There are two types of writers:
1. 'It's fiction, it doesn't need to make sense!'
2. 'I didn't account for the rotation of the planet and how that affects the constalations while my characters stargazed at different times of year, I have failed as a writer, and this entire thing is trash'
This is a whole mood đ
The truth is outâand now? Can trust be rebuilt, or will years of lies and secrets tear everything apart? Will there be a Golden Age, or will Camelot sink into chaos? What are the repercussions of the big reveal?

âyouâre a writer, can you explain your process?â yes. first, i panic. then i procrastinate. then, in a fit of productivity at 3 a.m., i create chaos.
This isâŚremarkably accurate đ
The truth comes outâand things go terribly. Perhaps Arthur doesn't take the news well and draws his sword. Perhaps Uther finds out and Merlin is strapped to the pyre. Perhaps Merlin has to escape from Camelot and leave all he loves behind. Can there be a happy ending? A hopeful one? Or will things forever fall apart?

The truth comes outâand Merlin doesn't end up on the pyre! Perhaps there is anger, a heated conversation or some temporary distrust, but ultimately all goes well. Perhaps we even get a glimpse of what a Golden Age might look like?

The patron
The alien came to the library again, shortly before closing time, and quickly found a book.
"May this entity borrow The Complete History of Knitting?"
They always return the book they borrow after five minutes, but the ritual of checking it out seems important to them.Â
"Of course. Did you bring your card?"
I looked them up, after the first time I saw them for real. They first registered with us over ninety years ago. The senior librarian who first told me about them said I shouldn't stare, or pry.
"Whatever else they are, they are a patron, and should be treated as such," she said. "If they seek knowledge, it is our duty to help them find it."
There isn't an ancient and secret code of librarians, but that is definitely a core part of it. If such a code existed.
I scan the card and the book. "There you go," I say and hand them over. "Please return it within two weeks."
They tilt their head. "This entity will honour your terms."
"Oh! That reminds me, we have updated the terms since your last visit." I hand them the pamphlet we got from the printers last week. "It's mostly about internet usage, but I'll need you to read them and agree."
They study the pamphlet.
"These are terms this entity can abide by." They pause. "Is there no requirement to keep your existence secret?"
"Of course not," I say, "we always welcome new patrons."
They stand silent, long enough for me to realise the implications of what I have just said.Â
"This entity had made an assumption, based on prior experiences on countless worlds, where knowledge is always closely guarded and costly to obtain" they say at last. "You will provide knowledge for free to all who seek it?"
In my mind, I weigh humanity's ignorance of those countless worlds of alien civilisations against the code.
"Yes," I say, "this is a library."
This is wonderful. đŤđâ¤ď¸

Written for World Poetry Day, March 21, 2018. When I had this idea earlier today, I thought it was the worst, most faux hip pretentious idea for a shallow demonstration of empty wordsmithing skill in poetry ever. So I had to try to write it. I mean, how often do you get to fuse the iambic dimeter of bredlik - one of the newest and most exciting verse forms - with the stately iambic pentameter of the classic sonnet?

I was too late to the poll, but approx 8âŚ
Definitely 7 - English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Welsh, Russian.
Also possibly Japanese? But itâs been so long since I learned it that I donât know if Iâm right, and I never learned to write it. đ So maybe 8.
The real frustration is that I should know this for Korean since Iâm pretty sure it was the word I used most often when I lived there briefly. However, I havenât used it in nearly a decade, and itâs depressing to discover that I absolutely cannot dredge it up on command anymore. đ So Iâm going with âmaybe 8,â and as soon as I post this, Iâm going to go look it up so that it stops eating at me. đ¤Śââď¸

Merlin Bingo 2024 adopted prompt: âscience fiction/fantasyâ
Context:
When Albionâs greatest need arrives in the form of an alien invasion, the reincarnated figures of legend must deal with the consequences of their shared past even as they fight for humanityâs future.
Arthur ascends to the British throne after the invasion begins, and he works closely with the team of experts who are trying to determine why the only offensive weapons that have been effective so far against the reptilian aliens are medieval swords. Gwen is a museum curator specializing in medieval weaponry, and Merlin is a paleontologist at the same eclectic museum. Elyan studies materials science and has been called in to assist Gwen and Merlin with their research. They have a status update for ArthurâŚ
âThereâs something strange about these swords,â Gwen said, glancing at Elyan. âWeâd never noticed it before, but once we started lookingâŚâ
Elyan picked up the story. âAt first, we thought it was something in the iron itselfâlike an unusual isotope or somethingâso we ran a spectrometer analysis on a sample.â
Gwen nodded. âWe were half-right. Turns out there is something in the chemical composition of the metal in swords forged in the late 5th to early 13th centuries that isnât in any of our swords from other eras.â
âOr anywhere else on earth, as far as cutting edge chemists know,â Elyan added.
âSo, for those of us who didnât do A-level chemistryâŚ?â Arthur prompted.
âIt means,â Elyan said, grinning like a kid at Christmas, âthat we found another element in thereâan element that was previously undiscovered.â
Gwen nodded eagerly. âAnd itâs in all of our swords from that era, or nearly all. There are only a few that donât have it, but theyâre fragmented and terribly deteriorated, far more so than the rest. Interestingly, it doesnât matter whether theyâre katanas or arming swords; if theyâre from that era and in even half-decent condition, then they all have that same element, no matter where in the world they were forged.â
âA new element?â Arthur repeated slowly, trying and failing to dig out a mental image of the periodic table from the recesses of his Year 9 memories.
âYep! Element 120,â Elyan said. âWe might even get to name it!â
Gwenâs eyes crinkled at her brotherâs exuberance as she turned her attention back to Arthur. âWant to know what the best part is?â
âUh, sure.â
âThey found the same element in the bio samples from the aliens you killed.â

