When people search for volunteer opportunities in Thailand, they often imagine teaching English for a few hours each day, exploring beautiful destinations on weekends, and meeting other international travellers.

These experiences can certainly be rewarding. However, they rarely provide a genuine understanding of everyday life in rural Thailand.

Volunt2Thai was founded with a different vision.

Rather than building a volunteer program around tourism, the project grew out of close cooperation with local communities. Since 2013, it has developed long-term partnerships with villages, 13 primary schools, teachers, families, and local authorities in Northeast Thailand.

Behind this approach are more than 30 years of living and working in Thailand, combined with decades of international professional and life experience. The result is a volunteer project in Thailand that is unlike almost any other.

A Community Instead of Just a Placement

Many volunteer organisations work with a single school or one local partner.

Volunt2Thai is different.

It is part of a network of villages, schools, and community initiatives where volunteers become members of the local community rather than temporary visitors.

Across an area of approximately 20 square kilometres, volunteers work alongside 13 primary schools, local families, village leaders, elderly residents, and community organisations.

Since 2013, more than 4,000 children have benefited from the project, while over 700 international volunteers have become part of the Volunt2Thai community.

As a volunteer, your experience extends far beyond the classroom.

One day you may be teaching English at a village school. The next you might organise sports activities, support creative workshops, help with environmental projects, or spend time with elderly villagers.

Every activity helps build genuine relationships instead of simply completing volunteer hours.

Experience Thailand Instead of Simply Visiting It

One of the biggest differences is where volunteers live.

Instead of staying in a tourist destination, volunteers live on the Volunt2Thai campus, directly beside several traditional Thai villages where everyday life revolves around the local community.

Es begann nicht mit einem Projekt. Es begann mit einer Begegnung.

Vor mehr als 25 Jahren kam Raimund Wagner nach Thailand. Eigentlich wollte der junge Österreicher damals nach Australien reisen. Doch das Leben führte ihn nach Bangkok — eine Stadt voller Gegensätze.

Einerseits moderne Hochhäuser, internationale Firmen und wirtschaftlicher Aufschwung.

Andererseits die Slums.

Dort begann eine Erfahrung, die sein Leben verändern sollte.

Raimund lernte schnell Thai und arbeitete bald als Dolmetscher für internationale Unternehmen. Doch anstatt nur in der Geschäftswelt zu bleiben, verbrachte er immer mehr Zeit in den Armenvierteln Bangkoks. Er wollte verstehen, wie Menschen dort lebten — und warum so viele Jugendliche in Gewalt, Drogen, Kriminalität und Prostitution abrutschten.

Er saß mit Familien in kleinen Wellblechhütten, hörte Geschichten von Armut, fehlender Bildung und verlorenen Chancen. Junge Männer arbeiteten für kriminelle Banden. Junge Frauen versuchten verzweifelt, ihre Kinder zu ernähren. Viele Kinder hatten praktisch keine Perspektive.

Immer wieder hörte er dieselbe Herkunft:

Isaan — der arme Nordosten Thailands.

Die Eltern waren nach Bangkok gegangen, um Arbeit zu finden. Die Kinder blieben bei den Großeltern zurück. Ganze Generationen fehlten in den Dörfern.

Diese Erfahrungen ließen ihn nie wieder los.

2013 — Die Geburtsstunde von Volunt2Thai

Viele Jahre später besuchte Raimund das Dorf seiner Frau im ländlichen Isaan.

Und plötzlich erkannte er dieselben Muster wieder.

Kinder ohne Eltern. Großeltern, die alleine Familien versorgten. Fehlende Zukunftsperspektiven. Kaum Zugang zu Bildung nach der Pflichtschule.

Damals stellte ihm der Bürgermeister eine einfache Frage:

„Kannst du etwas tun, um die Situation hier zu verbessern?“

Zunächst sah Raimund nur Leere.

Keinen Tourismus. Keine Industrie. Keine wirtschaftlichen Möglichkeiten.

Doch genau darin erkannte er schließlich die Chance.

Denn anders als in den Großstädten gab es hier noch etwas Besonderes: echte Gemeinschaft, traditionelle Kultur, Zusammenhalt und Menschen, die bereit waren, gemeinsam etwas aufzubauen.

