Not to be toxic but when was someone gonna tell me the difference in Miles and Fudd’s point totals so far is almost entirely negated if you disregard points from FTs.
Olivia currently has 370 points to Azzi’s 278, but Olivia has also shot 89/99 FT attempts compared to Azzi’s 12/16 FT attempts.
I’m sorry but after seeing this alongside every other comparison, they really should be getting talked about in the ROTY convo like they’re neck and neck. Like ROTY will almost certainly go to Olivia bc her impact on Minne is just enormous bc of the system and circumstances — and she’s translated so so well in general and deserves it…but like GODDAMN. Put some respect on Azzi’s name. If you step back and watch, or at least just look beyond the surface level stats her impact is crazy too.
Olivia for ROTY sure, awesome. BUT, Azzi is right there with her and should be a lock for All-Defensive Team too.
And yall better go on and vote for Paige and Azzi otherwise no chapter today. Make 5 emails idc there’s no way I’m watching team Boston vs team Clark
can some please help me find a fic I can’t remember if it’s a chapter from somewhere or a one shot all I remember is Paige comes out to her mum and it gos really bad so she leaves and drives all the way to azzis lake house

Author's note: Hi, I hope you enjoy the final part to this series. This is unedited and maybe not my best work but I felt that you all deserved an ending to this series.
Paige has always had a fear of drowning. She read somewhere once that drowning was the most painful way to die. It starts with sheer panic, a feeling of helplessness and desperation. Then comes a burning sensation tearing through your chest, like fire underwater. Then comes the stillness, right before your heart stops and everything goes black.
When she was 5, her mother made her start taking swim lessons at the Castro Heights rec center. She spent the entire time crying and screaming anytime the instructors tried to force her into the pool. Eventually her mother stopped trying, and Paige never stepped near another body of water, so god help her.
Paige has never drowned, but she thinks this might be what it feels like. There was an anvil setting on her chest, and each breath after the other became heavier and heavier. She clawed at her skin, in an attempt to relieve herself from the exponential laceration. She stripped herself of all her clothes until she was completely bare. Only then, she slipped underneath the soft sheets of her bed, pulling them over her head until she was enveloped in darkness. She placed a hand on her bare chest, and another on her diaphragm, following the pace of her breaths until they slowed. Just days ago Paige was lost in Azzi, and now she's suffocating with her absence.
Paige didn't wake up until 3 am that night. She thought maybe she could escape the feeling by losing herself in never-ending sleep, but when she woke, it was as if floodgates were broken down and the pangs of hurt rushed back in. She couldn't tell if she started crying when she woke up, or if she never stopped. Paige brought her fingertips to brush the tears from her eyes, but when she removed her hands they were dry, like all the water in her body had dried up.
It felt different this time. What Josie did hurt, but she wasn't falling in love with Josie.
Paige fumbled around on her nightstand for her phone, the blue light stinging her already raw eyes.
Azzi Fudd: 16 missed calls
Azzi Fudd
Paige please answer my calls
Azzi Fudd
let me explain. It's not what you think I promise.
Paiges finger hovered over the call button, but her hands were shaking too much to press.
She slipped out from under her comforter and put on an old MCR T-shirt and sleep shorts. She tiptoed down the hall and knocked softly on her little brother's bedroom door. When she stepped inside Drew sat up in bed rubbing his eyes sleepily.
"Paigey?" Drew questioned.
"Sorry for waking you. Is it ok if I sleep in here?" Paige asked. She hadn't slept in Drew's bed since the last time she saw her mom. She had thought maybe she would have changed, maybe she wanted to be in her life again, but she left. Just like she always did. Just like most of the people in her life. So she went to the one person she knew she could trust would never leave, her little brother.
Drew nodded, still groggy with sleep as he scooted over to the far edge of his bed to make room for his older sister. Despite their age and size difference, in moments like these Paige felt smaller than she's ever been. She held her breath to try to stop her tears, but they choked out eventually.
"Don't cry Paigey" Drew said as he stroked her hair.
Paige sniffled and squeezed her eyes shut.
"Everything is gonna be ok Paigey"
---
Azzi had barely slept in 2 days, but the chill of January and the anxiety coursing through her body was keeping her wide awake. She had been sitting outside the back exit of Castro Heights High for the past 36 minutes waiting for a certain blonde to walk out the doors. She had met Paige here at the same time everyday after school, but there was still noting of her.
The last few nights Azzi had lay awake alternating between attempting and failing to call Paige, and brainstorming all the ways in which she had messed up. Questioning why she couldn't just stand up to Josie, why she even decided to honor a friendship that was never reciprocated. But most of all, how she had promised Paige she wouldn't hurt her, but she ended up doing the one thing she feared most.
Now, sitting outside in the cold waiting for Paige, she wasn't sure what she was going to say, but she couldn't spend a minute longer without talking to her. Just before she decided to give up, the back door swung open. Azzi held her breath in anticipation, but instead of Paige, her eyes landed on the last person she wanted to see in that moment.
Josie.
When their eyes met, a brief display of panic flashed on Josie's face, it lasted for less than a second before she twisted her face into a smirk, but Azzi caught it.
"Hey Az, standing out in the cold again?" Josie said with fake smile plastered on her face.
"You really have some nerve, even coming over here Josie" Azzi spat, clenching her fists to hold herself back from launching herself at the girl in front of her.
Josie rolled her eyes and laughed. "Oh please Azzi, you should be thanking me. You were about to throw everything about your life away just to associate with the town creep."
"and whose fault is that!" Azzi yelled.
Josie stepped back, not expecting Azzi to stand up to her.
"Yeah Josie. I know you lied about what happened with Paige last summer. I know you made all of that up just because of whatever homophobic bullshit you believe in." Azzi was heavy breathing by the time all of the words came out of her mouth.
Both girls stood there in shock. Neither one of them was used to Azzi shutting Josie down. It was a disruption to the order that their friendship had always followed: Josie commands, Azzi follows, but losing Paige made her realize she couldn’t bear to follow any more of Josies orders, she had to turn them down.
“Wake up Josie, my world doesn’t revolve around you anymore.” She took a breath “Now for the love of god, did you see Paige leave?”
Josie hesitated for a second, contemplating whether or not to speak, but the look on Azzi’s face made her realize the girl was not backing down anytime soon.
“No i didn’t.”
Azzi began to walk away,
“B-but her little brother, he’s in the same class as my cousin, they just got let out”
Before she could say another word, Azzi shouldered past her and towards the recess area.
———
“Drew!” Azzi shouted when she spotted the mop of curly brown hair that belonged to the little boy.
Drew whipped his head around to search for whatever voice was beckoning him, his two front teeth sticking out from his smile, but as soon as he saw who had been calling his name, his face dropped. He tightened the straps on his backpack and began speed walking away from the girl.
“Drew wait!” Azzi yelled as she caught up to him.
Drew looked up at her with furrowed brows. “You said you wouldn’t hurt Paigey. You lied” he said sternly.
Azzi felt a stab to her heart from his words. “I know I hurt your sister, but Drew I swear I didn’t mean to, I would never try to hurt her on purpose.”
Drew looked back up at her, his expression still hardened. “How do I know you’re not lying again”
Azzi looked at the little boy directly in the eyes. It pained her to see how much not only she had hurt Paige, but how she had hurt Drew as well. He was innocent collateral that came down with her.
“Drew I promise I never wanted to hurt Paige. I- I love her. And there nothing I want more than to make it up to her. But I need your help” she let out.
After taking a moment to let her words sink in, Drew finally responded, For such a little kid her sure did have a lot of emotional intelligence.
“Ok, but you have to pinky promise you won't hurt Paigey again" He said sticking his pinky finger out towards Azzi.
She linked her pinky with Drew's and looked him in the eye "I promise".
He nodded at the words, his guard lowering halfway.
"Okay. I just need you to help me get Paige to meet me in crow's woods by the creek tomorrow afternoon. Can you do that?" asked Azzi.
Drew nodded "Yeah. I can do that"
Azzi placed her hands on either of the little boy's shoulders "Thank you Drew" she said before turning to walk away.
Before she was completely out of earshot Drew yelled "Azzi!"
She turned around "yeah?"
"Don't forget our promise"
------
The air was cold, but not to the bone like it got in the depths of winter in Castro valley. The sun reflected off of the snow blanket that covered the ground creating a subtle warmth.
"Drew I'm really not in the mood to fight with you, but if you don't tell me where we are going in the next five minutes I'm gonna get mad" Paige shouted out towards her younger brother.
Drew was half walking, half skipping through the woods, his arms bouncing in his winter coat that was a size too big.
"Just a little bit further Paigey!" Drew shouted back at her, hoping that if he just kept his eyes forward his sister would follow without question.
