1 more Obsession post I think a really interesting theme to the movie is also that its made incredibly clear that Bear got EXACTLY what he wished for but is not satisfied despite this. He wished for her to prioritize himself over anybody else, and we even see that for a good while this was WORKING FOR HIM. But once the consequences and inconvenience of his choice starts to be apparent he gets upset. Ive seen alot of posts about the fact that Nikki straight up is not the same personality at all post wish and it seems like he doesn't even notice. It was never about Nikki specifically really, he just wanted a loyal woman that loves him, but not too much that she's in his way. Like yes you could argue that things started to fall apart when he calls her out on her lie and she freaks out, but like. If you really did love this woman how did you not fucking know that she hates her dad to begin with. Actually editing to add like she phrases it as if she doesn't want to go inside because her dying father is in there. HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW SHE LIVES ALONE BRO

I think genuinely the scariest part about Obsession is the slow realization that the real Nikki is still there. Like, not only was she not erased, it seems clear to me that the entire time she is consious, like a passenger in her own body. There are a few moments you see her actively take control and try to distance herself while she can, but the longer time goes on the harder it is. What really solidified that for me was the brief sex scene where she looks completely dazed and uncomfortable, then immediately snaps back into people pleasing afterwards.

Another thing, while this may be obvious I think it's worth pointing out; his wish being that Nikki "loves him more than anyone else in the entire world" includes herself. Thats a major part of why shes willing to completely destroy herself, and only gets upset about it when she realizes she "might not be pretty anymore." Hell, theres no way to really know weither or not wish Nikki enjoyed the sex because her entire worldview is built around pleasing Baron. Not to be THAT guy but it does kinda remind me of TADC Caine in the sense of like. Existing purely to fufill one specific purpose, and not understanding that being so extreme about it is exactly what is causing you to fail. And again I think for the both of them a major flaw is that you really can't commit to loving other people if you can't love yourself. Pure unfiltered selflessness like that ends up becoming actively harmful. you not only hurt yourself but don't even realize that by hurting yourself youre also hurting the people that care about you.

Generally I think the movie becomes the scariest when you really focus in on Nikki's perspective. This all happened TO her, she literally didn't do anything but be a good friend and try to be open and communicative. I honestly can't tell weither or not its more tragic if she does or doesn't have true romantic feelings for Baron. Im leaning towards that she doesn't, but even if she did watching herself destory both herself and someone she really loves is horrible. Watching as Baron becomes more uncomfortable and afraid, watching her friends drift apart because of what she's doing, eventually actively hurting and killing them. And just to make it worse, Baron gets to escape. But she doesn't. Shes back in control, but now what? All her friends are dead, by her own hand. Her body is ruined, covered in gashes she inflicted on herself. She isn't going to be able to move on from this her life is literally over, she will either go to prison or a mental ward.

I spent a long time thinking about why wish Nikki would choose to feed Baron his cat, and the interpretation I came up with is I think that to her thats just what her idea of love is, literally all consuming.... well, obsession 😭. To consume someone is to make them apart of you. It was not a malicious action I think she genuinely believed he would appreciate it, would think it was thoughtful. Think about how wish Nikki might have acted if left for a long period of time with a dead Baron. She definitely wouldnt get rid of him. And again I think her reaction to being confronted about it is telling. She responds like hes talking about like, not putting ham on his sandwhich or something. Like it was just a small mix up. She doesn't understand the mental turmoil feeding someone their own pet causes. I find that like genuine misunderstanding of human connection to be really sad as well for wish Nikki. She really genuinely is trying but shes just not capable of understanding how to be appropriate. When she gets rejected she completely shatters, she can't understand why he isn't happy that she's doing exactly what he asked for, shes loving him more than anyone in the entire world!!! But I guess the problem is that she's,,,, Obsessed. She doesn't know how to love at all.

Honestly im so serious about this we like NEED media about what its like to be the weird guy.
