Track Mention Time!
#4. Pink Floyd - The Division Bell - Keep Talking
Holy cow. This is my personal favourite track out of all Pink Floyd songs. Probably because I grew up listening to this on my father’s car almost all the time. The instruments, the lovely background voices. Everything. I love how it all comes together to form this unique piece. The lyrics basically talks about how important communication is when it comes to things like relationships or in general. I love how it features Stephen Hawking’s voice in it as well. If you listen to his voice, you’ll be able to understand how our imagination has allowed us to speak. (KEYWORD: SPEAK) And how important it is for it to remain that way. In my opinion, speaking is a very powerful way ti express ourselves no matter what. It’s our voice, not someone else’s. Uniquely ours. That’s what makes us unique. It also helps us solve many of our problems in our everyday lives. That’s what makes us different from many other animals. Aside from what Stephen Hawking said, the lyrics express a sense of pleading and frustration. Mainly highlighting the pain of feeling unheard or misunderstood. As heard on these specific lyrics: “I feel like i’m drowning” “I’m feeling weak now” and “But I can’t show my weakness”. On these specific lyrics, you can also hear the background voices saying “What are you feeling?”, “Why won’t you talk to me?” and “You never talk to me”. They suggest that the person (aka the singer) has problems with communicating with others to express their feelings and emotions. And the background voices know that the person needs help because the person never talks to them yet they are feeling misunderstood. It’s as if the person has a big fear of being so called “judged” and unheard by others and I think that’s what makes them not want to talk to other people about what they’re going through.
This might be the longest I have written so far and I’m glad that I did. Despite difficulties, communication is really essential for resolving many problems and moving forward. The human language and communication is really fundamental for our evolution. Our ability to connect with each other by speaking is what sets us apart from animals. While the song suggests communication is key, it also acknowledges that it's not always easy and it reflects the challenges in achieving open and honest dialogue. That’s why this specific track from the album really stood out to me. It really made me wonder a BUNCH of things and think about how cool it is to bring people together simply by talking. I do struggle to open up with others but when I do, it makes me feel better than how I was feeling before. I love expressing myself, I really do. But sometimes the doubt gets to me in the wrong times. And that’s something I want to improve on. I want to feel more confident about expressing myself to people. But sometimes some people just don’t understand that, and that’s what makes me feel sort of frustrated in myself and them. I don’t know.
Whatever, whenever you are available, take the time to listen to this track. It’s cool :) And if you’re struggling with opening up with others, just know that it will be okay. If people don’t like about what you have to say or express about yourself, then that’s their problem, not yours. Be YOU.
Have a great day :3