Paige wasn't sure why she agreed to this idea of Drew's. Well actually she couldn't bare the idea of telling her dad that she had her heart broken by the best friend of the girl who had made her life a living hell, so when Drew brought up going to Crow's woods after school, and her dad insisted it was good for her to get out of the house, she had simply agreed. Now she regrets not just facing the shame of her dad instead of being stuck in the woods with her hyperactive younger brother.
Drew's pace started to slow as they approached a small creek. Paige's stomach fell. She hadn't been back her since the last time she was with Azzi. "Drew I want to go home" she panicked.
"Just a little bit further" He said, and tugged her hand around the bend of a large oak tree.
"Drew seriously--" She was stopped in the middle of her sentence by the sight surrounding her. There were strings of photographs hanging from every branch she could see, creating a sort of cocoon in the small patch of woods. Intertwined withe each string of photographs was cascading fairy lights, glowing slightly under the shade of the trees.
As she stepped closer, she was able to see each individual photograph more clearly. The first one she laid her eyes on was a picture of herself in a white cable knit sweater, her hand stretched out in front of her in a lame attempt to cover the lens. Her smile was bright and soft, glowing from the soft light that filtered through the blinds in her room. The next one was a picture of her, brow furrowed, knees pulled to her chest and hand gripping her sketchbook in deep focus, another was Paige sleeping, head rested on tanned legs, her blonde hair splayed out, and her mouth slightly agape.
Paige took a deep breath as she took in all of the pictures surrounding her. Each one was a picture Azzi had taken. Some she remembered, some she didn't even know existed, but they all captured Paige in the same light: peaceful, safe, warm.
She let her gaze drift to a small stone where snow had been brushed from atop. There was a cream envelope sitting on top of it, addressed to her in cursive.
To Paige,
I know that we haven’t been speaking lately, but my heart aches for you every day we are apart. I have been thinking of you every day until my chest hurts.
I won’t continue in how much it has hurt to have lost you, because I am stuck in a conversation loop of what it has felt like to have you in my arms. I love you more than I think I have felt alive. I was scared to say it out loud because I was scared of what other people would think of us, but I care more about losing you than what other people think. I know we aren't speaking right now but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't at least try to get you back. If any part of you feels the same, please let me explain. I love you.
-- A
Paige brought her shaky hands to wipe the already frosted tears from her cheeks. Before she could drag her eyes to the top of the page again, Azzi appeared from behind a pine tree. Her curls were tucked into her scarf, and her cheeks were a dusty pink color, clearly from facing a long period of time in the cold.
Azzi took a deep breath as she stepped closer. "Paige", she said, voice cracking between each vowel.
The two girls stood face to face, the tips of their noses centimeters apart. Azzi brought her fingers to Paige's cheeks, her thumbs sliding away the small sheets of icy tears from her freckles.
Azzi parted her lips to speak, but before she could muster up another breathless attempt, she felt Paige's lips press into her own. For a brief moment, their chapped skin stuck to one another, frozen at the seam and fusing oneself to another. But just as quickly as each of their mouths moved, perfectly slotted into each other, it melted to an all-enveloping warmth.
For the first time in a while, Paige felt her head above the surface.
---------
"wait" Azzi pulled away, out of breath.
"As much as I want to keep kissing you, you deserve to hear the truth." She said.
Paige nodded her head softly, her eyes darting off to the corner. Azzi tugged her hand gently to sit down on the tree stump a few feet from where they stood.
"I know it's hard to trust me right now, but I promise I wouldn't be here if I didn't mean it" Azzi spoke softly.
She took a deep breath before continuing. "That day in the cafeteria with Josie, she-- she was never meant to see the sketches, I never should have even been sitting there in the first place" She felt Paige wince at the reminder of the memory and her heart almost broke into a million pieces all over again.
"That day, I never should have even sat with them, but I ran into Josie, and well, you know how she is"
She did know how Josie was.
"She somehow convinced me that I owed it to her to be there. And I let her manipulate me. When she saw the sketches, it was like she struck gold in her plan." Azzi continued.
"I should've known better, I should've stood up to her right there and then, but i was dumb and naive. And Paige I'm so sorry" Azzi finished, her throat raw from holding back tears.
Azzi took Paige's hands in hers and brought her eyes to look directly at the girl. "Paige I need you to know that I would never hurt you on purpose. And I swear, if you let me, I will never stop trying to make up for it."
Paige wanted to let herself believe Azzi's words, but the part of her that had been hurt so many times before was holding her back. Before she could imprison her own mind further, her gaze drifted past the girl in front of her and to the strings of photographs behind them. Each one was vulnerable in their own way. It reminded Paige of the moments that were just her and Azzi, none of the outside noise that made her want to pull it all apart and hide.
She took a breath. Her fear didn't completely dissolve but she thought maybe even if she got hurt again, it would be worth it to have Azzi in her life.
"i really missed you" Paige whispered after while.
Azzi wrapped herself around the blonde, breathing in her scent, her face nuzzled into the crook of her neck.
"Me too Paige. You have no idea"
----
"Drew you are doing a terrible job" mumbled an annoyed Paige as she watched herself in the mirror.
Paige was sitting on a swivel chair wearing a three piece nevy suit, while her little brother attempted and failed to fasten a bowtie to her collar. She never imagined herself getting ready to go to high school prom, but then again, she had never imagined herself dating Azzi Fudd, so here we are.
"I swear dad did it exactly like this last time, and it came out perfec,t" said Drew.
Paige began to tug on the ends of the tie, loosening it from her neck. Much to her relief, her door creaked open and her dad stepped in.
'What's going on in here with you knuckleheads?" her dad teased as he wrapped his arm around Drew, ruffling his hair.
"I think you should take over dad, Paigey is one bad knot away from kicking me out" the little boy said as he flopped on to his sisters bed.
Bob took the bowtie from his daughter's hands and began carefully starting over Drew's mess. Paige stayed quiet but offered a small smile at her dad's help.
"What time does your date get here?" Bob said as he pulled the fabric through the last loop and straightened the bow on her neck.
"Please don't hate her dad," Paige said as she lowered her head to point at the floor.
Bob lifted her chin before speaking. ''i don't hate her kiddo, I just hate to see you hurt." The sincerity in his eyes said more than his words.
"Azzi won't hurt me dad, I promise," said Paige
Bob nodded softly. "I trust you Paige" he said before embracing her in a hug.
"hey you get in here too dummy" said Paige as she extended her arm to wrap Drew into their family embrace.
Just as they pulled apart, the doorbell echoed through the house.
"AZZI" yelled Drew and bounded down the stairs. He pulled open the front door of the Bueckers' house to reveal Azzi standing in the frame, wearing a long golden dress covered with a layer of sparkles. The sweetheart neckline ended just above her chest, while mesh covered the rest of her collarbones, the sparkles continuing to her shoulders. Her hair was parted three-quarters down the crown of her head and slicked back into a bun. A soft pink rushed to her cheeks when she made eye contact with her girlfriend, and she couldn't help but look away from nervousness.
"you look gorgeous, Az." said Paige, stepping closer to the girl in front of her.
"So do you P. You're really beautiful you know." said Azzi as she smoothed down the lapel of her suit.
Paige felt a familiar warmth spread throughout her chest. Sometimes when she looks at Azzi, it's like the rest of the world vanishes, and just for a moment, nothing else matters.
"well don't you two clean up well. Azzi do your parents want to come in to take pictures?" said Bob.
Paige, noticing the subtle shift in emotion from Azzi squeezed her hand gently. It wasn't Bob's fault, he didn't know that her parents couldn't even be bothered to give her a ride, let alone accept the fact that she has a girlfriend.
"They're a little camera shy, but we'll have to get you in one Mr. Bueckers." Azzi joked.
"Alright, well, we'd better get started then, Drew can be a bossy photographer," said Bob, and guided them all to the front porch.
----
Paige and Azzi were parked in the far corner of the parking lot, of the highschool. Their hands wrapped around eachother tightly and their mouths kissing ferverously into one another. Azzi's grip on the lapels of Paige's suit jacket, and her tongue slipped further between her lips, letting out a sigh at the sensation. Paige's hands gripped Azzi's waist like it was her life force. The blonde moved her mouth down her girlfriend's neck and sucked right below her pulse point.
"Paige wait" Azzi whispered, her voice still shaky.
"hmm?" said Paige as she looked up, her pupils dilated and glassy.
Azzi touched her cheek gently. "As much as I am enjoying this, we probably should go inside before the whole thing is over?"
Paige groaned. "I guess you're right," she said in response.
"You know, you don't have to do this Az. You don't have to go in there with me in front of everyone," said Paige. Partly because she didn't want Azzi to feel pressure to take on the judgment of their peers, but also because a small part of her was scared of getting hurt again. As much as she tried to fight the feeling, there was a lingering feeling that all of this was too good to be true, that on the other side of those doors, Azzi eould leave her.