Aus dieser Idee entstand Volunt2Thai.

Was 2013 als kleine private Initiative mit Familie und Freunden begann, entwickelte sich Schritt für Schritt zu einem internationalen Community- und Sozialentwicklungsprojekt im Herzen des ländlichen Thailands.

Raimund und seine thailändische Familie investierten ihre gesamten Ersparnisse. Persönliche Wertgegenstände wurden verkauft, um das Projekt zu finanzieren. Es gab keine Investoren und keine Sicherheit.

Nur eine Vision:

Kindern in ländlichen Regionen Thailands bessere Chancen zu ermöglichen.

Die ersten Volunteers kamen ins Dorf

Am Anfang kannte niemand Volunt2Thai.

Ein ganzes Jahr lang arbeitete das kleine Team daran, Volunteers über soziale Netzwerke und persönliche Kontakte zu finden. Als schließlich die ersten Freiwilligen ankamen, begann etwas Besonderes.

Die Volunteers wurden nicht einfach Touristen.

Sie wurden Teil der Dorfgemeinschaft.

Sie unterrichteten Englisch an Schulen. Organisierten kreative Projekte. Spielten Fußball mit Kindern. Lernten Thai. Aßen gemeinsam mit Familien. Erlebten das echte Thailand abseits des Tourismus.

Vor allem aber brachten sie den Kindern etwas, das oft unbezahlbar ist:

Aufmerksamkeit, Motivation und neue Perspektiven.

Volunt2Thai im Jahr 2026

Heute — mehr als zehn Jahre später — ist aus einer kleinen Idee ein internationales Netzwerk geworden.

Volunt2Thai zählt inzwischen zu den bekanntesten unabhängigen Volunteer-Projekten im ländlichen Thailand und hat sich weit über klassische Freiwilligenarbeit hinaus entwickelt.

Der heutige Volunt2Thai Campus & Cultural Centre ist ein lebendiger Treffpunkt für Menschen aus aller Welt geworden.

Das Projekt möchte langfristig dazu beitragen, dass junge Menschen in ihrer Heimat Perspektiven finden — ohne den Weg in Armut, Kriminalität oder Prostitution gehen zu müssen.

Bildung steht dabei im Mittelpunkt.

Denn Bildung bedeutet Möglichkeiten.

Und Möglichkeiten verändern Leben.

Vielleicht sitzt eines der Kinder, das heute Englisch mit Volunteers lernt, in zwanzig Jahren selbst im Gemeinderat eines Dorfes in Isaan.

Vielleicht wird genau daraus eine neue Generation entstehen.

Eine Gemeinschaft, die weiter wächst

Im Jahr 2026 ist Volunt2Thai längst mehr als nur ein Projekt.

Es ist eine internationale Gemeinschaft aus Volunteers, Lehrern, Familien, Unterstützern und Kindern geworden, die gemeinsam an dieselbe Idee glauben:

Volunt2Thai zeigt bis heute, dass nachhaltige Veränderung nicht in Großstädten oder Konferenzräumen beginnen muss.

Manchmal beginnt sie einfach in einem kleinen Dorf zwischen Reisfeldern in Nordostthailand.

Mit einer Idee. Mit Mut. Und mit Menschen, die nicht weggesehen haben.

In contemporary higher education and international mobility programs, intercultural competence has become an increasingly important field of learning. However, many of these competencies are difficult to develop through theoretical instruction alone.

Community-based volunteering in rural environments offers a practical framework for experiential intercultural learning. Within the context of Volunt2Thai, participants are immersed in everyday village life in Northeast Thailand, where intercultural interaction is not simulated but experienced directly through daily collaboration, communication, and shared social participation.

A story about success, responsibility, and the question of what truly remains from a life

When Raimund Wagner began building a non-profit initiative in rural Northeast Thailand in 2013, many people thought his decision made little sense.

Some wondered why anyone would voluntarily walk away from an international career. Others assumed it was a temporary phase. Many simply could not understand why an entrepreneur would consciously give up income, security, and professional status.

Today, more than a decade later, some of his older friends say something very different:

"You did the right thing. And you did it at the right time."

Back then, Wagner was 44 years old.

