Das 1967 vorgestellte Mifa Klapprad folgte dem damaligen Trend hin zu diesem Fahrradtypus. Es sollte jedoch vordergründig dem Zweck dienen, der Unterversorgung mit Fahrrädern zu begegnen. Die Produktion in großen Stückzahlen wurde vom damaligen Gemeraldirektor des VVB Automobilbau Dr. Winfried Sonntag genehmigt, um das so genannte “Fahrradproblem” zu lösen. Tatsächlich wurden bis 1990 rund 2,8 Millionen “Klappis” verkauft – im Gegensatz zu anderen Fahrradmodellen war es immer erhältlich. Die zunächst einzige Variante war das Modell 901, welches mit Keil- oder Glockentretlager geliefert werden konnte. Vermutlich 1976 wurde diese Ausführung durch neue bzw. weitere Ausstattungsvarianten ersetzt. In der zweiten Hälfte der 1980er Jahre war nur noch das Modell 903 im Sortiment verblieben, die Produktion von Klapprädern war zugunsten anderer Typen gedrosselt worden. . Allgemeines zu Mifa: Der auf eine Gründung aus dem Jahr 1907 zurückgehende Betrieb erreichte in den 1920er Jahren große Bekanntheit über Erfolge im Radrennsport. Während der beiden Weltkriege stellte das Unternehmen jeweils vollständig von Fahrrädern auf Rüstungsgüter um. . Nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde der Bau von Fahrrädern durch die Fahrradwerke Mifa der Sowjetischen Aktiengesellschaft „Awtowelo“ wieder aufgenommen, aus der 1950 die VEB MIFA-Werk Sangerhausen hervorging. . Ab Gründung der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik bis zur Übernahme durch die Treuhandanstalt im Jahr 1990 wurden mehr als 9 Millionen Fahrräder ausgeliefert, davon etwa 1,5 Mio. der umgangssprachlich „Trabi auf 2 Rädern“ oder „Volksräder“ genannten Klappräder.