"Hey" said Azzi as she touched Paige's cheek. "I know I don't have to do anything. But I want to be with you Paige. And I don't care what anyone thinks." she finished.
Paige let a small smile creep onto her face "alright, well, let's hurry up then"
----
When the two girls finally walked through the doors, they were prepared to be greeted with the eyes of their entire Senior class, but much to their surprise, the sea of people was directing their attention completely to their class president, who was holding a microphone on stage.
"Thank you all for coming tonight! And a huge thank you to our student government for planning this amazing event. I hope you are all having fun! Now we are going to announce your Castro Valley High Prom King and Queen."
The crowd whispered and mumbled in anticipation.
"Your Castro high prom king is... Blake Holloway" the crowd erupted into cheers.
Azzi rolled her eyes at the announcement. "Maybe we should just ditch this thing" she said.
"And your Castro high prom queen is... Azzi Fudd!" said the announcer, and all eyes turned to search the crowd for the girl.
Azzi looked to Paige before hesitatingly making her way through the crowd. When she reached the stage her heart was beating out of her chest.
"Congratulations Blake and Azzi, now lets welcome our king and queen to their first dance." said the announcer.
Blake reached out a hand to Azzi to guide her to the floor, but Azzi turned towards the announcer instead, gesturing for her mic.
"Um hi everyone." she started into the mic, her nerves evident in her voice. "Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I know this is supposed to be a prom king and queen dance but I was hoping to invite someone else up here with me." she continued.
Whispers and confused looks spread on the faces of students in the crowd, but Azzi continued on.
"I know you probably have heard a lot of rumors about people at this school, and it might be easy to believe they are true. But I encourage you all to not let rumors based on hatred or differences lead your truth. I want to ask someone special join me for this dance, you probably don't know her very well, but she is the best person I know. I have never met someone more kind or caring or selfless in my life, and I don't want to hide her from the world anymore."
Azzi took a deep breath. "Paige, will you come dance with me" she asked.
Paiges heart beat out of her chest. She rubbed her hands on the sides of her suit pants, attempting to calm her nerves. Every instinct in her body told her to turn around and run out the doors, but when her eyes locked onto Azzi's on stage, everything else faded away. She didn't have to be afraid anymore, no matter what anyone else thought, Azzi saw her for who she really was.
The crowd parted as the two girls met on the dance floor. They both walked slowly towards eachother untul they were face to face. Azzi picked up the crown from her head and placed it on the girl standing in front of her.
"hi" said Paige.
Azzi smiled. "Paige, may I have this dance?" she asked as she held her hand out.
"yes" said Paige as she took Azzi's hand into her own.

Azzi laid on a bed of damp leaves, the smell of soil circled her lungs with each inhale and the dew in the air thickened with her breath. Her fingernails were caked with dirt, she was shivering, the cold air chilling deep enough to feel it in her bones. Her eyelids fluttered open only to be blinded by white light filtering through the trees speckling the ground around her. As she attempted to take a deep breath in she became painfully aware of the increasing pressure on her chest, a mess of thick vines and tree roots caging her in, hooking her flesh to the ground. She twisted in attempt to free herself from the vegetative prison, but the more she struggled the tighter it pulled her in, her breaths becoming heavier as her body was lowered into the earth. She wanted to scream, to fight back, but all she could feel was herself choking on dirt. As she felt herself getting pulled further and further into the ground she surrendered, accepting her fate taking one last deep breath until all she could see was black.
Azzi awoke in a gasp, the pressure on her chest still weighing revealed itself as the pale bicep of the sleeping girl next to her. She thinks she should be panicking with the realization of what had transpired the night prior, but all that she felt coursing through her body was an innate stillness. It felt calm, like a warm blanket draped over their bodies.
Azzi's gaze drifted to the sleeping girl next to her. A mess of blonde hair was splayed across purple bedsheets. The slow rise and fall of her chest was in time with Azzi's heartbeat. Azzi's traced her face with her eyes, she started from her golden eyelashes, twitching slightly with her breaths, then down the slope of her nose, finally landing on the pink of her lips the center slightly wet in the middle. Every one of her features was soft and it made Azzi's chest ache with nostalgia for the very thing she had in this moment.
As if Azzi's gaze summoned her, Paige awoke from her sleep, her blue eyes meeting brown. Unlike Azzi, she felt a panic crawl up her throat as her body became conscious with her mind. She began to pull her arm from around the other girl with swiftness, but Azzi placed her atop of Paige's and interlaced their fingers.
"Hi" Azzi said softly.
"Hi" Paige responded. The anxiety exiting her body slowly.
"Your eyes twitch when you sleep" whispered Azzi.
"I heard that happens when you share a bed with pretty girls" Paige said with a sleepy grin.
Azzi giggled softly before reaching over and tried to tickle her neck. Paige pushed her hands away and pinched her sides in retaliation, but Azzi swiftly maneuvered herself so that she was straddling her and pinned her wrists down above her head. They were both panting by the time they settled. Their laughs transformed into heavy breaths, and before she could second guess herself, Azzi leaned down and kissed her. Their lips moved in tandem, embracing each other with their tongues. Paiges hands slipped from the grip of Azzi's hands to settle around her waist pulling her closer as she deepened the kiss.
When they finally pulled apart, breathless and shaky, Azzi brushed a blonde strand behind her her ear. "I guess I should probably sneak out of here, before your dad catches me" she laughed.
"Nah, the least I can do is make you breakfast" Paige smiled.
---
Once the two girls made it down the stairs, reality set in. Paige had snuck out in the middle of the night, had a girl over without her dad’s permission, and slept in the same bed not even for a second thinking about shutting the door.
“Morning Paige” Bob beamed, flipping pancakes on the griddle. “…and Azzi”
“i didn’t realize you spent the night” his voice attempting to mask the glare he sent towards his daughter, a silent “I’ll deal with you later” kind of glare.
“Azzi um, needed a place to crash last night so I invited her here” Paige said, trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m so sorry for intruding Mr. Bueckers, I’m happy to see myself out now.” Azzi tried to diffuse her presence.
“Nonsense. You’re always welcome here. You like pancakes?” Bob urged. despite his qualms with his daughter’s lack of transparency, their household remained open to anyone in need. He couldn’t imagine kicking out someone looking for comfort.
A groggy Drew made his way down the stairs, Frankenstein pajamas and a mess of curls atop his head. "Pancakes for breakfast!!" the little boy cheered as he ran through the kitchen and grabbed a pancake from the warming stack on the counter. "Azzi I didn't know you were coming for breakfast too!" he said through a mouthful of pancakes.
"Hey Drew" Azzi laughed as the little boy ran to embrace her in a hug.
"Azzi, are you gonna come take pictures at my game next weekend?" Drew asked eagerly.
Azzi looked to Paige for guidance, unsure how to proceed. Paige only met her look with a smile, a silent encouragement.
Azzi looked to the waiting boy next to her "Only if you promise me another win"
---
"So how much shit are you in with your dad" said Azzi from the other end of the line.
Paige chuckled as she flopped onto her bed. "Well I was gonna be grounded and lose my phone privileges for two weeks, but once I told him you had no where else to go, we compromised on a solid 1 week grounding" Paige said as she picked at a loose thread from her comforter.
"I'm glad you got your punishment reduced, and Paige? I really appreciate it, I'm sorry again." Azzi said, her voice shifting to a more sincere tone.
"You have nothing to apologize for. As long as you're safe"
Azzi only hummed in response, not quite able to shake her guilt.
"Was it always like this with your mom?" Paige asked, a softness in her voice.
Azzi sucked in a breath. It was embarrassing how easy Paige could unravel her. Azzi was usually guarded and private about her personal life. There was no other option really, to most of the outside world Azzi was the perfect girl next door. She was top of her class, captain of the cheer team, and dated the most popular guy in school. Unlike the rest of the kids at Castro Valley, she couldn't afford to be reckless in her actions, it was hard enough being the only black girl at school, god knows what people would start saying if they knew her family was about as functional as tap water on a dumpster fire.
But something about Paige made her want to take a dagger to her chest and bleed and bleed, spilling her guts until her soul was bare. Like a drug dazed high, Azzi was sired to her, willing to do anything at her command.
"Not always" Azzi paused "It got really bad when my dad started disappearing for days at a time, under the guise of "business trips", but both us us knew he was cheating on her"
Paige didn't respond yet, letting Azzi get the air off her chest.
"but even before that, I don't think we were ever truly a happy family. My parents we're always more concerned with themselves and our image than they were about loving each other. Sometimes I wonder if they even love me."
A wave of nauseous anger rose in Paige's throat. The though of Azzi as a little girl, never getting to experience the love she deserved. She clenched her fists to calm herself down before responding.
