious, the man paces around and looks outside.
—Don´t start threatening me bitch, because we will start making things ugly if you keep playing around,— he says getting closer to the door, likely to intimidate.
—It seems you´re a bit nervous, do you have somewhere to be? perhaps someone else waiting to help hiding the loot?— she suppresses an smirk,—I'm merely trying to help you, so, how can I do that?— They stay in silence for some seconds.
—Take the sniper off and give us the gas can, in exchange for the young couple and the sales woman, and take out of the way one of the police cars for the last man— the man said, calmer.
They comply to the demands and after some minutes, the police officers get into their cars, and the thieves get out in a rush, starting the chase with the police. The special agent in charge tells Grace’s team via radio to take the declarations of the hostages, so they drive back to the FBI and distribute the hostages among them. As Grace was taking the declaration of the man, she couldn’t but notice how he looked around the closed room, fidgeted with his hands, and bounced his leg—Excuse me, is there a problem here, sir… Michael… Kemp? — She said as she read the name from the paper. Michael got a bit closer to the table, whispering,
—Truth be told, I have to get out of the country today… I used to work for Fisk. I served my sentence, but Fisk is still alive,—he expressed hastily.
—If you served it, there’s nothing to fear; tell me what you know, and I will make sure you’re safe.— Grace whispered back persuasively; the man doubted before he grabbed a piece of paper and wrote on it a direction.
—I’m too exposed here; meet me at 11 pm there, officer, but if what I tell you is useless, I’ll go this same night.—The man left the interrogation room. Grace looked at the paper: “At the port, back alley.” She doubted all day but decided to go when her day was over. At first glance, it was desolate; the only sound there was the sea waves that were near. She walked until she found the man hiding in the shadows.
—I hear you, Michael—she said seriously. He took a deep breath.
—I worked with the Albanian syndicate, minor jobs. But they were a real deal; they even bribed the deputy mayor, as you know Fisk gave them away to the FBI. But he did because he has more contacts.—He said with his hands on his pockets and looking around.
—As?—
—You know, with the chaos of the blip, the government is struggling to rebuild things. Fisk asked for an appeal for a review of his case that went by private; his lawyer found a way. Word around is he still has powerful contacts. He will go out soon—Grace’s eyes widened and her tone rose a bit,
—How soon?!—
—…By this week, Poindexter was lucky enough his officers vanished with the blip while they were evacuating inmates to a safer area. It will be in the news soon, since they failed to locate him after—Grace grabbed the man’s shoulder,
—Michael, I need you to tell me more, how do you even know that?—
—No, I can't!, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that stupid robbery!, this was a mistake, I can't help.—
—Don't despair, I can help, we just need to go somewhere sa-
she was saying exasperated as a bullet cut through the air near them; she put him behind her and started walking slowly in the alleys as she took off her personal gun. It was like a dark small maze of ship’s depots.
—Stay with me!,— she whispered as she tried guiding them both out of there, but two sturdy men found them; she pushed Michael aside, ordering him to run. One man went after him, and the other engaged in a physical fight with her. No punch took down a man that big, and it wasn’t until getting thrown around and being able to shoot him three times that she could get him off to run to help Michael, but it was too late as she saw the other man smash his face against a wall.
She tried to shoot him but the man got closer quickly and started to run from the monstrous figure herself, trying but inevitably being found again and having her gun get thrown somewhere too far. In a matter of seconds he had her imprisoned with his arms choking her, trying to sentence her to the same fate as Michael. She offered a fight but wasn’t being able to get out. A metallic sound was faintly heard in the air; a knife ricocheted between the walls in a matter of seconds and pierced the back of the man’s head, and his body fell limp. She immediately took a big breath and leaned on the wall. A deep, raspy masculine voice abruptly was audible, with a certain amusement.
—Don’t speak about this to anybody—but when Grace turned around, there was nobody else but her and the dead body. The blood was starting to pool.

Chapter 4: Whispers pass by.
The lawyer snaps his fingers in front of Grace impatiently —Hey, Agent Travers, pay attention to the judge, I didn't come to waste my time—
—Yes, I'm sorry I zoned out— she mumbled as she looked at Matt defending his idea that the FBI didn't need their material, "obstructive and not substantial" he said before sitting down again.
—The jury calls the counterpart's lawyer—
—Thank you, your honor, as Mr Murdock says, he believes that the FBI doesn't need all this material but they possess a full-scale legal team that can discern and analyze the evidence in a more detailed way, definitely. Mr Murdock's buffet attitude is irresponsible towards the FBI, the investigation and their buffet itself because of his arrogant attitude— the FBI lawyer said firm, Matt stood up from his seat.