He had already lived several professional lives.

His story did not begin in boardrooms or universities. He grew up in modest circumstances. Illness and financial hardship shaped family life. From an early age, he learned to take responsibility. There were few role models, little guidance, and no clearly defined path ahead.

Perhaps that is exactly why he developed a trait that would define much of his life: a willingness to take unfamiliar roads.

He worked as a cook, butcher, waiter, bartender, DJ, furniture salesman, and air freight clerk. Later came professional training in export management, entrepreneurship, and product management. What others might have considered detours became, for him, an education in life itself.

In the early 1990s, curiosity led him to Southeast Asia. He invested his savings in travel, language studies, and new experiences. He learned Thai, worked as an interpreter and mediator between European and Asian companies, and began to understand two worlds that could hardly have been more different.

While many of his peers built careers within Europe, Wagner spent years moving between Austria, Germany, Thailand, other parts of Asia, and the United States. He developed international markets, negotiated across continents, and worked with technology companies that were later acquired by major American corporations.

From the outside, it looked like the classic success story of an international executive.

But the more of the world he saw, the more clearly he recognized its contrasts.

Thailand left a particularly deep impression on him.

Not the Thailand of beaches, resorts, and travel brochures.

The Thailand of villages.

There he encountered families whose realities rarely appear in tourism campaigns. Parents left their homes to seek work in Bangkok or overseas. Children often remained behind in the care of grandparents. Many of them were intelligent, curious, and eager to learn.

What they lacked was not talent.

It was opportunity.

"At some point, I could no longer remain just an observer," Wagner recalls. "I knew I could help."

The thought stayed with him.

As the years passed, he found himself asking a question that many people confront much later in life:

What do I want to leave behind?

A successful businessman?

An entrepreneur?

An executive with an international résumé?

Or something that extends beyond professional achievement?

Over time, Wagner came to understand how temporary many of the things people spend their lives pursuing really are.

Companies can be sold.

Markets can disappear.

Money can be lost.

Careers eventually end.

What remains are experiences.

Knowledge.

Relationships.

And the impact we leave on other people's lives.

"The most important decisions in my life were influenced by people I met," he says. "Their experiences, their advice, and sometimes simply their example."

That realization became the foundation of a decision that would change the course of his life.

In 2013, together with his family, he founded Volunt2Thai.

The idea was simple.

Children in rural Northeast Thailand should have access to international experiences and perspectives.

At the same time, young people from Europe, North America, and elsewhere should have the opportunity to discover a side of Thailand far removed from tourism, consumerism, and holiday resorts.

For Wagner, this exchange was never a one-way act of charity.

The volunteers learn as much as they contribute.

They learn patience.

Community.

Responsibility.

And they experience a way of life fundamentally different from their own.

Meanwhile, village children gain exposure to a world that might otherwise remain beyond their reach.

For Wagner, education means far more than classroom instruction.

Education means orientation.

Self-confidence.

The ability to adapt to change and recognize opportunities.

Yet building a non-profit organization was far from a romantic adventure.

To fully commit himself to this new chapter, Wagner spent the following years legally liquidating several companies with international operations.

Not selling them.

Not simply handing them over.

Liquidating them through formal legal processes.

A step that required years of work and involved significant financial losses and personal risk.

Contracts had to be honored.

Obligations fulfilled.

Legal responsibilities completed.

"Many people think you can simply flip a switch and start something new," Wagner says. "The reality is far more complicated."

With that decision, he left behind more than businesses.

He left behind a lifestyle.

Airports.

Hotels.

Constant travel.

A life shaped by negotiations, schedules, and international projects.

For the first time, he wanted to be present.

He wanted to watch his own children grow up.

And he wanted to witness the children of surrounding villages grow alongside them and shape their futures together.

While many entrepreneurs at this stage of life focus on expanding wealth and securing their legacy, Wagner chose a different path.

He invested much of his time, experience, savings, and remaining energy into something that offered no financial return.

Instead, it offered something else.

Purpose.

Responsibility.

And the opportunity to help shape the future.

Today, he describes building a non-profit organization as the most difficult challenge of his professional life.

Not because of finances.

But because of people.

