something is wrong.

something is deeply wrong.

something is screeching in his ears like nails on a chalkboard.

he does not see what he should see. he does not see the orphanage, though he was there a mere moment ago.

he sees the tangle, he sees creatures not of the human realm, he sees darkness, he sees roots and teeth and hunger embodied.

he sees that he is being eaten.

but it is not him who is being eaten.

he is eating and being eaten.

he is terrifying and terrified.

something that should not be in the tangle approaches him and opens its mouth and when it speaks it melts his ears and burns his brain. it shoves him.

and bede, overcome with the tangle's hunger, has no patience for any more noise. he too is hungry. he lashes out with sharpened claws, the unknown something makes another awful noise, and lunges for him.

he's hungry. he's hungry. he's hungry.

with each strike he delivers upon his prey, however, he feels less hungry, even without biting into them.

the prey has escaped. but there is more.