—Objection your honor, prejudicial— he says quite loudly.
—Takes place, Mr Johnson, refrain of characterizing Mr Murdock—
—My apologies your honor, continuing, our team is much more capacitated and would be able to find new clues in this evidence, without leaving aside other possibilities. That would be all— he said and sat again next to Grace, buttoning his suit.
The jury then ordered them to wait outside while the result was discussed and some moments later the jury found in favor of the FBI, Matt approached her and the lawyer as they got out of the courtroom.
—Solid defense, congratulations agent Travers— Matt said with a smile even after all.
—Yeah, you lost today, sorry Murdock, it seems your charm doesn't work against an experienced lawyer—
Matt let's a little chuckle —This wasn't a battle for me, it was simply a predicament and now it's solved—
—Trying to see the good side or can't but play smart all the time?—
—I try to avoid fights, especially with the FBI and especially with a lady, Ms Travers . Any doubts you have you can call me and I will be cooperative— he said and extended his hand to her with a piece of paper.
—I already have your card, Murdock—
—I know, that's my personal number. Have a good day— he says nodding to them both and walking out calmly with his cane.
The lawyer sighs and hands her over the box of evidence.
—It's good that it was easy, I have more important cases to attend to Ms Travers, please do me the favor of delivering them yourself— he said and walked out with hurried steps. Grace took the box and walked to her car, setting the box on the passenger seat. Her phone started ringing so she got inside and closed the doors, it was an unknown number.
—Hi?—
—Travers, it's me. Are you out of the court already?— Poindexter said.
—When did you got my number?—
—This morning before I went to work, you were sleeping. How did it turned out?—
—Good, I got the evidence—
—Great, I need you to take out whatever I appear in.—
—No! I can't hide evidence and I need it!—
—It isn't a suggestion, take it off, I'll repay you the favor anytime—
—Do you know how severe it's taken destroying evidence?—
—Just leave it in your apartment—
—For what? they already have evidence against you—
—…I don't want to give them more to see…—
She stayed silent for a second then sighed, —It better be a really good payback for this—
—Thank you, Grace—
—You're welcome, P—
He slightly chuckled mocking —P?—
—Your nickname is too long and people is passing by—
—You can just tell me Dex, I don't mind—
—We aren't friends so,no—
—Have at it, I'll see you later—
Grace rests a bit before starting her car, she drives to her apartment and opens up the evidence box once she's inside, she had to be quick, everyone must be waiting for her. She starts to skim every page, she reads a bit of each one that says something about Poindexter and leaves it aside. When she's looking through everything she grabs all the evidence of him and leaves it in the attic, then she gets back in the car with the box and heads out to the FBI quarters.
When her car is far Matt comes out of the shadows and takes out his phone.
—Matt?— Foggy says in the other line.
—Are you alone?— he says, catching his breath.
—Were you running? What are you doing? I'm alone now—
—I got out of the courtroom and I was going to leave but I heard agent Travers talk with Poindexter on the phone—
—WHAT?! Are you sure?—
—I 'm sure, It was his voice and I stayed listening—
—Oh God this isn't good— Foggy says already starting to panic, —Are they acquaintances?—
—It seems they don't know each other much. I doubt they did before he went to jail so it's strange. What's concerning is she took evidence of his shenanigans—
—So she works for him? She didn't look like that kind of person— Foggy says confused as he paces around his small office.
—I'll keep investigating, there has to be more to this but yeah, not good news.—
—Should we be concerned about Karen?—
—…I…never could figure out if he had a grudge against her or simply followed Fisk orders…But it would be pointless for him to try to kill her again, more trouble for him—
—Yeah, yeah.I'm concerned already but I would like to think it's that way, I'll tell her now—
—Okay, take care— Matt said and hung up the phone. He re-adjusted his glasses and stroked his forehead, he was going to have a long night.
Grace got to the FBI, Nicholas encountered her just as she entered.
—It was about time, what took so long?—
—There was traffic—
—Yeah, I'm sure there was, just hand it over to the legal team already— He said and walked out, nearly bumping her shoulder—
She simply scoffed and walked to the legal wing, taking elevators and some stairs. When she delivered them she stayed seeing them start to classify the documents and put them away in different boxes. It was taking some time when Jennifer entered the room.
