How many times could Sera repeat that Imani was kind? The way Serafina’s words kept hitting her as if the lawyer was just being nice was starting to make Imani feel like maybe all of those mornings and ‘almosts’ had been just her imagination working to fool her. It was either that, or Imani had completely lost her touch when it came to flirting with others. “I’m not nice.” The lawyer assured the other. She leaned back against her seat, one arm moving to the back of the small couch in the booth she shared with Sera. She wanted to watch her from that angle, the colorful lights painting the other’s face with different shades and intensities. “But I’ll be nice if you want me to be.” If that was what Sera wanted to. Imani then shrugged her shoulders, her fingers gently caressing the glass in her hands and watching as the other squirmed under her smirks and compliments. “ And why haven’t you picked any other projects? ” Usually people left Maple Brook and went to Palm Beach or to the Hamptons, so it wasn’t like Sera would have much trouble. Or maybe she just hasn't found anything interesting. “ As for me, you know how it is. Just working and trying to get this beautiful woman to go home with me, now that we have no professional ties between us. ” A smirk spread across her lips, and disappeared way too soon behind the drink Imani brought up for a sip. “ So… Your projects. Tell me more about the options. ”
Sera was alight with electricity, her eyes trying to convey everything that was trapped in her throat. Ever since she had first seen Imani, she had wanted something more with her. The memory of feeling exposed and naked in front of the lawyer even in her work overalls still haunted her mind.
It was with a depressing, but perhaps expected, realization, that Sera becomes aware she had been playing it too safe, and her subtlety had been lost in translation. But it wouldn't stay like this, she wouldn't allow it. She would be braver, more forward, more obvious for Imani. The thought of the beautiful, charismatic, and delightful companion slipping through her fingertips was one she couldn't stand to see.
Imani's outstretched arm was a welcome sight, and the older woman scooted in closer to her, the tension between them seeming to thicken. Serafina chanced a glace at Imani's full and supple lips, then re-met her gaze with determination and interest.
"Well, that's news to me." Sera's expression turned coy, and she gazed into Imani's brown eyes with interest and curiosity. "You've been nothing but good to me." Her shoulder bumped against Imani playfully as she continued, "I suppose that makes me lucky." Sera's eyes lingered on Imani's face for a moment to long, studying refined yet warm features, committing the woman to memory.
"It's the end of the year, so everything has slowed down." Sera recited the phrase like she had a hundred times before to all the people who had inquired. She drowns her frustration in the drink for a moment, before setting her glass back down. With Imani, she could dig under her placid pleasantry surface and give her something more honest, more truthful. Did Imani bring that side out of her, or did Serafina just trust her that implicitly? "Honestly, nothing has felt worthwhile or had a deadline that was remotely manageable. Someone wanted their whole first floor restored and decorated by Thanksgiving." She scrunched her face in annoyance, then continued. "I'm worried I might be losing interest in the whole thing. I do miss working on your home. But…" Sera shook her head, work was not the kind of conversation she wanted to unwind with tonight. "But that's not fun to talk about." Serafina trailed off, moving her hand to rest gingerly on Imani's thigh. How was that for subtle? "If it means we're finally going to act of this, then I'm already looking forward to spending another morning with you." Her hand slid a little further up the younger woman's thigh as she leaned in close. "Maybe, I'll even make you pancakes." She giggled at her own forwardness, and leaned back just a touch. "That is, if you have pre-made batter."
Lalita was, admittedly, putting a lot of pressure on herself with this. This - and this was taking some photos of some rental properties with a smiling lady in a blazer standing in front of them - was supposed to make it all worth it. It was supposed to make the years she spent in photography classes worth it, the five dollars a month she paid to keep her portfolio website up and running all worth it, and (in a way only Lalita's mind could connect or understand) it would make the last two years of her life worth it.
So. Lots of pressure.
She took a deep breath before knocking on the door, her hands finding their way to the camera slung around her neck and fiddling with the setting adjuster while she waited, trying her best not to freak out. "That makes two of us," Lalita admitted with a laugh that was more exhale than laughter. She didn't want to admit so early that this was her first actual photography gig, but it felt safe enough to admit she was nervous. Plus, she couldn't help it - this woman (Serafina, she had said) immediately seemed to put Lalita at ease.
"This place looks great," Lalita said honestly, finally taking a beat to look around. "You flipped this? Do you have a team behind you, or is it all you?"
"Thank you so much. You're too kind." Serafina smiled as she fiddled with her watch. "I do have a team and they're very good." Serafina smiled. "You know, I'm not fond of the word flip. Too many negative connotations and risky too! And it just sounds silly. Alas, no other word for it!" Serafina babbled. Her mind was begging for her to stop but her mouth just kept going. "My favorite projects are the ones where we can restore old homes to their former glory. However, yes, this one was a flip. I don't do the buying, just the renovating." She sighed.