This paw-sitively delightful đđđ
(No, I will not apologize for the bad pun đ)
There should be a fanfic writing game called the showrunners challenge where someone writes a story and partway through someone else can play things like "actor leaves after 4000 more words" or "topic now too politically sensitive due to unforeseen world events" or "lost rights to that reference"
I need this to be a real game right the hell now
I do not have the energy do do a full layout right now b/c it is kickstarter season and I am under water, but here's a prototype that can be solo-played (you can also have a friend just pick from the lists if you want that pvp feeling.)
Showrunner's Challenge By Runawaymarbles (also sorta by sprintingowl)
Begin writing a fanfic. It is a feature length television program being watched every week by thousands. There is no plan. The industry is in shambles. The writer's room is barely hanging on.
At the end of each chapter, roll a d12.
1 Everything at once. Roll twice, use both. If you get this again, keep rolling. Your only way out is to stop getting 1s. 2 Product placement! The next chapter must center (and subtly promote the features of) a product belonging to the most recent brand you've seen. 3 Fan favorite. Your most recently mentioned character (or named object) is now beloved by the audience. You must give it a bigger part in the story, a special destiny, or an important new romance or friendship. If you get this twice for the same character or object, the adoration cools and you must go back to treating the character or object normally. 4 Executive meddling. You must change to a different genre. You cannot go back to a genre until you have changed genres three times since then. 5 Audiences are craving more coziness. The next chapter must be completely low stakes and set you at ease. 6 Audiences are craving more suspense. The next chapter must take place entirely in a single location, ideally just a single room, and build tension with every exchange of dialog. 7 Audiences are craving more action. The next chapter needs to involve at least one extended fight scene, and the weapons must be the last three objects mentioned. 8 Audiences are craving more romance. The next chapter needs to involve a deep, sappy confession of either love or admiration between two characters that have not previously been romantically involved. 9 Go to the most recent line in your fic that references a brand. Due to ongoing legal action, that brand cannot be mentioned again, but you score 1 audience point every time you allude to it in a way that paints it in a negative light. 10 The two most recently mentioned characters' actors have, IRL, gone through a VERY messy divorce or friend breakup. You cannot put them in the same scene, but they must both remain relevant parts of the show. If you get this with the same two characters again, they reconcile. 11 The most recent negative event (stabbing, poisoning, banishment to jupiter) is now the center of a very real IRL news story. You must immediately pivot away from all plotlines involving it and, if possible, also find away to apologize for even thinking to include it without breaking character. 12 The most recently mentioned character's actor has decided to leave the show. You must write them out in the next chapter. If you are brave, also roll a d12. 1--6, they were well loved and their sendoff must be as flowery as possible. 7--12, they were despised by the cast and crew. Mulch them.
You win if you can complete the fic in a state of relative coherency.
Alternate Game Mode: TV Digest Version

Fill for my Merlin Bingo 2024 adopted square âAliensâ đ
Hello! For context (if you havenât already heard me ramble about this WIP in one Discord server or another), this is the first half of Chapter 1 of a loooong and not remotely complete WIP, hence sharing it here rather than AO3 or FFN. Itâs a modern-with-magic reincarnation fic.
(TW: graphic violence)
Fic summary:
Arthur Rhydderch had spent years trying to âfind his calling,â as his thesis advisor described it. This wasnât quite what I had in mind, the reincarnated Once and Future King thought as he gave his sword a twirl and launched himself at the alien before it could breathe another blistering spurt of flames.
Up-and-coming paleontologist Dr. Merlin Emrys had thought he was adulting quite well; most days, he even managed to avoid getting yelled at by his landlady. Then secrets from his past life resurfaced, and everything fell apart. Facing an impossible choice, Merlin must come to terms with who he was, who he is, andâmost importantlyâwho he wants to become.
Or:
When Albionâs greatest need arrives in the form of an alien invasion, the reincarnated figures of legend must deal with the consequences of their shared past even as they fight for humanityâs future.
Chapter 1 (excerpt):
Arthur was in the library when the world ended. It was barely 10:00 AM on a Tuesday, and it was shaping up to be one of the worst days of his life even before the sky rained fire.
Six hours ago, Arthur had shaken off the claws of a nightmare for the third night in barely a week. Running, always running, with watering eyes and screaming lungs as the soot threatened to choke him. Four hours ago, heâd paused in the middle of his training run through the city to sit on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and watch with bleary eyes as the pale dawn crept up from the horizon, silhouetting Capitol Hill against the clear autumn sky. His t-shirt stuck to his skin as his sweat cooled. Blood and sweat mingling, trickling down his back as he twisted away from vicious claws that slashed his shoulder from behind. The fresh air hadnât banished the phantom tang of acrid smoke, so heâd dragged himself home and attempted to drown the taste with a fourth cup of caustically strong coffee, nearly scalding his tongue in his haste. Burns blistering on his forearms as he gripped the sword hilt with white knuckles while hissing creatures stalked him from the shadows. The shifting shadows had still dogged his thoughts as heâd headed to an early one-to-one meeting with the head coach of his college soccer team.
