This flower symbolizes victory, endurance, and modest courage. Gentian does not catch the eye like a rose or a peony. You need to notice it, stoop down, and take a closer look - just like you need to see the true essence and honor of Thorin, hidden behind his external harshness and distrust.

The gentian can also symbolize the difficulties that a person overcomes for personal growth or the bitterness of maturing. This can also be traced in Thorin’s story. At a young age, he took the place of his father and grandfather, and led his people to life ...a life that, though not comparable to the one in Erebor, still allowed him to survive all the horror.