She looked around at the home. With all the work she and her team put in, she hoped it was something that would stand the test of time. "Basically took everything out but the flooring. Even ripped out some walls!" Serafina chuckled at herself. She had done it again, a monologue of nerves. She combed her hair with her fingers. "I am so sorry. I have talked your ear off. Could I interest you in a drink or a snack? The house is staged so the refrigerator is packed with goodies."
She cleared her throat, looked away, and then took a few steps towards the kitchen. She had sufficiently embarrassed herself.
Even though Ema knew that they didn't have to bribe their friend, they still didn't mind taking her out to lunch as a little thank you for the favor. "Mm, I suppose that makes sense. Nobody's redoing their living rooms - how else would Santa get in if there's no fireplace with stockings on the mantle?" She teases, a soft chuckle leaving her lips. "Oh, it hasn't been that much. Not that we need an excuse to have lunch either." Ema points out. They weren't too far from the restaurant, thankfully, already looking forward to the bread basket that awaited them. "Crazy to think that the year's almost over. I feel like this year's just flown by." Between working on their next book and starting to plan their wedding with their fiancée, Ema's time had been filled. They didn't mind it though, as both of the things that were taking up their time were things that they were looking forward to. "We should be there in a couple of minutes, don't worry. Want to get a couple of appetizers to share to start?"
Serafina couldn't help but giggle at Ema's joke. It was rare to find a friendship so easy and casual, especially since they didn't see each other due to their busy schedules. But when they did, it truly made up for lost time.
"All the Halloween festivities following but first snow! Oh, and then all the cute little Christmas time gatherings!" She paused, her eyes filling up with a childlike wonder that had not lessened over her many years. "The last three months of the year really are absolutely the best! Do you have any plans for the upcoming holidays?"
The cute little bistro came into view with its darling window accents. Sera could tell it was a remainder of a time long gone with a fresh modernity to it. It had been a while since she had been to the bistro but she was very excited to see their autumnal menu.
"What kind of appetizer are you thinking?" Sera hummed. "Something seasonal or classic?"

There was something about Sera that had always intrigued Imani. Her giddiness, her liveliness, the youth she felt in the other’s voice–even if Imani was younger than her. The lawyer had been so used to being the serious one in the room, that Sera’s warmth was refreshing. Her giggles felt like a sunny afternoon and for yet another time ever since meeting her, the brunette wondered what it would be like to kiss her. If she would feel her heart beat fast like Imani did, if she would let Imani give her the world and a moon or two in return. Still, the lawyer sat down across from Serafina, sporting a fun smile as she shrugged off her suit jacket and placed it by her side. “ I mean, there are some things you can definitely help me with, especially in a place like this, but I’d be perfectly fine with your company too, Ser. ” Taking a hold of her glass, Imani gently clinked it against the one she’d brought over to Serafina and then, took a sip from her gin and tonic, before motioning her hand towards the other woman. “ It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How have you been? I have to admit, I really miss waking up to your bright attitude early in the morning. ” Because that had been her good-mornings for the first three months Imani had been in town and Serafina was finishing the renovations in her house. They’d have breakfast together, laugh together, go over their plans for the day and Imani would do her damn best to keep things strictly professional between the duo. Now that they were no longer attached by professional strings, she wondered how Sera would react to the things she kept from saying back then. “ You look absolutely breathtaking tonight, by the way. I mean… not that you don’t always look drop dead gorgeous. How many of these thirty-year-olds have asked for your number yet? ”
Serafina clinked her glass with Imani. Pleased as punch that Imani said she wanted her company. The smile just kept getting bigger. It was something Sera had noticed around Imani. Her steadiness, her dedication, and the fact that Sera just couldn't help but smiling around her.
"You're so sweet. I was worried I was annoying you in the mornings. You never seemed like it. You were always so warm and inviting. Plus the coffee was always amazing. But not everyone is a morning person!" Sera laughed. "I've been good, work has been slowing down as the kids are in school and no one wants to start a project before the holidays, I guess. But you have to tell me everything you've been up to. But I need to pick something up, it's driving me crazy."
Then the compliment hit and it felt like the room went still and silent for a heartbeat.
"Oh." She said simply but it implied sudden realization that her feelings weren't one sided and the anticipation of their next much. "Thank you, Imani. You're too kind." Her voice quiet and her cheeks getting hotter by the second. She swallowed her shock and embarrassment. In hopes that this moment would be the start of getting to know Imani on a deeper level. "You know, you're just the kind of person I wanted to meet tonight. Lucky for me, I already know you." Sera's eyes finally met Imani's. "How should we spend tonight?"