—Grace, the Italians passed by the center of the city to the neighborhood of "The Cobras" get going!— she said, Grace immediately got out of the evidence room and followed her to the changing rooms. She strapped her radio quickly and turned it on.
—Status?— she said.
—Four black Toyota Tundra, no number plate, passed by the 9th avenue, masked men covered in black got out of the windows and started shooting as they were passing by. A few patrols tried to follow them in the moment but they crashed against civilians— A police officer said back weary.
—What about the civilians?— Jacques asked as he finished putting on his vest.
—A lot hurt, as well as cops. 5 deaths—
—We are on the way, we'll track them— Jennifer replied.
Grace nodded slightly and the team got out on their trucks, when they got to the scene it was a painful one. Some people were lying down on the sidewalk hurt waiting for more ambulances, 3 cars were destroyed against shops and a motorcycle in the middle of the street they had to surround as they drove slowly. A police officer got to them.
—They kept going straight ahead for some kilometers, some witnesses said—
—Why aren't the ambulances coming?— Grace asked.
—There's some people that refused, insurance, y'all know how it is—
—Can't we help them someway?— Jacques said with a bitter taste in his mouth.
—We are on it, you go and try to trace the trucks—
—Just drive some of these people on the patrols, Steve, they need to go to a hospital— Grace said.
—Yeah and if anyone has valuable info tell us— Jacques said, the officer tipped his hat and got back to talking with a woman holding an ice pack to her head, they passed by and continued driving. Other police officers started talking on the radio indicating where to go.
The trucks had kept going shooting the surroundings and causing traffic accidents everywhere they had passed by.
—They got down of the trucks, I repeat they go down of the trucks they are in the start of East Harlem and are shooting us!—
—Copy— Jacques said and sped up, the other FBI trucks followed him and they got to the scene quickly, as the police said some men were out of the trucks but two others were still on them and charged them.
—LEFT LEFT LEFT!— She screamed at Jacques but he couldn't turn as they were the truck closest to getting there. The Italians truck lunged on their left side, making it do a turn and get upside down. The others stopped in their trucks and got out to shoot the Italians back.
Grace knew she was okay, and that everyone was okay, the helmets and equipment got them safe and the truck could take such a hit. The others next to her undid their seatbelts, Jennifer helped with hers and everyone got out to join the shot fire.
The men closer to the start of the neighborhood entered in it while Grace and the others took down some men.
Grace's team divided themselves to follow the men running through the alleys and roofs of the neighborhood, people had already seen the situation and closed their homes and others had stayed inside shops.
Running, she was able to follow one man going alone, maybe the leader or a right hand, she thought.
Grace got close to the man and started a physical fight with him, trying to throw him to the floor but he was armed with a knife she kept avoiding getting stabbed with. She got to shoot his shoulder but the man managed to throw her gun and then almost kick her off the roof. She held on to the edge of it and took a great effort to get back on again, the man kept running away meanwhile.
She let out a big breath when she was on the roof again and then came down to reunite with the team.
All the men had attacked back and got away like a pack of sneaky rats, it wasn't good, and she wasn't feeling good either. She was taking off the balaclava of her face when she saw a news van already standing in the front with a reporter setting up the cameraman. She approached walking quickly and shoved the camera man to the side quite roughly.
—This is a fresh scene get out of here—
—We have the right to- —
—No, you don't, get out of here before you mess it up— Grace said, pushing the reporter away with her body.
—Wow, wow, don't hurt her!— A man from her team says getting closer to them.
—Im not, get out of here and wait behind the perimeter!— she shouts them.
—People have the right to know what's going on!— he shouts back. Some other agents get with her and make them get away from the scene.
Grace takes off all her helmet finally, feeling it claustrophobic, and takes a little breath with her hands on her hips as she sees ambulances and some police cars get to put order in the scene. Jacques comes up to her.
—Gracie, we'll catch them, you know?— he said softly.
She scoffs and kicks a little rock, —But the sooner the better and just look at everything that happened today—
—Occupational hazards, Gracie, this shit can happen and it will happen. We can only do our best, and we know we do. Don't pay attention to her— he says signaling with his head to the news reporter.
—Isn't she the same person that gave the scoop of Fisk?— Grace says, analyzing her more.
—Now that you say so, yeah. She's been the first one on some good news…I mean good for her— he says crossing his arms.
—Yeah…Reporters are like vultures looking for carrion— she scoffs.
Jacques scoffs back, —Don't tell me…I'll go help Jenn with some stuff but get going if you want— he says and walks back inside the neighborhood. Grace stays standing in her place watching the reporter and her team continue to argue but now behind the barrier the police had put. After a moment she moves and decides to help Jacques and Jennifer to assess the damage and help the police too.