"I can't convince you that your parents do love you, I think that's somewhere they need pay their dues. But what I can tell you is that it's not what you deserve." Paige steadied her voice. "You deserve to be loved unconditionally and wholly. I'm sorry that they couldn't give that to you, but I know how special you are Azzi and I'm not gonna let you forget it"
Paige's words sunk into her skin, they were warm and raw, like an open wound. Paige didn't try to convince her it wasn't true, that her parent's just had a shitty was of loving her. Instead she listened, really listened. Azzi felt the bleeding slow, cauterized by the first person who has really seen her for who she is. Paige Bueckers was stuck in her skin and pulsing in her veins, and suddenly she doesn't like she can live in any other way.
----
The next few weeks of winter break Paige and Azzi became inextricably intertwined. They spent hours on the phone trading stories and rites of life. The mossy patch near the creek in the woods became somewhat of a stronghold for them, they would lay side by side until their lips turned blue and their heartbeats slowed, only to roll over and leech warmth back into each other with tongues in mouths and fingers in hair.
Azzi would take pictures in the woods each time finding a new muse, quietly capturing shots until sunlight slipped from the sky and darkness blurred her lens. Paige watched her closely, and when she wasn't looking she would take out her notebook and sketch Azzi with soft pen strokes and smudges. She would slip them into Azzi's back pocket or her back pack for her to find later. Azzi would keep them pressed in between her notebook, sneaking looks at them whenever she was alone. It was strange to see herself from Paige's perspective, sometimes she couldn't even recognize her own face.
"Why do you always draw me when I'm not looking? I could pose for you you know." Azzi asked one day while they were lying on Paige's bed, her head resting on the blonde's chest.
"You're always posing for everyone Az. I like to capture you when you're actually who you are" Paige said, stroking softly up her arm.
Azzi knew it was true, she was constantly putting on a "good face" for everyone in her life. Making sure no one ever felt uncomfortable by her problems or feelings. Sometimes she wondered if she even knew who she really was.
Azzi turned to look Paige in the eyes. "Do you think I am not a genuine person?" she said softly, barely a whisper.
Paige's gaze softened and she stroked her cheek softly.
"I think you're a person who has otherworldly expectations on her and puts other people above herself. But I think the real you, the you underneath it all is the most genuine person I've ever met."
Azzi's eyes glassed over as she shifted, facing Paige head on.
"I don't know why Paige, but you unravel me" Her voice was shaky. "Like every time I am with you I want to rip my heart out of my chest and place it in your hands"
Paige shifted her body so she was on top of her, their faces only inches apart. Azzi looked up at her through dark lashes, their breathing metronomically in sync, before Paige leaned in and pressed their lips together. Paige kissed her with an insatiable hunger that crawled beneath her skin. Her hands found commiseration in Azzi's curls, her nails scratching her scalp with fervor.
Azzi pulled Paige closer with desperation, her hands slipping underneath Paige's white t-shirt pressing into the skin she found there.
Paige presses her mouth to her neck, sucking at the tender skin, drawing a soft whimper from Azzi’s mouth. She felt her hunger spreading like a match in a gas leak. Her fingers moved to the hem of Azzi’s shirt twisting it in her fingers.
“Take it off” Azzi breathed.
Paige tugged her shirt off in one quick motion. Her hands dragged the length of Azzi’s bare chest, her fingertips caressing her chest. Azzi moaned as Paige attached her mouth to the flesh, and slipped her tongue out to take her hardened nipple into her mouth.
Azzi’s hand tightened in her hair, like the room would start spinning if she let go. Paige continued moving her lips across Azzi’s chest, traveling down until she reached the sliver of skin right below her navel. She nipped at the skin before placing a wet kiss where her teeth imprinted. Paige hooked her thumbs into the hem of her pants and gazed up from below.
Azzi nodded her head and lifted her hips to ease her pants down her legs. When she was completely bare, Paige stared at her from between her legs, her face an unreadable mix of adoration and hunger. As she pressed her mouth into the wet center between Azzi’s legs, her hand traveled up the length of the sheets beside her, finding Azzi’s fingertips and lacing her fingers between them.
Azzi’s heart was in Paige’s hands and she was going to hold it until it stopped beating.
--
"Azzi!"
"Azzi wait up!" a breathless Josie ran up to Azzi from behind.
Azzi pulled her headphones from her ears and turned to the girl behind her, her face inviting but her eyes swirling with something more sinister.
"Where have you been? You ditched the last four lacrosse games, and you go totally MIA at lunch?" Josie said, waving her hands dramatically.
"Listen Josie, I'm not really interested in that stuff anymore, no matter how crazy you think it sounds I've moved on from Blake and the rest of that crowd" Azzi said exasperated that her former best friend can't seem to let go of whatever agenda she has for Azzi's life.
Josie just narrowed her eyes and settled her weight onto her hip. "Blake told me he saw you hanging out with Paige last weekend, is that like your new "crowd" or whatever? Weirdo lesbians?"
"She's not what you make her out to be to everyone, Josie. And besides, Paige has nothing to do with the fact that I've moved on. Sorry, you and Blake are just going to have together over it." Azzi responded, too exhausted to argue anymore.
"Well, fine you don't have to hang out with Blake anymore while you're going through whatever weird phase this is. But you have to sit with me at lunch today, I think Matt is gonna prompose today and you promised me you'd be there." Josie said, her voice upturning sweetly, in an insincere manner.
That was the thing about Josie, she had this way of drawing you in, making you feel guilty to get what she wants. No matter how long she spent apart from the girl Azzi couldn't help falling for her spell.
"fine. But this is the last time." Azzi said reluctantly.
---
"Yo, Azzi! I don't even recognize you, it's been so long" Matt joke as he grabbed Azzi in a side hug.
Azzi plastered on a fake smile, willing herself to not say something sarcastic to Matt's stupidity as she took her seat. She tried to avoid eye contact with Blake and his moping expression at the far end of the table. Even after she told him all of the ways he had hurt her, he still blamed Azzi for their breakup and carried around his accusatory blame like a sad rain cloud everywhere he saw her.
Azzi placed her notebook, and her sad peanut butter and jelly sandwich she packed for herself on the table across from Josie, not that she really had any desire to eat at the moment.
"So what have you been up to Azzi? You've missed some killer lacrosse parties dude" said Matt
Azzi sighed, preparing a response to satisfy the dumb jock, but before she could respond she felt Josie snatch her notebook and pull out a stack of slightly crumpled papers.
"Hey, don't touch that-- "
"OH MY GOD" exclaimed Josie dramatically. In her hand she held up the collection of drawings Paige had sketched of Azzi. Some of her behind the camera in the woods, a few others of her sleeping peacefully, each one cornered with a note from Paige.
"Oh my god Paige Bueckers has moved on to her next victim, what a fucking creep!" Josie laughed as she passed around the stack of sketches to Blake and the rest of the lacrosse guys.
"Josie, stop that's not what this is, give them back" Azzi pleaded, panic rising in her chest.
Laughs and exclamations began to echo from the entire lunch table, Azzi's most vulnerable moments turned into a laughing stock for her so called friends.
"Yo, fucking weird ass dyke is stalking Azzi now too" Blake said as he threw the sketch onto the floor.
"Don't call her that" Azzi urged, tears now welling in her eyes.
The attention from most of the cafeteria was on their table now, drawing in curious eyes and taunting laughs.
Josie reached across the table placing her hands atop of Azzi's. She raised her voice loud enough for most of their onlookers to hear. "I'm glad you showed us these Azzi, It really is sad that Paige moved on from her lesbian crush on me to you. At least you know to stay away from her for good now." As she finished her sentence, Josie looked off past Azzi's shoulder behind her.
Azzi turned her head to follow her gaze. Azzi felt her blood rush from her body as her eyes met Paige's standing a few few away, her face scratched with hurt, clearly having been witness to the scene that just played out in front of her.
"Paige wait--" Azzi pleaded, her legs swinging over the bench, outstretched hands rumbling towards the girl in front of her.
Paige turned and began to walk through the cafeteria doors, anger and betrayal coursing through her veins.
"Paige, wait! It's not what you think" Azzi said, placing her hand on her shoulder.
Paige whipped around to face her. "Really? It's not exactly what I saw? You repeating the exact same thing Josie did to me earlier this year?" She spat back.
"No, I swear. I didn't give your sketches to Josie on purpose I--" Azzi's words caught in her throat, overwhelmed with the feeling of trying to prove to Paige none of it was true.
Paige laughed in disappointment. "I'm such an idiot. I can't believe I actually thought what we had was real, when in reality it was all just some joke for you and your friends to laugh about." Paige swallowed in an attempt to stop the tears from flowing.
"Paige, it's not what you think, it was real to me! It was just Josie--" Azzi begged, but Paige cut her off.
"Josie and you are the same, and I'm stupid for trusting you were any different. Please just leave me alone, and spare me from anymore of your little group's torment." Paige said, before turning around and walking down the hall.
Azzi felt tears streaming down her face and her throat closing up. The one person who made her feel whole was walking away from her and it was tearing her apart.
