ARTIST STATEMENT SCULPTURE rough :
Project 1: The Body, Identity and The Self
TITLE: MESSAGES FROM THE MARGINS 2016 The impact of social media, social networking and the proliferation of instantaneous, context-free imagery has influenced the way we âreadâ images. Â Internet sites that include blogs, Instagrams and âclick baitâ advertising to name a few demand quick-look rapid-response viewing patterns that are in direct opposition to the slow meditative considerations traditionally associated with art.
This body of work seeks to juxtapose the materials and processes of traditional craft-making to contemporary subject matter and patterns of association in order to challenge and extend the canon of art. Within each banner an implied narrative is suggested by the images, and in others by the imagesâ relationships to text. Crafted out of canvas drop sheets, embroidery, and felt, the DIY-type objects toy with the viewer by blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture and craft, resulting in a series of hybrid forms that evade categorisation.
The most influential works for this series include Mike Kelleys silk banner series Pansy Metal/Clovered Hoof 1989 that were initially intended for costumes in a performance piece. These images follow Kelleys signature antiestablishment style.
âPansy Metal/Clovered Hoof appears almost like crude doodles that one would find in the margins of a high school notebook, desk or bathroom wall. However, here they are enlarged to the size of banners like one would see hanging in a gymnasium, as if the outsiders in school decided to showcase the iconography that symbolized their counter culture.â
Similarly, I have chosen marginal characters and marginal statements from âmarginalâ advertising such as clickbait and have upscaled them to celebratory scale, and by so doing have focused full attention on the subliminal messages that exist everywhere in the contemporary world. Â
Another key influence to my practice has been Judy Chicagoâs entrance banners to The Dinner Party, 1979. Chicagoâs historical reclamation of womenâs craft skills as important vehicles for making artistic statements remains valid today.  As technological imagery becomes more prevalent, the slower processes of handiwork such as stitching, embroidery and quilting carry with them an awareness of the value of work and the handmade. However, in my research it occurred to me that many artists who work using material mediums, particularly stitching and embroidery, donât make the the works themselves. The reasoning behind  this would have to do with the time-consuming process it requires. In this series the âmakingâ of the work was integral for me, as I remain committed to a hands -on approach as I believe it gives me a stronger connection the the work I produce.
READINGS THAT HAVE INFORMED MY WORK: Craft and contemporary theory By Sue Rowley âCraft became the primary instance of the not- modern, the anachronistic. The overwhelming success of mass production consumption modernity in the early and mid-twentieth century left craft as the obvious signifier of modernityâs opposite a tradition.â
What is the relationship between art, craft and design? Where does craft sit in the museum? This innovative interdisciplinary collection explores cultural perceptions of craft and their impact on contemporary practice.

Haitian Voodoo flags
Haitian âVoodoo Flags are used in ceremonies and their bright embellished surface with images of voodoo symbols are said to summon and bring forth the spirits they are calling upon during the ceremony. The flags are crafted by the Voodoo priests of Haiti who sew the thousands of beads onto the cloth. These mesmerising flags are simultaneously horrifying and seductive. IMAGES BELOW

âGRAN BOISâ
âVoodoo Flags, or drapeaux were meant for Haitian Voodoo ceremonies in which the bright sequins and voodoo symbols would summon, or bring forth spirits called upon to join a ceremony. Voodoo Flags are made by Voodoo Priests of Haiti who draw Voodoo symbols and imagery onto cloth and who then sew hundreds and even thousands of the beads onto the cloth. The drapeaux in the collection of the Haitian Arts Collective  were all bought directly from notable Voodoo priests in Port-au-Prince or Jacmel, Haiti during the mid 1980âs.â
Thanks to @othmeralia we learned that today is Appreciate a Dragon Day and we couldnât resist sharing one of our favorite dragon themed artifacts! This is a Voodoo flag featuring a winged dragon that was originally designed by Haitian artist Ti Jean, but elaborately beaded and interpreted by Haitian flag artist Roudy Azor. Voodoo flags are traditionally the work of practicing priests and their followers. The flags are displayed in Voodoo sanctuaries and are carried at the beginning of ceremonies.Â

DIARY ENTRY CLICK BAIT
For this series I'm planning to incorporate text. Automatically the text creates an  implied  narrative that suggests rational connections between the various aspects of the imagery, however in selecting particular text I deliberately choose statements that will puzzle the viewer and cause them to question wether the text and imagery are related. Click bait otherwise known as pop up ads or sponsored content are common on the internet and become intertwined in our everyday âinternetâ lives appearing on web pages wether you like them or not. I find lots of them humorous and thought the hilarious alluring statements such as âeat this and never diet againâ (with a lychee pictured) needed to be used.  I HAVE PICTURED EXAMPLES BELOWÂ