It takes hours and after they are finally done she tells them she wants to go and rest alone.
Amanda was in her apartment turning on a coffee machine when her door was knocked. She looked through the viewfinder but saw a strange woman.
—Who is it?— she said, not really expecting anyone.
—FBI, Ms, just need to ask some questions.—
She doubted but opened the door, Grace immediately got in and closed the door behind her.
—You, from the crime scene, what do you want? You ruined my reportage!—
—I simply wanted a chat, Amanda, right? You're a newbie in all this. Maybe you need a few tips.—
—All my job is legal, I know my rights.—
—Maybe you don't know your violations. Do you think you can point a camera to an FBI agent?—
—Criminals hide themselves in masks, nothing to be worried about if you're transparent.—
—You may not understand this, but there are people that don't want to be a public figure like you. There is people that needs that safety to protect their families!—
—They absolutely are under the government, you have all their protection!—
—Showing mine and my coworkers face's could blow up an undercover mission or simply give info to criminals to find us. Do you know how easy it was to find you?—
—I can watch my back—
—This is a warning, stay in your lane or I won't be so friendly—
—You should be careful with what you do too, legally speaking—
—I'll keep it in mind, have a good afternoon— Grace said and got out by herself. She got back in her car and drove straight home.
When she got there Poindexter wasn't in the living room, so she climbed up to the attic and saw him in there folding his clothes and putting them away on the little bed.
—You were too quiet, what were you doing?—
—Just making space— he said, the boxes were piled up and some were even on shelves she forgot she even had.
—You don't have permission to touch my things—
—I moved them only…and you have other things to worry about, like that nasty bruise on your arm.—
Grace looks down to see a big purple bruise that was forming on her right arm, —Ah shit…just needs ice—
—I heard about that bloody scene today, you went there?—
—Yeah, I did. They needed anyone possible there…It's a busy street and they knew it, they wanted to cause a scene—
—Really showy. It won't end up too well for them—
—They…they got away, we went after them and they managed to escape, all of them—
—Im sure they got something worse than a bruise, and as I said, too showy—
—What do you mean?—
—They will get carried away, wanting to show off, if this is how they start—
—You speak from experience?—
He stays quiet for some seconds then turns to her, —I wasn't doing it to show off—
—If I'm going to keep having to trust you, start showing yourself—
He turns to face her and crosses his arms.
—I wasn't doing it to show off to anyone, I did it for myself. Before that, everything I did was for others. I exploded, happy?—
—…Do you regret it?—
—If I said I did, I would be lying. I don't own anything to anyone now—
—What a way to see it, nothing stable, living running and alone but no regrets—
—I will work it out, don't concern yourself, agent—
—I wasn't, just pointing out how it sounds—
A moment of an uncomfortable silence where Grace seemed to have her mind elsewhere carried on for some seconds while looking at each other before Poindexter broke it.
—Moving on, Vanessa said yesterday she wants to buy the port, and they are sending her a little personal soldier to protect her. I want to see what this is all about—
—Fine, but I'm not doing another full on action entrance, I had enough for a day— she said in a murmur and came down the stairs back to the living room.
—Relax, I was thinking to try some luck and listen— he said, coming down too behind her. —But you look like you need a minute— he said, propping his left side on the wall.
—I don't need a minute, I'll change and we'll go—
—I don't do anything half-way, agent, and you aren't at your 100%—
—We can't choose when to relax—
—I can, we will go tomorrow. Take care of your business, we don't want you getting sloppy— he turned around and went back to the attic. Grace looked in his way and then went for an ice pack, kind of demoralized.

Chapter 3: The door to the labyrinth.
Grace locked her bedroom door and sat on the bed. She grabbed her phone and looked at Jennifer and Jacques' contacts, as she doubted. But no, she couldn't do that to them, she couldn't put them in danger, Poindexter could threaten them too. He was unpredictable.
So she left her phone aside and got to sleep, as well as she could knowing that now she wasn't alone. But he had a point, if he really wanted to kill her, he would have done so by now. It still didn't mean the situation was any better but as they say, whatever lets you sleep at night, right?
When she woke up the next day and checked around he was already gone to work as he said. He had made himself a little makeshift bed with a piece of cardboard and three blankets on the wooden floor, he also had left a small backpack next to it and the suit neatly folded.