And whenever you’re breezing through (keep tearing my world apart)

Pairing: Azzi Fudd x Paige Bueckers, loser!paige x popular!azzi, skater!paige x photographer!azzi
Summary: Paige is a loner and Azzi is a popular girl. They aren't meant to be friends, let alone lovers. But what happens when they discover they actually aren't as different as it seems?
TW: Homophobia, abuse, sexual content, bullying MINORS DNI
Author's note: Happy Halloween. Ok I have been working on this pic for a bit. I am planning on continuing it as a mini series but I am really excited to get it out. I decided to spare y'all from the angst... for now. but anyways please send feedback/ideas if you like it. Also if you are a Pierce the Veil fan I hope you recognize the title hehe. ok happy reading
Paige is a loser. Plain and simple. There really isn't any other way to put it.
Her wardrobe consists of grey zip up hoodies and faded cargos, she only listens to Deftones and Pierce the Veil, and her hair is permanently in one style: a slick back ponytail politely gelled down and brushed through each morning.
Oh and not to mention, thanks to Josie Alturas who decidedly outed her in Junior year after she trustingly (and stupidly in hindsight) came out to her the previous summer, everyone knows she's a big fat lesbian.
Paige could deal with being an outcast, she was used to being a loner, and was actually very content with her routine of being completely ignored at school, going to the skate park, and sketching away her feelings while listening to MCR in her room.
But when Josie abruptly stopped talking to her the first week of September and the whispers started, Paige went from being unnoticeable, to being deliberately dubbed the school pervert.
"I heard she basically stalked Josie all summer"
"I'm just grateful Josie told everyone, what a creep"
The truth is, Paige really did like Josie that summer-- as a friend, that is. Paige had always been a little different than the rest of the girls in Castro Heights. She played every sport as a kid, she threw a tantrum anytime her mom tried to put her in a dress, and she was in everyway a "tomboy".
Because of her "unconventional" habits she always ended up being friends with the boys in her classes, however, Paige always dreamed of having girl friends (space between the words). Yes she may have different taste (in more ways than one) than the girls in her neighborhood, but beyond surface level appearance and interests, Paige didn't really relate to the boys she hung around, frankly she thought they were kindof dumb and gross (she is a lesbian for god's sake).
So when she and Josie worked at the same ice cream shop one summer, she naively welcomed the friendship into her life. It was nice to have someone to talk about real stuff like feelings and their future aspirations-- getting the hell out of Castro Heights and moving to New York or London. Josie opened up about her body image struggles and listened to Paige vent about her parent's divorce. Josie honestly was a good friend to Paige, that is until Paige revealed the one thing she has never told anyone outside of her dad and her little brother: she's gay.
The fact is, Paige should have known. She knew Mr. Alturas was the pastor at their church and a strict believer in so called "traditional values", she knew Josie's mom was a frequent poster the "Castro Heights High - Parents" Facebook page warning about "un-Christian-like behavior", and she knew Josie's boyfriend was on the lacrosse team known for throwing around slurs just as easily as they threw the lax ball. But Paige was a trusting person, she has always put her faith in the goodness of other people, and when Josie opened up to her about her struggles she thought maybe - just maybe Josie would understand and it would feel so freeing to tell just one person this secret she has been harboring. But the following day when Paige's messages to Josie started showing up as not delivered, she knew that she had royally fucked up.
"Can Paigey take me to the skate park today? pleeeeease dad pleeeease?" Drew begged from the backseat of their dad's HRV.
Paige and her dad chuckled softly at the antics of the 8 year old in the backseat.
"Paigey you said you were gonna teach me a ledge trick next time" Drew whined again.
"Hey-- that was supposed to stay between us!" Paige said in mock annoyance, earning a stern look from her dad.
Drew pushed his lower lip out into a pout in one final attempt to win him over as their dad peered into the rearview mirror.
Finally their dad reluctantly responded "Alright, alright you can go--"
"YESSSSS" cheered Drew, flailing his limbs in excitement.
"But you both better be home before dinner, and make sure to wear your helmet" Bob waved his finger between his two children.
Paige unbuckled her seatbelt and made her way out of the car. "Always do!" she smirked as she shut the door behind her.
"And no ledge tricks!" Bob shouted from the window in a final warning.
"Love you dad" Paige laughed, before stuffing her hands into the pockets of her cargo's, turned up the volume of her headphones and headed towards the school's front doors. Just one more year until she can kiss Castro Valley goodbye and never have to hear the name "Josie Alturas" ever again.
---
28 degrees was warm for December in Castro Heights. Most residents didn’t dare spend more than a few minutes to and from the warmth of their heated cars and homes. So why Azzi Fudd had been kneeling at the edge of the school parking lot for the past fifteen minutes was only a question she herself could answer.
Just across from where she knelt, barely visible from the spot where she sat, there stood two deer, mates —no-- mother and child. The smaller of the two craned its neck towards the ground softly chewing a small weed sprouting from the earth. The mother’s frame was rigid and alert in contrast, hooves positioned neatly over her child’s body.
Azzi twisted the lens of her camera slightly, focusing the frame past the pine branches and locking onto the two beings, oblivious to their onlooker. She let out an exhale, her breath exiting in small puffs of white, crystallized by the winter air. She shifted her knees slightly, the gravel leaving small indents in her skin. Her finger was stiff from the cold as she lowered it and heard the soft click of the camera. The mother deer shuffled slightly before repositioning herself. Azzi raised her finger once more to capture another shot.
“AZZI” a voice split through the quiet.
Azzi’s line of sight landed on Josie angrily strutting her way through the parking lot, beelined towards Azzi.
Before Josie could reach her, Azzi turned her eye back to her camera lens to capture one last shot, but much to her disappointment once she turned her head the deer were gone.
Damnit. Whispered Azzi under her breath.
“Azzi what the hell are you doing?” Josie barked, now standing directly above Azzi.
Azzi ran her tongue over her lips and tightened the cashmere scarf around her neck as she stood. “I just needed some fresh air, it was too stuffy in the cafeteria”
“So you decided to get some fresh air in a parking lot while it’s 28 degrees?” Josie crossed her arms.
Azzi stared off to the side in avoidance and shifted her weight between her legs.
“C’mon Blake and Matt are saving us seats” josie rolled her eyes and grabbed Azzi’s arm, tugging her back towards the school.
“Blake and I broke up, remember?” Azzi dragged her heels as Josie pulled her.
“I do remember actually. And I am still dumbfounded on why you would make such a stupid decision.” Josie waved her free hand in disbelief. “First you break up with Blake, and now I find you kneeling in a parking lot in the freezing cold taking pictures of a bush. Azzi I think you’re starting to show signs of a brain aneurysm.” She huffed and turned her body towards her friend.
Azzi rolled her eyes in discontempt. “Not every girl’s dream is to be a cheerleader and date the captain of the Lacrosse team Josie”
“Actually, I think it is” Josie snarked. “Anyways, loosen up Azzi, I’m sick of this whole depressed loner vibe you’ve had going on since summer.”
Josie turned to face Azzi once again and grabbed both of her hands in her own. “It’s senior year, I want us to have a good time, please just try” she pleaded.
Azzi sighed in defeat. “Fine I’ll come sit with you guys, but I swear to god if Blake starts something I’m leaving”
Josie let out a squeal and dragged Azzi through the hall. “This is gonna be so much fun!”
—-
Clearly Josie’s definition of fun was very different from Azzi’s, because currently she was seated between her ex-boyfriend and his best friend who took it upon themselves to start a spitball tournament in the middle of the cafeteria.
Josie was laughing obnoxiously at the whole thing. Azzi knew she wasn’t stupid enough to find any of it funny, it was all an act appeasing the likes of the lacrosse boys. It was embarrassing when you could see through it, how Josie bent over backwards for the attention of them. Azzi lost count of the amount of times Josie made fun of her to get a boy's attention.
Azzi refocused her attention on the camera in her lap, slowly flipping through the shots. There was something about photography that made the whole world slow down for Azzi. The stillness she felt right before capturing the perfect shot, the lighting dancing on objects in a way only visible through a lens, how when she looked back through her photographs it was like the whole world stopped and transported her back to that exact moment.
Azzi peered up from her camera just in time to see Blake turn from his seat and aim a spitball right towards a grey hoodie with blonde hair peeking out.
“Creep” Blake coughed into his elbow as the spitball bounced off of Paige.
The figure turned to reveal itself as Paige Bueckers, the school's known outcast, and Josie's supposed lesbian stalker. Not that Azzi believed any of that, she of all people knew Josie had a habit of lying to achieve whatever twisted plan she created to cash in on her social capita. But still Azzi never went out of her way to defend Paige from the rumors spread about her, and she felt somewhat cowardly for it.
