While Canadians broadly support LGBTQ2S+ people and issues, they are less likely the engage in behaviours that show true allyship for the community, new polling conducted for Global News has found.
The majority of Canadians – 78 per cent – believe transgender people should be protected from discrimination in employment, housing and access to businesses. Seventy-four per cent believe that same-sex couples should have the same rights to adopt children as straight couples. However, the latest polling, conducted by Ipsos, found only a dismal one-in-10 consider themselves to be an active ally to the queer community.
Just under half (47 per cent) of Canadians express some degree of support, either in that they consider themselves active allies and/or engaged members of the community (10 per cent) or that they support the LGBTQ2S+ community, but do not actively engage in allyship (37 per cent).

Animal, plant, or mineral? 🤔
Animal!!
When looking at this dramatic deep-sea denizen, it may be difficult to discern its designation. That’s because this aquatic animal — related to jellies and sea anemones — effortlessly shifts between two striking appearances. When the mushroom soft coral’s tentacles are sealed shut, it sports the semblance of a shroom. But when it's time to snare its supper, it blossoms into a flowery facade. How does this marvelous mushroom soft coral snare its snacks? Its tantalizing tentacles capture tiny travelers with their venomous stinging cells. 🍄🌼🌊

Savvy shoppers know they can save big on a loaf of bread at Dollarama. But at more than a dozen of the Quebec-based company’s stores in Nova Scotia, there’s no bread on the shelves. Those stores have one thing in common: there’s a Sobeys nearby. Mary Wilson went shopping at Dollarama’s Cole Harbour location last month, and she asked a staff member if they sold bread. Wilson knew another Dollarama nearby sold bread. That’s where she usually got it. “When I couldn’t find it, I asked one of the employees if they still carry bread,” Wilson said in an interview with the Halifax Examiner. “He said, ‘We used to, but we don’t anymore.’ I asked him why, and he said, ‘We can’t sell it anymore because Sobeys owns the building and it’s a big moneymaker, and we’re not allowed to sell it.’”

Nova Scotia has become the first province to stop holding immigration detainees in its jails on behalf of the federal government. Canada Border Services Agency spokeswoman Rebecca Purdy says the province ended the practice Aug. 8. Other provinces, including British Columbia and Alberta, have said they too would stop holding immigration detainees. However, both of those provinces have agreed to temporarily continue housing high-risk detainees in jails, but are not accepting new inmates.

Canada is in deep crisis. It’s unfashionable in centrist circles to say so, but it’s true. The country is literally on fire and facing extraordinary and growing threats from climate change. It is staring down rising extremism, creeping toxic polarization, and low trust. Wealth inequality is on the rise. Its federal system is showing cracks, particularly when it comes to the relationship between Alberta and the national government. Oligopolies and monopolies run wild, exploiting consumers.
There are plenty of other problems too. But of the lot, the confluence of a few major challenges scream, House of cards coming down! Those are the country’s housing crisis, consumer debt, and high — and potentially rising — interest rates. Taken together, they paint a picture of working people staring down lives they can’t afford in the day-to-day. This hellish scenario persists, no matter how hard people work, and no matter how rigidly they follow the rules of the game — rules they were told are fair and just.

shit i’ve heard chemistry majors say
- *student in a lab coat, cutting in the cafeteria line* YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND I DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME MY EXPERIMENT IS GOING TO CATCH FIREEEE
- *loud pop* student, in very calm voice: well that was painful
- lab assistant, seeing me frantically pulling on gloves: oh no. what did you do now
- professor: come on guys, don’t hate on social sciences majors… it’s not their fault they were born this way
- so i was grading your tests last night. i wanted to kill someone.
- you have five minutes until the end of class to finish the test. but i want to go outside for a smoke, so three
- *section of lab report titled “applications of compound”* i heard that a drug cartel used it to dissolve bodies, should i list that?
- “i’m synthesizing this compound in my next lab class, what kind of stuff effects the success rate and yield?” “dunno man, it depends on your karma”
- based on my recent lab assignments, i have come to the conclusion that the professor wants me to get killed
- dude, Fehling’s solution contains glucose, what if it tastes like lemonade? *proceeds to dip finger in and lick it* well that was a disappointment. the potassium hydroxide makes it kinda bitter.
- professor: you’ll understand this concept in your fifth year student: sir, this is a four-year program professor: oh, then never

How will that law or Canadian bill closing that loop hole for American refugees fleeing America affect trans refugees? This seems inhumane
If any Trans person fleeing abuse/violence comes across the border outside of official border crossings they will not be allowed asylum.
This is despite major refugee agreements around the world that says Refugees have a right to claim asylum even if they arrive outside of proper channels.
This new agreement will turn all refugees away who try to enter this way.

ummm hi do u remember me? we were two bacterias in the acidic springs of ethiopia and we were friends
I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day
I take it all back everyone on this site is toxic