She crouched and opened it, there were casual clothes and a gun holster inside it, so she left it and grabbed the suit instead, somewhat less bloody but still she decided to put it in the washing machine as she prepared for work herself and took it off before leaving.
The ride to the quarters was quick today at least, she stepped in the room and sat on her usual spot next to Jennifer and Jacques.
—Morning, we were talking around and we could try to seize the documents from Murdock— Jacques says.
—Yeah, the unprotected evidence.— Jennifer adds, —You know it's quite a long process, I asked for the approval for the judicial order already.—
—I can't stand the whole legal process, I don't understand how we aren't able to just do it, specially in this case.— Grace said, moving a bit on her office chair, —I´ll have a talk with the lawyer—
—It's not gonna change anything, Grace, this is the way to get these documents— Jacques said.
—Yeah, but I will need him to cooperate, something he wasn't happy to do yesterday— Grace says as she gets out again.
—What bug bite her?— Jennifer said as she saw how quickly Grace went out, Jacques just shrugged.
Grace took the same path she had taken before to Murdock's buffet and arrived hastily, this time he himself received her, as he was opening the door to a client leaving.
—Agent, what can I do for you today?— He said, calmly.
—You know what counselor, we will have an order to possess your evidence— She said irritated.
—I suppose you already know only the non protected kind, the cases were the FBI has a say over the notes is very rare—
—Loose the attitude, I may not get everything I wish for but you will have to play nice—
—I play nicely within the law's bounds, and I will defend my right to believe the FBI doesn't need our evidence. My investigation was small and you will need new evidence. It's a waste of time—
—I don't want your advice Mr Murdock, the FBI has its legal team. I only came to notify you personally— Matt couldn't know what was happening in her life but he could perceive something had Grace very on edge, she was sweating more than normally, her breathing was accelerated and her heart was beating faster.
—Of course, sorry if I offended you, agent. If you want the files, fine, I don't want problems and you can still always consult me about anything, over a cup of coffee if you might.— Matt expressed softer.
—As long as you facilitate the process it'll be fine, I would prefer things to stay professional— she said calmer but still serious.
—Oh no, of course, I would never suggest the contrary…are you well agent?— Grace stood silent forming a frown on her forehead, not comprehending how the man could notice her anxious state, —It's just you sound agitated.—
—I am well, I simply cannot take too much time talking to you. Thanks for the concern, we will see at court. Have a good day, Murdock— Grace said and walked out rushed, leaving a trail of chaotic hormones smell that only Matt could perceive. Foggy got out of the room and walked to him.
—I heard the chat, you better not try to mess around with her—
Matt slightly chuckles, —I promise I'm not…something was wrong today, do you remember how she came yesterday?—
Foggy put his hands on his pockets and nodded, —Yeah, bossy, like she owned the place— he said with a scoff.
—That confidence wasn't there now, she was frightened but not of me, not of this case…—Matt said pensively, fidgeting with his cane.
—You will investigate?—
—Perhaps…—
—Be careful, we don't want more problems with the FBI, Matty— Foggy said patting his shoulder amicably and got back to his office.
Grace went back to the FBI quarters and tried to focus on the daily work they had, recently they had taken under witness protection a family, the father was a cop that had been accepting bribes to turn a blind eye to the activities of what looked like an emerging Italian mafia lead by two brothers. It was small but growing fast, they had already been buying plenty of cops, a lawyer and getting ammunition easily. Their only problem was that they were disputing territory with a local organized group that had more control over the city.
The man had agreed to give them information if they got their family safe, so every once in a while he would give them updates with a burner phone.
—Ethan, we hear you, you're on speaker—Jacques said as along with Jennifer, Grace and other agents sat around the table in an interrogation room.
—Things are tense, "The Cobras" robbed the Italians guns and drug shipment. The Italians called us and the lawyer to tell us all, ordered us to start searching for it around the city.
—Have they mentioned if someone is providing them, like Fisk?— Jacques continued.
—No, just local gun dealers it seems, they make the methamphetamine themselves. I still don't know where their factory is. With this…provocation of "The Cobras" they were mad, said they will give them a show. I don't think that means anything good.— the man said, nervous on the other end.
—No, probably not, don't question anything, just follow what they say and communicate when it's safe. Anything else?—
—One of the brothers broke the legs of the security guard that had to watch over the shipment, I'm scared to be the next one.—
—Don't be, we have your back, if you get to know what that show will be contact us—
—Okay, I'll do— the man said and cut the call.
—How is the family?— Grace said.
—All safe, we have some agents near them—someone else said.
—And the location?— Jennifer asked a woman who was sitting with a computer.
