Jean — who admitted that Kevin was not his friend, that he wanted him dead, that he'd slash his tires before he'd broke them out of hell — still trusted Kevin to have his back at the interview, still wanted to listen to what he had to say, still looked at him and cared about his well being. The fact that Kevin drinking his life away wasn't troublesome because of the mental implications, but because he's throwing his body away and won't be able to play exy well — is in strong antithesis with Jean being “happy” when he broke his hand.

Jean is an abandoned child.

He has never had someone to call his own, besides his sister that he hasn't seen in years (and then found that he'd let her down).

Kevin being his first friend and first trusted companion and Kevin making him swear not to die — Jean still hating Kevin for it does numbers on how badly depressed Jean still is. He doesn't care that he's still alive and doing better and having friends — real friends — because Kevin has ended up abandoning him as well. I wonder if he's been so used to the thought that he expected his friends to do that as well.

Pls I cackled so much at this part — just imagine Jean n Neil high five-ing in their spare time after a messy interview or stand off with their teammates.

The loudmouth and the forced to be silent sharing the same violent tendency to be rude just to make their point across
