       ‘ shizun. why must you be so cold to this disciple ? and after all the effort this lowly disciple used to gather the materials. .. . ’ his voice, so perfectly mimicking the patheticness of his late mirror, criess pitifully throughout the abode. silent steps guide him to his mentor’s back, deceptively gentle hands rest on his shoulders. 

       ‘ was it not you who told me all sins could be forgiven? why must you turn your back on me now, shizun?  ’ he’s simpering, crooning into his ear, but where he cannot see luo binghe is smiling, an indescribable joy at the anguish his past mentor must be in building up from within. to think, he hasn’t even received his gift yet and he’s already so cold. 

         with his shizun’s possible reaction in mind, he gathers from his sleeve a beautiful trinket, a metal hairpin with shards of polished, glistening metal twinkling from their little chains. thirteen in all, an auspicious number; one for each peak lord, and the late binghe’s as a last minute thought. he knows not if shen qingqiu would recognize the shards of his former companion’s swords in the hairpiece, but the sight of him decorated with their memorabilia excites him all the same. 

     contrasted to his mentor’s fear, binghe’s eyes reflect only detached amusement, an idle curiosity unfitting of this moment. he was promised, many times over by this man, that his deeds could be forgiven and his sins righted with time. after his death, he’d wondered if this would still hold true. 

     it seems not.

    it’s easy to forgive someone for their sins when it has no bearing on one’s own life. when faced with the death of his true disciple--  

     he never had a place in this man’s heart. even when they’re worlds apart, this man is still unceasingly, mercilessly cruel. the kindness he offers, the future he sees- who is it meant for? standing there, when he sees his face- 

     it’s a familiar feeling. he’s felt it before, in the eyes of the greedy, the desperate, the wanting. the ones whose eyes are on him, but with sights on something intangible. it was annoyance, that hypocritical kindness that drove him to murder. perhaps, he thought absently, if the one who was he but was so different-- if he were to disappear,  if he were gone, shizun would finally deign to lay his eyes on what was left? 

     it was that sort of idle thought that drew his sword, drawing himself into the world left behind and slaughtering him, until nothing was left but the smears of blood on their weapons and ground. it was that sort of thought that drew him back, an uncommon excitement to his actions as he stepped out of the portal and back to ging jing peak.

       ah, but why did he expect any differently? this man, this man is the same as them all. his hypocritical words, forgiving him for the sins of his past-- but. when faced with the same suffering as the other survivors, he turned against him, as they all do. no loyalty is absolute, no love is selfless. even kindness has its exemptions-- 

‘ you needn’t worry your pretty little head, this incident is merely an annoyance at best. ’ there’s a pat to cuoi’s head, but it’s devoid of warmth and the smile he holds is predatory. ‘ if you invite disaster so explicitly, who am i to refuse ? ’
