I think one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in my life is that how I feel about (cis) men, that soul-deep rage and anger at the harm they inflict on this world and on me in particular, is how people of color (rightly) feel about white people.

As a white person, that’s a hard lesson. To realize that I’m the monster in this scenario. Not because I have any personal ill will toward people of color. Not because I’m a shitty or bad person per se*. But because I am part of that class of people who use their financial/political/military power to inflict almost unimaginable horrors on people who are not like me.

I can be a ‘liberal’ and still be racist. I can be ‘nice’ and still use the white power structure to endanger and harm others who ‘step out of line’.

I can’t change the past, but I can change my present and my future.

I can choose to learn all the subtle ways white supremacists spread their hateful lies. I can choose to tell other white people what I’ve learned. I can choose to NOT use my power to further endanger people of color. (ie: not calling the cops on ‘loitering’ people of color or whatever)

I can choose to see color because pretending differences don’t exist only helps those already in power maintain the status quo.

Fuck the status quo.

Fuck whiteness and the whole sick subtractive-humanity that defines humanity by stripping away everything that truly makes us human.

We can do better. We must do better.

And FUCKING VOTE THIS NOVEMBER.  Vote Blue, No Matter Who.