“You know, you don’t have to be such a dick all the time Blake.” Azzi shouted, loudly enough for the blonde to hear it.
Azzi's eyes found themselves locking onto Paige's. She offered a smirk in solidarity, an attempt to make up for the countless taunts Paige had endured. But much to her disappointment, she was met with a hollow stare.
A reminder that despite her shallow efforts, Azzi was still one of them. Azzi Fudd was a popular girl, who had popular friends and dated boys on the lacrosse team, and Paige Bueckers was a loser and they were destined to be enemies whether they liked it or not.
——
“She’s off, she jumps, AND SHE LANDSS RAHHHHH” Drew ran up and down the skate park cheering, his helmet bobbing back and forth and his knee pads knocking.
Paige had just landed a simple foot-plant trick, one she could practically nail in her sleep, but Drew still cheered just as loudly as he had for every other trick his sister landed. That’s what she loved most about Drew. As much as he got on her nerves, he never failed to make her feel like she was the most special person in the world. Paige was perfect in his eyes, and his adoration for his big sister was unwavering in the face of the world.
it wasn't easy when her mom left, she blamed herself a lot. She spent many nights crying herself to sleep with thoughts of could I have been a better daughter? Could I have loved her better, enough that she would stay? But her feelings got easier with time, and her Dad made sure to remind her how much she was loved in every way he could. There were still times were those thoughts crept back in, but it was moments like these that reminded her she had all the love she needed right here with her Dad and Drew.
"Paigey, can I try a ledge trick now?" Drew huffed out of breath, his helmet slightly lopsided from his previous celebrations.
"Let's start with a simple ollie first buddy. Dad said no ledge tricks, and believe it or not I really don't want an earlier curfew than I already have" Paige patted his shoulder and adjusted his helmet so that it sat straight on his head.
She steadied her little brother on the board and gave him a light shove. She felt her cheeks tighten with a smile watching the 8 year old wobble back and forth on the board. She cupped her hands together and brought them to her mouth, blowing into her palms in an attempt to bring blood flow back to her fingertips.
As she watched Drew she faltered her gaze slightly past the arc of the skate slope and fixed onto a figure crouched behind a camera towards the outskirts of the park. Is that-- is that Azzi Fudd?
Paige felt smoke billowing up inside of her, the chill on her fingertips replaced with pure anger. She took a quick glance at Drew, before marching her way over towards the edge of the park.
"Hey!" Paige shouted as she approached her
"The fuck you think youre doing?" Her voice tore through Azzi's focus, bringing her attention to the 6 foot blonde standing in front of her.
"I-- Sorry-- I was just walking by and I stopped to take some pictures-- and I--" Azzi stammered through her words.
"You what? You stopped to take some pictures to laugh at with your dickhead boyfriend and friends?" Paige spat back
"No I--"
"Listen I could give two shits if you and Josie spend your time figuring out new ways to humiliate me, but leave Drew out of it" She took a pause and her voice cracked slightly "He's just a kid"
Azzi felt a lump creep up in her throat at the statement, Paige would do anything to protect her brother. "I swear I was just passing by on my walk home, and I-- I saw you and your brother and you both just looked so happy-- and I started taking pictures)
Paige's rigidity staggered slightly, but didn't let her guard down completely. "Right, Azzi Fudd is walking home by herself. Where's your lacrosse captain boyfriend and his BMW?"
"Blake and I-- we're not together anymore." Azzi kicked a loose rock with her toe. "I broke up with him"
"Well why'd you do that?" Paige responded in genuine disbelief.
"Geez, when will people stop asking me that"
"Sorry, sorry. So uh-- you got into photography as like a post-breakup coping mechanism or something...?" The blonde continued.
"No, well yeah, no-- I mean it's kind always been my thing, I just lost interest for a while but I guess not being with Blake made me want to pick it back up again." Azzi's cheeked flushed slightly with embarrassment.
Paige just hummed in acknowledgement, rocking back and forth on her heels.
"I swear-- I wasn't taking pictures to make fun of you. I just have this thing where I like to take photos that capture the emotion of moments--the beauty-- you know, feelings that can only be seen not heard... and well I saw you and your brother you looked so protective of him and..." Azzi trailed off.
"It doesn't matter anyways, I can delete them" Azzi brushed a loose curl out of her face and brought her camera up starting to click through her camera.
"Nah, it's cool." Paige said as she brought a hand towards Azzi's camera to stop the girl from erasing all of the pictures.
"Just maybe ask next time you start taking pictures of people like some sort of private investigator." Paige teased.
Azzi felt herself relax at the comment, letting out a small laugh.
Paige looked the brunette up and down one last time before turning on her heel and walking back towards to skate park.
"Paige!" Azzi called out, jogging after the blonde.
Paige raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"Um... let me send them to you-- the pictures I mean" she said, slipping her backpack off of her shoulder to pull out a pen and rip a piece of paper out of a notebook. She held out the paper and pen towards Paige, urging her to take them from her hands.
"Here. For your number"
Paige was reluctant to accept the offering, but she scribbled her phone number out anyways, and handed back the paper and pen silently.
"See you around Azzi Fudd" Paige said, and turned her back to the curly haired girl, making her way back to Drew.

Sorry for scaring you today. The shots came out nice. - Azzi
Paige scrolled through the photos, stopping at each one. The first 3 were all of her and Drew. One with her steadying his shoulders, holding on tight and he balanced on the board. Another with her arms up, body angled towards her brother as he ran towards her, face mid celebration. The third Paige's brow's furrowed locked onto Drew as he attempted another trick, her gaze unwavering.
It was mesmerizing. The way Paige felt transported back to that exact moment, somehow her emotions clearer and stronger looking at the photographs, it was as if you could see her adoration was projected onto her brother like an all encompassing forcefield.
The last of the two photos were different. Close up shots of Paige by herself, her cheeks and the tip of her nose flushed a dusty rose from the cold, her hands cupped around her mouth, fingertips peeking out of fingerless gloves, and small wisps of white escaping her fingers from hollowed cheeks. It was strange, seeing herself through Azzi's lens. The two have never talked much at all but if you didn't know any better it would have seemed like they have known each other for a lifetime.

Paige
Thanks. You're pretty talented.
Why'd you take the last two?
Azzi
Like I said, I have a thing for capturing beauty.
Was Azzi flirting with her?
——
Azzi wasn't really sure what she was doing with her but it sure did feel like flirting. The words didn't really register in her mind before she’s typing them out and hits send.
Azzi
What are you doing Friday night?
Paige
Drew has a soccer game, my dad and I always go to cheer him on.
Azzi paused for a moment and chewed her lip between her teeth.
Azzi
You can totally say no, but would you mind if I joined? I can take some shots of the team for Drew.
Before she could stare at the words any longer, Azzi flipped her phone face down and buried her face between her hands.
Azzi’s Friday nights usually were reserved for Blake’s lacrosse games, her and Josie would coordinate matching signs and wear their boyfriend’s jerseys. Azzi truly spent most of the time looking out into the woods, wishing she had brought her camera with her, until Josie pulled her out of her trance and reminded her she actually was here for a reason: Blake. Blake who would drag her to an after party at some teammate’s house. Blake who would then get belligerently drunk and Azzi would end up dragging him home. Blake who would try to drunkenly take her clothes off and eventually pass out on the floor after she shoved him off of her one too many times.
Her phone buzzed
Shit said Azzi under her breath before peeking through her fingers and sliding open her messages.
Paige
Game starts at 7

When Paige arrived at the game the last thing she expected to see was Azzi sitting front and center high up in the bleachers. She was wearing a brown trench coat, hugging her arms around her body. Her curls were covered by a red beanie, and a matching cashmere scarf was neatly tucked around her neck. Paige want even sure I’d she would show up let alone early.
“New friend?” Her dad’s voice cut through her reverie. Paige didn’t even realize she was staring.
“No- I mean, kindof” Paige stammered.
“Well your kindof-friend picked a good seat” her dad responded, nodding his head towards the girl seated in the bleachers.
The pair approached the bleachers, climbing till they reached where Azzi sat.
“Hey”
Azzi’s mouth upturned in a small smile. “hey”
“You’re early.” Paige said bluntly.
“Yeah I uh, I like to scope out the scenery and adjust for lighting and stuff when I’m taking photos” Azzi explained.
Paige just hummed in acknowledgment.
Before the awkward silence could progress any further, Paige’s dad stepped in and cut the tension.
“Hi I’m Bob. Paige and Drews dad” he said and extended his hand.
“Azzi” she said taking Bob’s hand. Her dimples peeking out of her smile.
—
Azzi soon discovered that Paige’s cool calm and collected persona completely dissolved when it came to cheering on her brother.
“WOOHOOO LETS GO DREWSKI!” Paige whooped, Bob said echoing her cheers while they both jumped up and down excitedly.
About 3/4 through the game Azzi found herself in sync with the Bueckers’ cheers, screaming her head off anytime Drew charged the ball.