—It shows him in his house, all normal— she answered.
—What was the "legal" business of these men again?— Grace said.
—A gas station, a big one at that but it's more on the outskirts— another agent said, —That would be all for today regarding Ethan's case, I'll take care of the transcription of the call—
—Wait, does someone know what the DA or the chief of Rikers Island said?— Jacques said.
—Miranda's team went, they came back and said the DA basically told them a lot of legal bullshit, you know how it is, technically the process and the new evidence was legal and his lawyer found a legal loophole that made possible the appeal— That same agent said.
—Yeah and the chief of Rikers said it made a difference that Fisk had "an exemplary behavior" during his jail time that also contributed to it— the woman with the computer said.
Grace shake her head slightly, —Of course they would say that…—
—For now there's not much more to do than to keep revising over the evidence we already have and expect him to show his face and screw it all again— the other male agent said.
—That's it? really?, Nicholas?— Jennifer said disappointed.
—It's not ideal but we have a much more real threat now to deal with, the Italians. Besides I'm not the one that can decide those matters— Nicholas said.
—We all should push to do more— Grace told him indignant.
—We can't get over it, we are going to end up getting dirty, we are trying to keep the little reputation we have left— he said bitterly.
—We should care more about how we look at our job than doing our job, Nicholas?—
—I think we all should go back to our duties— The woman with the computer said firmly without looking at them. The others got up their seats and cleared the room quickly under the tense climate, Nicholas went off too calmly.
—Can't stand him— Grace muttered to Jacques and Jennifer as they themselves got out.
—Yeah, news flash, we all already know you can't stand each other— Jacques scoffed.
—You have to stop competing with him— Jennifer told her exasperated.
—I'm not, he always gets in my way, always has something to say like he is my boss,— Grace chuckled dissatisfied— He might even get there.
—There's always this jackasses that acts like they are too good to be around "regular" people like us, he turns down the birthday celebrations, the happy hour and buying lunch for the team. He's just another stuck up— Jacques rambled.
—Yes Grace, I promise you he doesn't even thinks about you, he has never been nice with anyone—
—I don't even need him to be nice, just for him to let me do my job.— Grace let out a sigh, moving on from thinking about Nicholas and continuing about her day. Today she had re-scheduled her Muay Thai class, she practiced as much as she could with her workload and had started learning since she was a teen.
Her aunt hadn't known how much of a good idea it was but his uncle had encouraged and convinced her, "let the kid feel strong", he had said final and after it Vivian didn't question it. Especially with how good she performed at championships and her professor had her back like she was almost family.
Quickly coach Sloan had joined Seth's cookouts after the championships, sitting in the backyard with Vivian while Grace put the table. Without meaning that she wouldn't keep pushing Grace to give her maximum.
Grace quickly changed her clothes in the academy bathroom and then bowed to her opponent before the training started, a girl younger than her.
The girl started by throwing straight punches to Grace's face but she defended herself , blocking most of them and giving the girl high kicks to her abdomen. Grace grabbed her with her forearms and closed on her cornering her while taking the punches, the girl tried to strike her with a low kick but Grace was quick to step into the strike slightly to absorb impact, catch the leg, secure it with her arm, and use her opposite hand to push their posture and sweep their standing leg.
The match continued to favor Grace as the girl couldn't answer as well to Grace counter-attacks and after 5 rounds Sloan declared the match finished.
—There wasn't any need for you to hit her so harshly, Grace— Sloan said composed.
—She should learn to not be so stiff and not drop her guard so fast if she wants to have a chance— Grace said calculatingly.
—I can notice it already, but you're much more skilled— Sloan said with patience.
—Then why do you give me a rookie? Teach her yourself. For me I would tell her to try tennis for the best— Grace said cunning, winning herself a disapproving look from Sloan.
—I accept all kinds of students, and she has time to grow. This isn't a competition, it's an instance of mutual learning. Measure your strength Grace—
—Just don't pair her with me, it's for the best— Grace said, grabbing her bag from the floor— Bye Sloan.
Sloan gave a little nod and her eyes followed Grace as she left. Her mind couldn't avoid going back in time to a moment when Grace was just 18. She was in the finals against a very cheeky girl who insulted her under her teeth during every break. It had tensioned Grace and distracted her a bit but she had kept a straight face and pure discipline on the match. She won in the end but still clenched her jaw tightly and asked for a moment to go to the bathroom.