"In business, you work with metrics, budgets, and clear objectives. In a non-profit, you can work eighteen hours a day and still not know whether funding for the next project will be available."

Most importantly, he had to learn new lessons himself.

Patience.

Trust.

Empathy.

Tolerance.

And sometimes compassion toward himself.

The transition also meant letting go of certain ideas about success.

Less status.

Less luxury.

Less appearance.

But more connection.

More community.

More responsibility.

And ultimately, more meaning.

Today, more than a decade after founding Volunt2Thai, Wagner continues to live in rural Northeast Thailand. Together with his Thai-Austrian family, he remains involved in educational initiatives, cultural exchange programs, and community development projects.

When asked whether the sacrifices were worth it, he does not hesitate.

"Companies come and go. Markets change. Careers end. But when a child gains better opportunities through education, the effects can last for decades."

Perhaps that is the real story of Raimund Wagner.

Not the story of a manager.

Not the story of an entrepreneur.

Not the story of international business.

But the story of a man who decided that the most important project of his life would not be a company.

When international volunteers visit rural Thailand, many notice the same thing: local children often study English for years in school, yet many still struggle to have even a simple conversation.

At first glance, this can be surprising. Thai children are curious, intelligent, and often excited to meet people from other countries. The challenge is not a lack of motivation. Rather, it stems from the fact that Thai and English are fundamentally different languages.

Understanding these differences helps explain why learning English can be such a demanding journey for many Thai children.

Two Completely Different Language Systems

English belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family and uses the Latin alphabet. Thai belongs to the Kra-Dai language family and has developed independently from European languages.

Even the writing systems are entirely different.

English uses 26 letters. Thai has 44 consonants, numerous vowel symbols, and tone markers. There are no uppercase and lowercase letters, and words are not always separated by spaces in the same way as in English.

For a Thai child, learning English is not simply a matter of memorizing new vocabulary. It often means learning an entirely new way of reading, writing, and understanding language.

The Challenge of Pronunciation

One of the biggest obstacles is pronunciation.

Many English sounds simply do not exist in Thai.

English contains many combinations of consonants that are uncommon in Thai.

Thai verbs do not change according to tense or subject.

Thai Is a Tonal Language

Perhaps the most significant difference is that Thai is a tonal language.

Thai uses five tones, and changing the tone of a word can completely change its meaning.

In English, tone is mainly used to express emotion, emphasis, or intention. In Thai, tone is an essential part of the word itself.

Thai children grow up paying close attention to pitch and tone. When they learn English, they must shift their attention to pronunciation features that are often completely different.

Limited Opportunities to Practice

In many rural parts of Thailand, children have relatively few opportunities to use English outside the classroom.

Unlike children in many European countries, they may have limited exposure to English-speaking environments, conversations, or media in their daily lives.

Language learning requires regular use. Without opportunities to practice, progress is naturally slower.

Learning a language without speaking it regularly is much like learning to ride a bicycle by reading instructions alone.

Learning for Exams Rather Than Communication

Traditional language education often places a strong emphasis on grammar, vocabulary memorization, and examination results.

As a result, many students know the rules of English but feel uncomfortable using the language in real conversations.

The challenge is often not a lack of knowledge but a lack of confidence and practical experience.

The Fear of Making Mistakes

Cultural factors can also influence language learning.

Thai society places great value on respect, harmony, and avoiding embarrassment.

Many children worry about making mistakes or being laughed at by classmates. As a result, they may hesitate to speak even when they know the correct answer.

This reluctance can slow down the development of conversational skills.

Why International Volunteers Can Make a Difference

This is where international volunteers can have a remarkable impact.

When children meet people from different countries, English suddenly becomes more than a school subject. It becomes a tool for real communication.

Children discover that they can use English to ask questions, share stories, play games, sing songs, and build friendships.

Most importantly, they learn that communication is more important than perfection.

Many educators and volunteers observe that the greatest improvement is often not vocabulary or grammar, but confidence.

More Than Just a Language

For many children in rural Thailand, English represents much more than another subject at school. It can provide access to education, international opportunities, and a broader understanding of the world.

Understanding the linguistic and cultural challenges they face helps teachers, volunteers, and visitors support them more effectively.

