50 Years since The Soweto Uprising

On the 16th June 1976 high school students in the Soweto Township staged a protest against new education laws implemented by the government. What began as a peaceful walkout of lessons resulted in one of the most significant moments during resistance against apartheid.

The uprising is often credited for the resurgence of the international anti -apartheid movement as well as creating the groundwork for the next two decades of protests styles in South Africa. Protests across the country took place in response with workers strikes and university students protesting the killing of children.

Most of the victims shot by the police on this day in would only be in their 60s today. One of the most known victims was Hector Pieterson. He was just 12 years old. Today he’d be 62. Events like this have happened within living memory. We can’t let them be forgotten.