The family and other classmates stayed busy chatting between themselves so after a moment Sloan went for Grace, the bathrooms were far. A thud on the floor and a painful scream got to her before she was even reaching the bathrooms. She rushed and then looked down the stairs of the exit, next to the bathroom, Grace's opponent lay by the floor in pain.
—She bumped on the door when I opened it, Miss— Grace said to her. And Sloan knew Grace was numb to accidents but the look she had on was a completely different thing.
—Go, call the doctor's— She told her and then went downstairs to be with the girl on the floor who whined in pain. Later on she was told the girl couldn't compete anymore because of her injuries.
At the time, she chose to believe it. It could have been an accident, even if deep down she felt it wasn't. Nothing like it happened again and Grace carried on as normal.
She went straight to her apartment after it, she opened the door and quickly shut it down behind her. Poindexter was sitting on her couch watching something on her TV.
—I never told you you could be on this side of my home— she said leaving the keys on the counter top.
—What was I supposed to do until you came back?— he said simply, he was wearing casual clothes and looked almost like just any other regular person on the street.
—Nothing, this isn't a playground. It's already enough you are here— she said, crossing her arms and scanning around him.
—I haven't searched for my knives, if that's what you're thinking. I will wait you give them back—
—That will happen when you have an actual plan, Poindexter—
—I have somethin' to start with— he said and turned on the TV and got up from the couch to stand in front of her, with the kitchen counter separating them, —I want to start by paying a little visit to Vanessa—
—Vanessa Fisk, where?—
—In her art gallery, but I can't show up. She knows me well already, you need to go and talk with her— he said propping his hands on the kitchen counter.
—What do you want me to say and what do you want to get out of it?— she said skeptically.
—First, how far is Fisk, where she lives now and also what is Vanessa doing? Because I doubt a woman like her will just sit and wait—
—What kind of woman is she?—
—Cold, manipulative…Fisk at least got his hands dirty a few times, she just orders others to do it for her—
—She ordered you to kill the people of the Bulletin?—
—No, that was Fisk—
—Then what did she ordered you?—
—…I'll save that for myself, — he said giving a fake sympathetic smile —just pretend you admire Fisk or something to get her to talk, we'll go walking and I want my knives back—
Grace sighed and went to her room, a few seconds after she shoved the towel with the knives to his chest and he quietly went to the attic to change into his suit. Grace changed into some black clothes and after it she started following Poindexter to the art gallery. Once they got close to the art gallery, Poindexter climbed to a building roof in front of it to see how it went. Grace went ahead and got inside.
—Hello, is there something I can help you with?— Vanessa said, approaching her with a charming yet professional smile on her face.
Grace smiled back, —I was looking at all the pieces, they are beautiful—
—Anything that catches your attention in particular? for what space would it be?— Vanessa said.
—A friend actually told me to look for her living room, I think she would like this red one…sorry, your face looks familiar to me, have I seen you before?— Grace said casually, keeping the friendly tone.
Vanessa slightly chuckled —It's possible, I've been at plenty exhibition openings—
—Oh no, no, from somewhere else. Aren't you Wilson Fisk's wife?—
—Yes I am, are you an advocate for him?—
—That man is… inspiring, he really loves New York. If you don't mind me asking, what will he do now that he is free?—
—I don't know, I mean we don't know. He has decided to get some time for himself until he knows what he wishes to do now—
—I'm really sorry, I hope I didn't get too personal. I hope he comes back soon, would do good around here—
—You don't need to worry, we are public figures after all, and he would be flattered with the compliments. Do you need more time to decide?—
—Yes, It can be—
—Why would your friend like this painting? if this doesn't convince you completely maybe I can recommend you another one.—
—It's a beautiful mix of red and orange—
—That's all? what emotions does it provoke in you?—
—It feels familiar, comfortable almost. The…traces of the brush seem violent but…It created something beautiful, to be appreciated…But I think my friend should come herself—
—Yeah, maybe she should. If I were her I would take your recommendation— Vanessa said, analyzing her subtly. —We are about to close now, tell her to come earlier—
—Of course, thank you for your time— Grace said and got out, walked trough and alley and got on top of the roof with Poindexter.
—She seemed nostalgic while you two talked, so he really is far— He said.
They saw Vanessa close the gallery and then 4 men, who looked like security, waited for a car. While they were waiting for it, Poindexter signaled Grace to get off the roof and then he robbed a motorcycle. When Vanessa's car arrived, him and Grace got on the motorcycle and Poindexter followed the car.