Behind every hesitant English sentence is often a child crossing one of the largest language gaps in the world — and taking an important step toward connecting with a global community.

One of the techniques I use when teaching English to Thai students is something very simple, but often very effective.

Instead of immediately translating a sentence into correct Thai, I ask the students to translate each English word separately. Then I ask them to look at the result and rearrange it into a natural Thai sentence.

This helps them understand an important lesson:

Languages are not just collections of words. They are different ways of organizing thoughts.

Step 1: Word-for-word translation

Why It Works

Many Thai students try to translate English directly into Thai. When they see the strange word-for-word result, they begin to understand why English sentences are built differently.

Instead of simply memorizing rules, they discover those rules themselves.

There are many reasons why children, adolescents, and young adults leading innocent lives can gradually slip into a world of drugs, violence, and prostitution — the underworld. This applies not only to Thailand, but also to the Western world.

In order to prevent this from happening, certain basic conditions must be met so that young people are able to pursue self-determined lives. Education, guidance, and support in developing their unique skills and talents are key to giving youth independence and opportunities for the future.

Social competence plays an important role in Thailand and is traditionally taught through strong family structures and Buddhist values. Thai girls are often raised to become caring women and good mothers, while boys are encouraged to become responsible fathers and providers.

But life does not always go according to plan. Illness, accidents, poor harvests, dysfunctional family relationships, addiction, gambling, or the sudden loss of a family member can quickly drive families into poverty. In Thailand there is often little social protection, and in many cases families are forced to mortgage or sell their land, putting their only source of income at risk.

In rural Thailand, the transition from childhood to adulthood is often abrupt rather than gradual. Children who were Junior High School students only months earlier may suddenly find themselves expected to financially support their families. Many leave their villages at the age of 15 or 16 — sometimes even younger — to search for work in Bangkok or other larger towns.

Imagine being a teenager from rural North-East Thailand — often a girl, though the same applies to boys — and facing only two options: working endlessly in the fields for almost no income, or leaving home to search for work in the city in the hope of supporting your family.

You leave home carrying the advice and hopes of your parents, but completely unprepared for the harsh realities of city life and the competitive business world. Due to inadequate education, you lack many basic skills and opportunities. The knowledge learned at home often provides little help in an unfamiliar urban environment.

Continuing your education in High School or even attending university becomes almost impossible because there simply is not enough money. You feel trapped by circumstances and forced to find any possible way to help your family survive.

Tourist hotspots appear to offer a solution. Many have heard stories of easy money and high demand for young women and men. Driven by hope and good intentions, you convince yourself that somehow everything will work out, and you leave for the unknown.

You arrive in places like Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, or Koh Samui with optimism, but reality quickly sets in. You share a tiny room with several other people, all struggling with similar problems and pressures. Together you search for work, trying to maintain a respectable appearance while your savings disappear rapidly.

Eventually the money runs out. You are forced to accept any work available, no matter how poorly paid or exhausting it may be. Friends or roommates may lend you money for food or rent, but this only increases the pressure and dependency.

Meanwhile, everywhere around you, you see wealthy tourists enjoying themselves. They spend freely, shop without concern, sit in bars with young women and men, and appear to live without worries. You think about your family back home — the people you love who desperately need financial support.

Returning home without money feels impossible. In Thai society, “losing face” carries deep emotional weight. You feel responsible for succeeding and helping your family.

At some point, sex work no longer feels unthinkable. You tell yourself, “This is just how things are now.” Others around you explain how it works and reassure you that it is normal. You are young, attractive, and desperate for income. Hunger and fear make the decision easier than it should ever be.

The lack of education and opportunity leaves little room for self-determination. Over time, survival becomes more important than personal boundaries or long-term emotional well-being.

Having only recently been a child, loved and protected by your family, you suddenly begin to understand that your appearance and sexuality have become economic assets.

“Sex sells,” and so you learn to become “sexy.” Over time this damages young people psychologically. What may initially feel exciting or empowering slowly reduces a person to their body alone. Self-esteem fades, emotional barriers disappear, and exploitation becomes normalized.

At the same time, many young people develop a distorted image of the West based solely on their interactions with tourists. Visitors are seen spending money freely, partying, and behaving without responsibility. Few young Thais have the opportunity to understand what life is actually like for these foreigners in their own countries outside of tourism.

