waking up two hours early for my job as a gacha character to put on my three discrete hair ornaments, four layers of clothes, eight-square-inch armor plates affixed to my clothes at random, various ribbons and straps that do nothing but encircle my thighs/upper arms, choker, and multi-layered gloves. however I forget to affix dangling tassles everywhere and am sacked immediately for my carelessness
The descent into the devastating and inescapable logic of “Why We Build the Wall” throughout the song will never not haunt me.
Why do we build the wall? We build the wall to keep us free. How does the wall keep us free? The wall keeps out the enemy. What do we call the enemy? The enemy is poverty. What do we have that they should want? We have a wall to work upon.
Like the show itself, the logic of the wall is cyclical, so it’s inescapable. The wall is literal. The wall is figurative. We create the wall ourselves when we value profit over life. And at the end of the day, after all that work, and all of that time spent disparaging the “have nots,” the only thing you have left is the very wall you are building, separating you from your fellow man.
the euphemism in Why We Build The Wall that always kills me is “the enemy is poverty”. because on the surface yes, people do want to keep the concept of poverty away from them. but thats not what Hades means. he means the enemy is poor PEOPLE. not necessarily the biggest difference, but when he says “because they want what we have got”, he is talking about PEOPLE, whereas saying he is keeping poverty out both makes his statements less precise, making it easier to weasel around, and dehumanizing the people he is working against. more genius writing by anais mitchell

hc that theres a timeline where lg could have saved cxs, but was so jaded by previous timelines that it never occurred to him. that in his mind, he’s equated injury to death, and at some point he gives up just a little too early. at first, i thought maybe cxs gets wounded and ql calls an ambulance, but lg dives before he hears the news that cxs made it through. he just disappears, leaving cxs to wonder how he could have abandoned him. and then i realized that then he would never get cxs’ power that way, so maybe it shows up differently. maybe cxs gets hurt and only lg is around. he has cxs in his arms, if he called an ambulance maybe they could save him, but lg has gotten so caught up in the time travel, in saving cxs meaning subtle changes to the timeline, and cxs being lost the second he gets seriously hurt, that it doesn’t even occur to him to try and save him the normal way. he truly thinks all he can do is hold him as he dies. hc that lg DID find a timeline where cxs could have survived and he didn’t even know it
“he could make you see how the world could be, in spite of the way that it is” (all i’ve ever known intro)
but in doubt comes in, it’s EURYDICE who sings about hope, about how the life they want is Right There, meanwhile Orpheus’ parts leave you frantically searching the stage, trying to catch a glimpse of her, wondering HOW they made her so invisible, wondering if she’s even onstage at all.
“i used to see the way the world could be, but now the way it is is all I see” (doubt comes in)
but it’s NOT the way it is, since she IS behind him. Orpheus’ flaw that gets Eurydice killed both times is his inability to distinguish his fantasy from reality. his song could fix the world, stop this weather, bring them food, so they don’t need to gather anything in the meantime, he just needs to work on this. Eurydice is gone, Hades could have tricked him, and once he takes that final step into the living world, he could lose her and never be able to return. but in both cases, either his hope or despair leads him to fixate on something untrue and eventually ends up killing Eurydice
yes, i know everyone knows that hadestown is a play that is basically all foreshadowing from the minute Hermes steps onstage. and also
“why would I become his wife?”
“maybe because he’ll make you feel alive”
and he does it TWICE. first in act one before the storm (think “All I’ve Ever Known”) AND once in the underworld when he sings the song and makes her believe they can get out, following “Flowers” and “Way Down Hadestown (Reprise)”, during which she is described as being dead to the world, which is equated to having lost all hope.
unsure if this is really obvious but i just can’t get it out of my brain. one of the lines that always gets me in hadestown is in Epic II (or it might be chant i can’t remember) when Orpheus is working on the song and Hermes says what the entire audience is thinking; “look up!” with such force and desperation that it always catches me. yes, the reason Eurydice fell back into hadestown is because Orpheus looked back, but what if when he turned around that was why. what if he couldn’t trust his song to carry them out of hell anymore because last time he tried that, Eurydice died. The Fates are the personification of doubt but what if, in that moment, Orpheus’ doubt sounded like his mentor, begging him to look up, to open his eyes, and to not lose the woman he loves.

what they don't tell you about hadestown is that orpheus and eurydice are not the main characters. neither are persephone and hades. or hermes. or the fates. the main character is whoever in the band is playing the trombone because holy fuck
did you know 99% of Lu Guangs quit right before theyre about to find the timeline where Cheng Xiaoshi lives
WAR IS OVER
(also insane how this scene is so much like coming out. he's not what she thought he was, not the sort of boy she thought she'd raised, and she doesn't quite know how to accept it, but in the end he's still her son. she still cares about him and he still cares about her)
Something very spiritually Woodstock about Hinata to me send tweet
holy shit. almost burst into tears at work let’s all live

i'm rewatching the first episode of bridon arc and this whole scene makes me want to scream.
imagine you're cheng xiaoshi. you have abandonment issues due to your parents mysteriously leaving you as a small child. one day you meet a boy, and in his eyes you see the same secrets your parents kept from you. he's kind and good, but he's hiding something, and you're afraid it will take him away from you the same way it took your parents.
and you're cheng xiaoshi, so you can't be upfront and honest about these fears, and you have to mask your vulnerability with jokes. but he doesn't treat it like a joke. he says i won't disappear. he says i can use these powers for you. he says i can't promise forever, but i'll stay here as long as i can.
anyway, they make me ill.
Really, Cheng Xiaoshi? Right in front of your Lu Guang???