They left the crowded part of Hell's Kitchen and got to an imposing yet delicate white house in the middle of a private land, two men in front of her and two men behind her. Once they got in Poindexter left the motorcycle hidden near the entrance and got up the roof with Grace.
—Can you keep up with me?— he said, looking into a part of the roof and removing it with one of his knives.
—What are you doing?— she said as she put on a balaclava and zipped her jacket.
—Entering— he said final.
—Are you crazy? she will notice and know it's you—
—I know, I want her to. Let's see how much more Fisk can stay away from her— He gave Grace his gun with a silencer, then pulled apart the piece of roof and grabbed himself from an ostentatious chandelier, getting down to the floor without making noise, Grace followed him, making a bit of noise when she landed. Vanessa wasn't on the main room but had security all over the house, a guard was about to approach them when Poindexter threw a knife across the room that went through the man's throat.
Grace grabbed the body before it fell on the floor and left it against the wall and followed Poindexter as he went ahead searching for Vanessa. He took some other men, pulling the knives from the bodies after they got closer to a master bedroom where Vanessa's voice could be heard.
—How are the documents for the port acquisition going?— She said while taking her earrings off.
—Perfectly well Ms Fisk, the lawyer revised them before sending them, there's more paperwork ahead but nothing should stop the process—
— Good, any message from Wilson?—
—No Ms, I'm sorry. But we know he is safe and that he has sent a new man to take special measures of your security— the man said with a reassuring tone.
—Do I know this man?—
—No miss, but Mr Fisk previously knew him, it was a recommendation from Mr Wesley. Anything else I can do for you?—
—Yes, make sure to update me about the situation of the five families. You're dismissed—
Dex hid him and Grace behind another wall and waited for the man to step away, another guard coming downstairs with a radio spoke out loud.
—Ms Fisk, we are under attack!— the man getting to the floor said and Dex quickly threw a knife to him, Vanessa had her doors closed by another man inside and multiple other guards started coming downstairs.
—Cover my back, we're getting out of here— Dex told Grace as they took cover behind a big table in the middle of the room, Grace took the safety off the gun and turned her back to him.
Dex waited and when the guards had to stop to reload their guns, he rolled on the floor and made them drop them with a throw of his knives. The guards they had in front took cover and unexpectedly others came out from the hallway, Grace shot them but needed to move as the wooden table was already starting to break. Dex had already moved to the staircases, taking the last guards there and going up without looking back at Grace.
Grace had to grab the table and use it as a poor shield to follow him while shooting at least the men she had closer, getting grazed by some bullets. Once they got to the second floor her bullets were out so she went full body to body as she put a foot on the floor. Dex finished cleaning the area and turned to kill the last men Grace was fighting, he looked to Vanessa's door.
—We will see again, Vanessa— he shouted loud enough for her and then signaled Grace to follow him to an exit door. They almost jumped the long staircase and ran to the motorcycle as more security was getting out to the house but they were quick enough to run off on it before they got too close.
Dex left the motorcycle in an alley and he and Grace walked to her apartment, it was late and no one was around to see them. As soon as they entered and she closed the door, Grace gave Dex a direct jab to his face.
—That was a fucking mess and you left me to my luck!— she said almost biting the words, not screaming to not wake up anyone. Dex grabbed the right side of his face and slightly chuckled.
—First times are rarely perfect, agent, but I will take the criticism— he said sarcastically, Grace scoffed and grabbed her left shoulder, which was bleeding a little bit. She walked to the bathroom and took out her first aid kit without looking at him.
—Everything's funny for you? hm? I'll tell you what, if you pretend that I will follow you blindly you're very wrong. I won't go through such a shit show again, I will kick your ass off, I don't care how much you threaten me— she pulled down the sleeve, uncovering her bloody shoulder and starting to put alcohol on it with a piece of cotton.
—No…I'm just not…used to go in pairs, I got caught up in myself…On the bright side, we know a little of what she's up to— he said like a bit regretful.
—Yeah, let's see if next time we can be more discreet— she said, still furious.
—You're right, I'm sorry. But I want Vanessa to know I'm close, to feel that fear—
—That's done, let's see now how fast Fisk comes to her aid or who the hell he sends. But more importantly, why would Vanessa want to buy the port? I thought it was municipal or something— she checked the cotton and kept applying pressure.
—I wish I knew but I don't— he said and started to check himself for injuries but he hadn’t.
—We have time to figure it out, now I just want to sleep— Grace muttered.
Dex nodded, —I will go up now then…hope that heals fast— he said, opened the attic and got in it. Grace sighed and went to her bedroom.