“Cmon cheerleader, you can do better than that” Paige teased and nudged her shoulder.
Azzi threw her head back in a giggle before letting out an ever louder cheer.
The thing is, Azzi never actually wanted to be a cheerleader, her real dream was basketball. But her aspirations were crushed quickly by her parents who urged her to pursue something more “ladylike”. So she started cheerleading, mostly just to appease the likes of her parents and maybe receive an ounce of attention that she so desperately craved. And it worked, for a couple months, but after a few meets that her parents showed up to late they eventually just stopped coming all together. So being here with Paige and her dad watching them cheer on Drew so willfully made Azzi’s heart ache. It felt nice to be a part of a kindof love that felt so unconditional.
“AND WITH A SCORE OF 3-0 BEAVERS WIN” the whole stadium erupted into cheers.
Azzi and the Bueckers jumped up from their seats and roared.
Before she realized it Paige was sweeping Azzi up into a hug, lifting her up so just her tippy toes were on the ground. They stayed in their embrace for a few seconds until Paige’s brain realized what was happening and she pulled away awkwardly.
“Sorry I—“
“PAIGEY” a breathless Drew ran up to them and Paige thanked god for sending an interruption to save her from that interaction.
“Paigey did you see my goal?” Drew said expectantly, wobbling on his cleats.
"Sure did buddy" she said wrapping her arm around the little boy's neck and ruffling his curls.
Suddenly noticing the presence of a third person standing with her dad and sister, turned to look directly at Azzi. "Hi. I'm Drew."
"Hi Drew I'm Azzi. Your sister invited me tonight. I took some pictures, you looked great out there" Azzi smiled.
"Really!? Can I see?" Drew beamed.
Before she could respond Drew was tugging her down to the bench next to them to look through Azzi's camera.
While Drew and Azzi were wrapped up in shuffling through different shots of Drew on the court, Bob bumped shoulders with his daughter.
"So your kind of-friend Azzi? Seems like a nice girl" said Bob, clearly trying to pry for more details.
"yeah she's cool." Said Paige, not pushing further.
"Looks like maybe she's a kid of-crush huh?" He said with a smirk.
Paige cringed at her dad's comment. "Dad-- please we are NOT having this conversation"
"Alright, alright" Bob held up his hands in surrender. "But Paige," he lowered his voice slightly. "Be careful alright? Remember what happened with Josie, I don't want to see you that hurt again" His hand landed on her shoulder.
"I know dad" said Paige, sobering up to the moment. He was right Azzi was still Azzi Fudd, captain of the cheer team and Josie's best friend. Her and Paige were meant to be nothing more than acquaintances.
"Dad! Can Azzi come to dinner? Pleeeeease?" Drew suddenly exclaimed at the rest of his family.
Azzi opened her mouth to protest but before she could say anything Bob's voice cut through. "How can I say no to the champion?" He threw up his arms and guided the rest of their little group towards the parking lot.
--
Azzi fit into the Bueckers' family dinner as if this was her regular Friday night routine. She practiced small talk with her dad with ease, and entertained all of Drew's exuberant ideas and she's not really sure why but it made Paige slightly nauseous.
The four of them were just finishing up when Drew broke through a pause in conversation.
"Azzi are you a lesbian?" he blurted out suddenly.
Both Azzi and Paige nearly choked on their food.
"Because Paige is a lesbian, and if you are too you could be her girlfriend maybe. And then you could eat dinner with us and take pictures of me all the time." The 8 year old rambled.
"Drew oh my god you cannot just ask people that!" Paige groaned and brought her fingers to her temples. "And you can't just go around telling everyone I'm a lesbian" she continued.
Drew cocked his head in confusion "But why not? You are"
Before Paige could argue back, their dad placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Drew, you know we love Paige no matter who she likes, but not everyone is as understanding as you and I. Sometimes people don't have the best intentions in their heart and your sister just wants to protect herself that's all."
Drew nodded slowly, absorbing the information his dad had just bestowed on him, trying to wrap his 8 year old brain around the cruelties of the world.
Paige adverted her gaze from Azzi, a stark reminder of how far Josie's damage had gone. Azzi felt guilt creep up in her, and even though she didn't participate in spreading Josie's rumors, she couldn't help but feel like she had some part in Paige's suffering.
"Well. On that note who wants dessert?"
-----
Long after dishes cleared and dessert was eaten, Paige walked Azzi to the front door.
Paiges hands were shoved into her pockets and her hoodie sleeves bunched up at her elbows. "So, um. Sorry you got roped into joining my crazy family dinner." She rubbed the back of her neck "when Drew sets his mind to something he just...yeah" she trailed off.
"Yeah he's a cool kid" Azzi laughed softly. "Actually it was nice. I can't remember the last time my parents and I all sat down for dinner together, let alone slept in the same house." she said matter of factly. "You guys really love each other. That's rare. You should hold onto that." She said before looking into Paige's eyes.
Paige was taken aback. She had always assumed Azzi's family to be just as perfect as her school life. She never expected them to be dysfunctional, and least of all absent. "Yeah, I can't imagine my life without them."
They both stood face to face, their breaths slightly out of sync and chests beating softly. Something shifted, it was small, a sort of mutual understanding, and Paige felt herself soften. Maybe Azzi wasn't all she made her out to be.
"Um, hey have you ever been down to the creek on the edge of Crow's woods?" Paige asked.
"Uh, no. I never really go past the south point." Azzi said.
"Well I know you like to take pictures and stuff I thought maybe I could take you some time?" Paige proposed.
Azzi bit her lip to stifle a smile. "Yeah, I'd like that"
Paige nodded softly and broke eye contact in attempt to hide her blush as she opened the door seeing Azzi out.
"Goodnight Azzi."
"Goodnight Paige"
----
"You see that one?" Azzi whispered "The way it's circling the smaller one, like it's trying to create a forcefield." She clicked the camera and it shuttered softly.
Paige and Azzi were kneeling by the edge of a koi pond, their shins cushioned by a soft bed of moss. The stillness of the forest allowed for nothing but the sound of slight ripples in the pond and the occasional shutter of the camera lens.
"You really have an eye for this stuff" said Paige as they finally sat back on the moss, Azzi satisfied with her shots.
"Thanks" she said shyly. "I don't know how but I am just always searching for it. Proof of creatures that will do anything to protect one another. That's what brought me to you and your brother that one day. It's kind of my thing"
Paige hummed softly. "Why?" she asked.
Azzi looked at the blonde with confusion.
"Why is that your thing I mean, protection." she clarified
"I don't know" she paused. "I guess maybe I search for it because it's something I've never had." the realization setting into herself too. "My dad is barely around always on some work trip, and my mom she likes to drink, and uh let's just say she's not the most pleasant to be around"
Paige was stunned by Azzi's sudden vulnerability. She had spent so much time hating Josie and her posse, she never stopped to think about them as individuals. "Yeah I never realized how lucky I was to have Drew and my Dad. They're the only things that kept me going when things got really tough"
Azzi felt the same pang of guilt in her chest again "I can't imagine what that could have been like for you" she let out a breath. "For the record, I don't know what happened between you and Josie but, I never believed any of the stories Josie told."
Paige just nodded at her words. She didn't owe her a thank you, but Azzi's compassion struck deeper than she thought.
"Josie and I were friends. Or at least I thought we were, that's all. She made me feel safe and like I could open up to her, like there was someone who finally understood me." Paige smiled at the memory of the start of their friendship. "But then I came out to her. I thought I could trust her, she would accept me." she sucked her teeth at the thought "But almost as if she had amnesia, she immediately turned on me. Completely erased my existence from her world and conjured up some story about my obsession with her to tell everyone at school"
The weight of Paige's words hung in the air. "I just still don't even know why she did it. Like sure you're homophobic, whatever, but why make up a whole fake story?"
Azzi took the other girl's words in and let them sit in her chest. It wasn't just hurt Paige felt, it was confusion. She had trusted Josie, and the fact that she broke that trust broke her.
"That's what Josie does." Azzi said. "She draws people in, makes you feel special, important. And then when she's done with you she tosses you away using you as a pawn to climb whatever new social ladder she's chosen." Azzi pursed her lips "She tried to do the same thing with me when we first met"
Paige furrowed her brows in confusion. She had always assumed Josie and Azzi were best friend through and through.
"When I first moved to Castro Heights, I didn't know anyone, and being the only black girl in a 30 mile radius I didn't think anyone would accept me." Azzi sighed. "And then I met Josie. She took me in and made me feel welcome. She treated me like I belonged."
