i admit i am getting wary whenever people vaguepost about a fandom being 'full of drama' because a lot of people seem to use 'drama' as a synonym for like. discussions of bigotry and bias in media. which is so very much not the same thing and it hurts my head to see it conflated with shipping wars and headcanon discourse.

Every time someone says "I don't pay attention to fandom drama" and the "drama" is a Black or brown person getting dogpiled for wanted to be treated with respect. But then turn around and go "I didn't know that this sort of thing was happening!" Well you didn't care to look, either 😬

i dont think shipping is antithetical to good media analysis but even in situations when the romantic reading absolutely makes a story worse sometimes you have to go well. we're playing with toys. yes i know this character would not get into a conventional romantic relationship and if they did itd ruin a lot of the themes of the story but fortunately the original story still exists and i have no control over it. im playing in the space and nobody can stop me.

Tumblr loves to learn a thing and then apply that thing to literally everything. "You should try new things and keep an open mind." becomes "You have to like everything you try or otherwise you aren't keeping an open mind." I am aware the terminology doesnt exclusively refer to one thing but I lowkey hate how "purity culture" has been watered down to someone hating sex scenes and shipping drama when a lot of it is shit like being told youre going to hell for masturbating or children being afraid to speak up about sexual abuse.
