vivienne’s family was always messy . even the good times were messy . the parikhs lived in vancouver for most of vivienne’s childhood . aashka owned a successful psychiatry practice , and manish was a meterologist for the biggest news channel in the area . viv looks back on her early childhood as being pretty idyllic , but the reality of the situation was very different . she and her younger siblings were not privy to the tension their parents had : in an attempt to shield their children , they would frequently wait until the kids had all fallen asleep before arguing . however , the discord between the two continued to build until the dam finally broke . when vivienne was twelve years old , aashka and manish sat the family down to break the news : they were getting a divorce .
naturally , vivienne’s world seemed to collapse around her . having not had any idea that anything was wrong between her parents , the news of their impending divorce was a shock to say the least . within the span of six months , her life was unrecognizable . aashka was granted sole custody of the kids . since she wasn’t a canadian citizen , she headed home to america . aashka packed up her three daughters and moved them to the bay area in california , not far from where aashka grew up . it was probably the worst decision she could have made , as the two huge life transitions lead to a lot of instability within the family . vivienne started slacking in school , skipping classes often to spend time with friends and smoke , mouthing off & getting in trouble ( mild trouble , but trouble nonetheless ) . meanwhile , manish’s calls became more and more infrequent . by the time vivienne turned 16 , he stopped calling entirely . after she snooped to find his facebook , she learned that her father had remarried and started a new family with one of the news anchors at work . none of his daughters were invited to the wedding .
throughout vivienne’s high school years , aashka worked an incredible amount and had a very full social life ( including dating , of course ) . she found herself living the life she never had with manish : the two had gotten married and had vivienne before they were even 20 , so she felt as though her youth had been taken away from her . as aashka moved forward with her own life , chasing her own opportunities , vivienne found herself the ‘ default parent ’ for the younger girls . all the softball games , theater performances , student teacher conferences .... vivienne was present at all of them . after she ( barely ) graduated high school , she was hesitant to fly the nest and leave her sisters alone with their mother , who seemed to have grown to resent the three of them more the older they got . so she stayed in her mother’s house , helping taking care of the kids . she worked many different part time jobs , quitting every couple of months when she ultimately got bored . she also began to moonlight as a drug dealer to put a little more money in her pocket in hopes of moving somewhere far away once her sisters were old enough to take care of themselves .
however , things changed when vivienne was 19 . on the way home from a date one night , aashka and her current fling were struck by a drunk driver . both were killed instantly . that phone call shifted vivienne’s world completely . suddenly , her sisters truly were her responsibility . their father refused to take over custody of them ( it would have disrupted his new life with his new family ) , not that viv would have let him take them away from her anyway . with the sizable life insurance money and inheritance she received , vivienne was fairly set monetarily to care for her sisters until they were old enough to take care of theirselves . luckily , their own inheritances were enough to take care of their college tuitions if they chose to go . after leveling with them and discussing options , the girls ultimately decided to sell the home they were currently living in and move somewhere quieter : which is how the three of them ended up in moorbrooke .
honestly , though she would never admit it , aashka’s death was a weight off of vivienne’s shoulders . she loved her mother , yes , but her irresponsibility and the questionable men she would bring around the girls were no longer an issue . viv really stepped into her role as a caretaker for her sisters : they were really the only thing she truly cared about . she started working full time at delia’s shortly after the move , and hit it off with the owner . she quickly began shaping viv to take over for her , and when she decided to retire six years ago vivienne was prepared to purchase the cafe from her . she loves her work and her business , but her sisters are still the most important thing to her .
vivienne is a little rough around the edges , but she’s honest & a loyal friend . she was a rebel before she had to grow up too fast , and a lot of that is still evident in her personality despite the fact she’s on the straight - and - narrow now . she can come off a bit grumpy , but she means well and is not usually an instigator . however she is more than happy to match energy , and has zero tolerance for disrespect ( towards herself or the people she is close to -- she has tossed people out of the cafe for being rude to her employees ) .
as for hobbies and interests , vivienne has played hockey since she was a child . it was one of the only things in her life that was hers and hers alone . she had started out as a figure skater , but found that hockey was an excellent way to channel her anger issues . she plays on right wing on a team for a local league . vivienne also plays the guitar , and would join a band if the opportunity ever arose . as of now , she’s released a couple of songs under a pseudonym , but this isn’t information she has really shared with anyone . one of the songs went a bit viral , which was exciting , but she feels a bit anxious about continuing on and releasing more . she’s not sure she’s interested in pursuing a career in music , and doesn’t want it to become a burden or a stressor . she also loves to cook , and will sometimes use her favorite employees and regulars as guinea pigs for new dishes . she’s secretly a softie despite how she tries to seem , and will go above and beyond for people she deems worthy of it .