"It was only a couple months later that she tried to pull the rug from under me. She tried to start rumors about me and my family, using things I told her in confidence against me." Azzi felt her palms getting sweaty just thinking about it. "But, by that time Blake had asked me out and I just made cheer captain, people didn't believe the stories she was telling. I guess I had more "social status" or whatever than her. So she stopped trying to get rid of me altogether. I guess I was more useful to her if I stuck around"
Azzi's story struck Paige deep. She had always thought she was the sole victim of Josie's tyrade. She still felt angry at Josie, but knowing that she wasn't an isolated event maybe made it a little easier.
"Wow I had no idea, I never realized she tried to do the same to anyone else."
Azzi nodded, a mutual understanding sifting between the two girls.
"Why did you stay friends with her?" Paige asked, not with judgement but rather interest in genuinely understanding.
Azzi took a second to think. "I guess it was just easier. I could tuck the real parts of myself away to fit in with the popular crowd. I think that's why I dated Blake for so long. Well, that and the fact that he was my ride to school." They both laughed at that. "I'm not sure what changed, but one day I just woke up and realized I couldn't take it anymore."
"Well for the record, I like this version of you a lot better." Paige said, turning her head to face her.
Now face to face Azzi's eyes locked onto Paige's. She had never looked at Paige like this. At school, the few times they crossed paths, Paige was always hood up and hunched shoulders, shielding herself from anyone who passed her by. But right now, light peeking through the overhead of trees, she saw how beautiful she really was. Blonde wavy locks framed her face in a way that made her look golden. And her eyes, a deep blue, almost hypnotizing, it made Azzi feel like she was falling through the ground beneath them.
Azzi sucked in a breath at their proximity. She reached out and pressed the pads of her fingers to Paige's lips, the warmth bleeding into her fingers like a wine stain. Paige's eyes fluttered close as Azzi dragged her fingers down towards her chin before letting her hand fall. The blonde leaned in, her eyes still shut and pressed her lips onto Azzi's.
It was soft, landing like fresh snow atop grass, so featherlight she almost couldn't feel it if it wasn't for the reminder via the pulse of their heartbeats intertwining.
The softness of their kiss was abruptly ripped away as Paige pulled away from the brunette, the soft beat of her heart transformed into an anxiety riddled metronome.
"shit shit shit" Paige panicked. "Fuck I'm sorry, I don't know why I did that" she stumbled over her words, scrambling to grab her things trying to escape whatever had just transpired between the two girls.
But before she could stand up Azzi reached out and grabbed her face between her hands.
"Paige"
"I'm not Josie" she plead. A mix of reassurance and injury in her tone.
Paige's breathing slowed at that. Her eyes still staring directly into Azzi's, the brown of her corneas draping over her like a weighted blanket.
This time Azzi leaned in. It was hungrier this time, like they were tearing each other apart, flesh convoluting and spilling out of the seams. Azzi's hands fisted in blonde strands and stretched out the collar of Paige's faded t-shirt opening her mouth further to slip past the barrier of her lips. They were tongue tied into each others mouths, Paige's shivers being swallowed by the lips connected to her own. They kissed until their cheeks tinted blue from the lack of oxygen and the air thinned out around them. Only then they pulled apart slowly resting their foreheads against one another, their hands grasping at the moss coated floor in an attempt to ground themselves.
Maybe Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd weren't as different as it seems.
---
1:27 AM
Paige awoke breathless. Her shirt clung to her chest with sweat and her hands trembled underneath her tousled sheets. Outside the wind whipped through the air in a whistle that resembled a scream. Thunder rattled the walls and the windowsill was damp from having left it open a crack.
Paige swung her legs over the side of her bed, making way to the edge of her room to shut the window. When she returned the soft glow of her phone screen revealed itself as the true culprit of her break in slumber.
Incoming call: Azzi Fudd
Paige slid the answer call button and pressed the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" she spoke, her voice still thick with sleep.
On the other end she heard muffled noises and heavy breathing. "Paige?" Azzi let out, suppressing a sob. "I'm sorry I didn't know who else to call" followed by a sniffle.
"Azzi what's going on?" Paige's sudden onset of worry shook the sleep right out of her.
Azzi heaved in a breath. "It's my mom" she paused "She's been drinking. And she won't stop yelling-- she's throwing things-- I don't know where to go" she finally choked out.
Paige didn't take a second to contemplate her response. "I'm coming to get you" already pulling on a sweatshirt and running out of her bedroom door.
---
When they returned to the Bueckers' house both girls were damp from the rain and carefully made their way through the sleeping household, stripped themselves of their wet clothes and slipped underneath the covers.
Azzi's trembling had slowed, but hadn't completely stopped. Paige pulled her against her body, stroking her hair softly, attempting to coax the anxiety out of her. They hadn't spoken full sentences since Paige arrived at Azzi's house to pick her up.
"I'm sorry for waking you up" Azzi finally broke the silence meekly.
"Hey" the blonde placed her fingers underneath her chin so they were face to face. "You don't have to apologize. I'm just happy you're safe" she said, and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
They laid there staring at the ceiling for a while listening to their breathing settle to a comfortable pace. "Does this happen often? You know with your mom?" Paige said.
"The drinking? Yeah. But only every once in a does she get angry and start throwing things at me." she takes a breath "Usually I just lock myself in my room until it's over. But this time, I don't know, I just couldn't take it anymore. That's why I called."
Paige pulled her arms tighter around the girl in her arms. "You shouldn't ever have to do that Azzi. I'm sorry you have been dealing with this so long" she peered directly into her eyes. "I will always come when you call".
Azzi felt her heart split. How could someone who has endured so much hurt, still have so much love to give.
Azzi leaned into her, capturing her lips in a kiss. It steadied her before she deepened it, inhaling the scent of Paige and drinking her in. Hands roamed their bodies, grasping and releasing as if they were dancing and fighting each other at the same time.
Paige drifted her hands across her jaw, letting her fingers trace the length her neck, hovering just above her jugular and pressing slightly, as if to test if she was still among the living. She drifted further, tracing her collarbone down to her torso before slipping her hands underneath the worn in shirt Azzi had borrowed. When her cold fingertips finally met soft skin, Azzi gasped. Her rough fingertips continued to knead skin, smoothing out the goosebumps that had formed.
Paige glided her hands further up Azzi's body until she met the curve of her breast. She grasped lightly, drawing a soft moan from her lips. She continued palming her skin until she reached the waistband on her shorts, fisting the elastic with restraint. Before Paige could push her hand further, her focus was knocked out of her from the feeling of Azzi pinching her nipple between her fingers. She groaned lowly at the sensation, the noise swallowed by the other girl's kiss.
She felt as if she was standing at the edge of a cliff, ready to jump but sacred to take the first step off of the ledge unsure what would meet her in the void below. Paige floated her hands further past the barrier of Azzi's shorts, and moved her hand between the heat she discovered there. She pressed her fingertips into the wetness like crushing ripe fruit, soft and sticky with sugar. The curly haired girl's breaths became shallow and heavy, biting the tissue of her lip to muffle the sounds.
Paige was so drunk on the feeling of the girl next to her, swollen and aching for her touch, she was surprised by the sudden feeling of the girl's fingers threading their way through her folds. Azzi moved softly and tight against her core, as if she was drawing something out of her, like she was bleeding Paige out of a poison she hadn't known she consumed.
They laid face to face, hands moving concurrently, coaxing each other closer and closer to the edge of the cliff. Paige felt them approaching their summit concomitantly. She felt like she was floating and falling at the ground all at the same time. Like she was kneeling at the base of an altar, licking Azzi's feet begging for forbearance until a damn broke and finally swept her off her knees.
As Paige felt her orgasm wash over her, she felt every nerve ending ablaze with angelic touch. she was split down the middle, grasping at her abdomen trying to hold in her organs and stop the bleeding. Azzi Fudd was tearing her apart, and she doesn't want to be put back together.

Maybe now Pazzis will leave the both girls’ families alone… I’m sorry but some of y’all are to blame. You pazzis go around posting whether it’s Lauren(Paige’s sister) or Jon comments, likes or reposts all the time if it’s anything to do with pazzi on here or twitter opening them up to other fanbases on there. Just because you are so fucking insecure about a RELATIONSHIP YOU ARE NOT APART OF.
I thought y’all would’ve learnt your lesson from posting Paige’s sisters stuff everywhere which led to Lauren and Paige getting attacked when other fanbases look for shit… but no you have done the same shit to Jon where now he’s getting attacked and mocked.
Well done pazzis I hope your happy
Leave the girl’s families alone for fuck sake you insecure cunts
I’ve been mia a little on here, trying to finish up writing but I just needed to say something about what has happened. As an abuse and assault survivor what happened to Rickea is heartbreaking and disgusting. These male athletes have been getting away with being violent abuser forever with no repercussions whatsoever. We cat stop speaking out against this. Also it’s disgraceful the way people are even making jokes about the situation, and if you are one of them or make allusions to other couples I hope you rot. If anyone needs a place to talk my inbox is always open. And I genuinely hope he dies a slow and painful death as soon as possible.