So you adapt. You become tougher. Maybe you begin working as a “Coyote Girl,” encouraging customers to buy drinks and spend money. Soon you realize that far more money can be earned through additional “services.” Customers ask you to leave with them, and eventually financial pressure and temptation overcome resistance.

Bars often pay attendance fees simply to ensure there are always enough girls and boys available for customers. The environment offers friendship, excitement, parties, alcohol, and sometimes even opportunities to learn English. For a while it feels like an escape from worry and poverty.

But after months or years, many young women and men become physically and emotionally exhausted. Drugs and alcohol often become ways to escape reality. What once felt temporary slowly becomes everyday life.

Boys and young men can also become trapped in these environments. Some join gangs, sell drugs, steal, or work for criminal businesses. The constant struggle for money shapes daily life for many of these young people.

Simple daily wage labor, such as construction work, rarely provides enough income to support an entire family back home. At the same time, the physical demands of manual labor are difficult to sustain for long periods, especially for young workers.

Many children also lack the safety of a stable home environment or a supportive village community to return to after failure or hardship. Entire families are often affected by alcoholism, poverty, illness, or debt. As a result, children grow up surrounded by constant insecurity, stress, and sometimes even hunger.

For a few, places like Pattaya may lead to financial success and a “rags to riches” story. But for many others, the outcome is physical illness, psychological trauma, addiction, or prison.

Despite everything, most of these young people are driven by the same dream: creating a better life for themselves and their families. Many are motivated not by selfishness, but by responsibility and sacrifice for the people they love.

How can Volunt2Thai help counteract this development?

The long-term presence of Volunt2Thai volunteers aims to create sustainable change in the villages over the coming decade. Education in foreign languages, exposure to different cultures, and a broader understanding of the world can positively influence today’s children and their families throughout their development.

As the project grows, it can also contribute to long-term economic development within the region by creating connections, opportunities, and increased visibility for rural communities.

The fundamental goal is to ensure that children from these villages grow up with opportunities similar to those available to young people in wealthier parts of Thailand or in Western countries — opportunities for education, career choice, self-determination, and international communication.

Positive interactions between volunteers and local communities create meaningful memories and mutual understanding.

As a volunteer, you become a role model representing your own society and culture. Through daily interaction, villagers gain a more balanced and positive understanding of Western people and values. These experiences encourage openness, trust, friendship, and intercultural understanding.

English is already taught through our volunteers in local schools, and German language education will soon follow. This cultural exchange gives children valuable communication skills and greater confidence in interacting with the wider world.

Through the project, young people receive not only improved educational opportunities, but also the chance to learn from both Thai and Western cultural perspectives. Over time, stereotypes created through one-sided tourism begin to disappear.

The connection between education, opportunity, and long-term prosperity becomes increasingly understood and appreciated. Misconceptions — such as the belief that “money grows on trees” in Western countries — gradually fade through genuine human interaction and education.

Today’s elementary school students will become the working generation of tomorrow. Within the next 10–18 years, they will enter the labor market and shape the future of their communities.

Our goal is to create the best possible conditions for their future by equipping them with confidence, foreign language skills, intercultural experience, and a broader understanding of the world.

As the project continues to grow, it will also contribute directly to the economic development of the villages, creating long-term benefits for the entire region.

Learning foreign languages and participating in intercultural exchange are essential in today’s global economy. At the same time, volunteers benefit personally as well by developing their professional abilities, communication skills, cultural understanding, and emotional intelligence.

Volunt2Thai – How One Idea Became an International Movement in Rural Thailand

Between rice fields, small village schools, and a community that refused to give up, one of Thailand’s most unique volunteer projects was born.

It Did Not Start as a Project. It Started with an Experience.

More than 25 years ago, Raimund Wagner arrived in Thailand almost by accident. The young Austrian had originally planned to travel to Australia after finishing his education, but life took him to Bangkok instead — a city full of contrasts.

On one side were modern office towers, international companies, and rapid economic growth.

On the other side were the slums.

It was there that an experience began which would later shape the creation of Volunt2Thai.