with the orange stanley being taken on by her best friend, helena took a sip of the purple one — unbeknowst to her (whom, yes, had already forgotten which was which), hers was filled with alcohol and she got a startling jump of energy with the sip. "you should get one of this one," she offers the purple bottle, the ghost of a smirk crossing her lips. the expression turns into a grimace at sera's lack of encouragement — why couldn't she look a little odd? surely there are no paps around... the eldest does look around them, and ends up acquiescing, continuing the jog even if most of her body has begun to burn.
"always, babe. we do deserve some rewards." whomever has said that carb loading after exercising wasn't worth it, was someone very wrong on her books. "i think there's a quaint little one just a block away." the promise of food and cute drinks is energizing. "but we could look for something more distant if you hate me. i'm sure there's some on yelp." people still use yelp, right?
"Oh hell no, we will be stopping." Serafina's laugh came out a hair too close to a wheeze.
Sera traded the stanleys with Helena. Sera took a sip and nearly choked. "That is some watered down wine. We need to get you a good glass." Sera chuckled and huffed. Sera started--what felt like--dragging her body towards the nearest carbohydrate. It looked like a slower but normal jog.
"So, what's been going on lately? Are you downloading the dating applications?" She fluttered her fingers like the idea of apps were sheer magic. Sera had a smart phone for pictures and that was about it. "I was going to download one but ended up not doing it."
location: a renovated house within the new york stateline time: september 17th for: lalita kumar @sundresscd
Serafina paced as she waited for the photographer. This was a job that was unusual for Serafina. She was the one typically behind the camera taking rudimentary pictures of the homes she had restored or lovely little trinkets.
This time, Serafina would be in front of the camera as part of an advertisement. The idea of her face all around Maplebrook and other places made her cringe. The photographer had been eager to agree to the job, so Serafina was trying to ease her nerves with this knowledge.
And who really looked at advertisements any way? Serafina thought as she adjusted her cream blazer.
There was a quick rap at the door and Serafina walked through the extended front entry hallway to greet her.
"Hello! I'm Serafina Arden. You must be Lalita? It's so good to finally meet you!! Come in, come in!" Serafina rushed her very rehearsed easygoing greeting. She gestured for Lalita to come in. "Did you find the place okay? Is the lighting alright?" Serafina finally took a breath. "Forgive me, I'm all nerves."

After a long day at the office, Imani figured it would do her some good to head out to a bar and let her body relax with a nice drink in her hand–and maybe do some flirting. It had been a while since she hadn’t felt that level of attraction for someone. The last time had been when she and her house renovator had shared a roof, just shyly off three months ago, but for obvious reasons, the duo never crossed that line and kept things professional. Maybe it had been because Imani needed people to keep her enticed, entertained and stimulated, but it felt like within each passing day, it was getting harder to meet and connect to others on a level that would lead to anything romantic. But that didn’t mean she would stop trying when given the chance. So, there she was, sitting by the bar and nursing a cocktail to relax her mind. With her back turned to the entrance and casual conversation keeping her entertained for a little bit, the younger lawyer only noticed Serafina’s presence when she went to the restroom. Imani ordered another round of drinks, this time adding one for Sera and then joined the brunette at her booth. “ Of all the gin joints in the world, am I right? ” Imani chuckled, then placed the glass in front of the other. “ Mind if I join you? It was a little lonely by the bar. ” A smile followed. “ Unless you’re waiting on someone? ”
Serafina didn't know what possessed her to leave Maplebrook for the evening. She hadn't told her friends. She hadn't asked anyone to go with her. Serafina was someone who always moved in a group. It was out of character for her to be alone but Serafina was trying to get used to her own company...and maybe the company of another woman.
Unfortunately for Serafina, the bar was not promising. The woman of almost 50 was not looking to be anyone's sugar mama or interested in anyone younger than 35. Also, she was convinced she still smelled like the oak wood she had been sawing earlier, despite the shower and primping that took place before hand. Serafina's head was spinning with everything wrong with her.
Then Serafina was surprised by a familiar face and all the insanity melted away.
"Imani!" Serafina's smile widened as she saw the woman. "No, I'm alone tonight. Please. Sit! Sit!"
She scooted in her booth, all but rocking back and forth in glee. Serafina was downright giddy to see Imani. The fact that Imani already had a drink for Serafina meant something special to Serafina. Imani was so thoughtful. This small move made Serafina feel like the flutters in her belly weren't one sided.