Raimund quickly learned the Thai language and soon worked as an interpreter for international companies. But instead of remaining only in the business world, he spent more and more time inside Bangkok’s poorest neighborhoods. He wanted to understand how people lived — and why so many young people ended up trapped in violence, drugs, gang crime, and prostitution.

He sat with families inside small tin-roof houses and listened to stories about poverty, lack of education, and lost opportunities. Young men worked for criminal gangs. Young women struggled to support their children. Many children grew up without any real future.

Again and again, he heard the same origin:

Isaan — rural Northeast Thailand.

Parents had left their villages to search for work in Bangkok. Their children stayed behind with grandparents. Entire generations were missing from the villages.

These experiences never left him.

2013 – The Birth of Volunt2Thai

Many years later, Raimund visited his wife’s village in rural Isaan.

And suddenly he saw the same pattern again.

Children growing up without parents. Grandparents raising entire families. Very limited opportunities. Almost no access to further education after compulsory schooling ended.

At that time, the local mayor asked him a simple question:

“Can you do something to improve the situation here?”

At first, Raimund saw only emptiness.

No tourism. No industry. No economic opportunities.

But gradually, he realized that this “nothingness” was actually the region’s greatest opportunity.

Unlike the overcrowded cities, the villages still had something valuable: community spirit, traditional culture, local knowledge, and people willing to work together.

That was the moment Volunt2Thai was born.

What started in 2013 as a small private initiative with family and close friends slowly developed into an international community and social development project in the heart of rural Thailand.

Raimund and his Thai family invested their own savings into the project. Personal valuables were sold to finance the first steps. There were no investors and no guarantees.

Only one vision:

To give children in rural Thailand better opportunities for their future.

The First Volunteers Arrived

In the beginning, nobody knew Volunt2Thai.

For almost an entire year, the small team worked constantly through social media and personal networking to attract the first volunteers. When the first volunteers finally arrived, something special began to happen.

The volunteers were not treated like tourists.

They became part of the village community.

They taught English in local schools. Organized creative activities. Played football with the children. Learned Thai language and culture. Shared meals with local families. Experienced the real Thailand far away from mass tourism.

Most importantly, they gave the children something priceless:

Attention, motivation, and new perspectives.

Volunt2Thai in 2026

Today, more than a decade later, Volunt2Thai has grown into an international network and one of the most unique independent volunteer projects in Thailand.

The project has evolved far beyond traditional volunteering.

The modern Volunt2Thai Campus & Cultural Centre has become a meeting place for people from all over the world.

Today the project includes:

Volunt2Thai now works closely with numerous schools in the region and has welcomed hundreds of volunteers from many different countries.

Many volunteers do not simply visit once.

They return. Bring friends. Support the project long-term. Or describe their experience in Thailand as life-changing.

More Than Volunteering in Thailand

What makes Volunt2Thai different from many other volunteer programs is its philosophy.

This is not “voluntourism.”

It is about genuine human connection.

Volunteers live directly inside the community. They experience daily village life, learn Thai culture, and build real friendships with local people.

At the same time, the children gain something equally valuable.

For many of them, volunteers provide their first direct contact with people from different countries and cultures. The children gain confidence, motivation, and often completely new dreams for their future.

Education as the Key to Change

From the beginning, the vision behind Volunt2Thai was always larger than volunteering itself.

The project aims to help young people create opportunities within their own region — without poverty, crime, or prostitution becoming their only possible future.

Education remains at the center of everything.

Because education creates opportunity.

And opportunity changes lives.

Perhaps one of the children learning English with volunteers today will one day sit on a village council and help shape the future of rural Thailand.

Perhaps a completely new generation is already growing here.

A Community That Continues to Grow

In 2026, Volunt2Thai is no longer simply a project.

It has become an international community of volunteers, teachers, families, students, supporters, and children who all believe in the same idea:

That small human connections can create lasting change.

That cultural exchange brings people together.

And that real social impact begins when people take responsibility for one another.

Volunt2Thai continues to prove that meaningful change does not always begin in large cities, government offices, or conference rooms.

Sometimes it begins in a small village surrounded by rice fields in Northeast Thailand.

With an idea. With courage. And with people who decided not to look away.