"it's so great to see you. You look amazing." Serafina sighed. "What are you looking for tonight? Anything I can help you with?" Serafina scrunched her face and laughed at herself. "I realize how that sounds in a place like this."
closed starter for @vlntagely location: outside central library, on their way to roux bistro for lunch
"thanks for coming with me today. i know hanging up fliers isn't the most exciting thing, even if i did bribe you with lunch." ema chuckles, shrugging her shoulders slightly. she was mostly teasing, not sure she had to bribe her friend to spend an afternoon with her, but still. hanging up book club fliers probably wasn't the most exciting way to spend an hour or two. "are you hungry? i hope so, because i'm starving."
Ema never needed to bribe Sera but Sera was happy with the promise of lunch, nevertheless. The two had spent a few hours: chatting and enjoying comfortable silence while they spotted places to put up posters.
"Of course!" Sera said cheerfully as she taped another poster up. "I'm always happy to skip work for a few hours to help a friend. Besides, work has been slow any way. After the rush of summer, seems like things have cooled off. No one wants to redesign a living room with the holidays around the corner."
Sera put the rest of her fliers in her purple crochet tote and smiled at the mention of lunch. "I really am. All this walking always gives me an appetite. How much longer until roux bistro?"

armed with two stanleys — one filled with water, and another with diluted wine — helena suffered on. once upon a time, she'd be getting her cardio with an instructor screaming about her ass looking good on tv, but those days are gone; instead, she's beside someone whose encouragement may just work a little less, thus why her pace is barely above a walk by now (not that she will complain about serafina's best efforts — not about that, anyways). “you need to hydrate.” the eldest parrots, offering the orange bottle to her friend. “and i need to sit. you, with the better eyesight, find us a bench or something. i would sit on the ground, but, really, how would that look?” there's a beat. “no, really, how would that look, sera? do you think i can pull it off?”
Serafina Arden could haul, pull, and push anything but her body. She hated exercise for the sake of exercise but it was better with her friend. They had agreed to workout together as motivation but damn, they were dragging along.
Serafina nodded at the elder woman as she handed her a cup. "Thanks." She took a deep drink and listened as her best friend spoke.
"Keep going, Lena. It would look odd to say the least." Serafina huffed throughout the entire statement. She wanted desperately to lay out on someone's lawn, open up the Stanley cup, and pour it on herself. "It looks like there's a bench around the corner there. Just a few more steps!" Sera took a few more steps before turning around, hoping to entice her friend. "Maybe we can plot our way to a coffee shop, too. Are you interested?"
where: annual fair & carnival when: september 24th, midday who: samira & open (cap 1/3)
Maple Brook was always full of surprises and adventures, always keeping Sami's eyes and ears peeled for the next thing to captivate her. Today, it was the annual fair. She'd always pushed it off as a next year thing, too wrapped up in building a stable life to find time to relax and try new things. But, this was the year, she had told herself. Sami Rao would have and master a funnel cake for better or for worse. Standing in line for admissions, she raked a hand through her hair, pin straight but messy and a little out of place, and she was sure she had seen a split end or two this morning. Sami was still mulling over if she would cut her hair in a bob like she new a lot of young mother's did, but genuinely, she liked her length, and it made her feel a little more like herself to keep it.
"Can you believe admission is only a dollar?" She asked to the person next to her, her excitement brimming just under a carefully crafted facade of neutrality. "Well, with a book, of course." Nothing in life was free, she understood that. Her bag held about five books, because she had been certain for some reason that whichever one she handed off would somehow get rejected when she'd packed her purse. Now it felt juvenile and a little embarrassing to be lugging around it's heavy weight. "Did you bring a book for entry? I've got an extra if you need one." She scratched the back of her head and furrowed her brows, laughing slightly, "Several, actually. I love variety." She loved variety? Sami wanted to bang her head up against a wall, but unfortunately, they were outside in the fresh air.
After all these years, Serafina Arden was finally going to the Annual Maplebrook Fair and Carnival. Sure, she had gone as a child but it stopped being cool some time in her teenage years and she had never came back.
Work had been slow today. She told her assistant that she would be out for the rest of the day and to call her if Sera was needed. She wasn't sure why she decided the fair but while she was walking, she had seen an advertisement and the idea had been stuck in her head ever since.
So here she was today, in the admissions line. The line was an impressive turnout for midday. Sera dusted invisible lint off her white t-shirt, and hoped the powder sugar of the funnel cake, that she would inevitably get, would blend in.
As she was thinking about this, the woman in front of her turned around and began chatting. The woman had a sweet face although she was unfamiliar to Sera. Sure, she had seen her around but they had never spoken.
"You're too kind!" Serafina smiled widely, "The book would be really helpful, I apparently didn't read the fine print." She chuckled self-consciously. "What all did you bring? Have you read them?"
