Today's Yap: Nursery Rhymes Baby : Let's Hold Hands EDIT and the fear of dying
As usual, I posted this on twitter a while ago, but since this account has been a bit dead lately I'll post it here too.
Since XA-VAT released this song I've never been the same, I swear I listen to this every day at least once and I never get tired of it. Naturally, I went after the lyrics and became obsessed with finding some meaning. At first I didn't think I would find anything, because XA-VAT's songs are usually more for dancing than paying attention to what they say, I suppose. But I think there is a deeper meaning to this absolute banger, after all.
Okay so, this is pretty obvious: the lyrics are mostly just a bunch of nursery rhymes mixed all together. The rhymes are London Bridge, Humpty Dumpty, a rhyme from the folktale The Juniper Tree, Monday's child and Ring a Ring o' Roses. All of these, with the sole exception of Monday's Child, can be related to death in some way.
Here we go with the lyrics;
"London Bridge is broken down
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
"My brothers and sisters sit under the table
Picking up bury them under the cold marble stones
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay"
Fallen, fallen, my beloved lady
Let's hold hands We all fall down"
London Bridge is falling down
Falling down, falling down
London Bridge is falling down
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again
My brothers and sisters sit under the table
under the cold marble stone
Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace
Wednesday's child is full of woe
Thursday's child has far to go
Friday's child is loving and giving
Saturday's child works hard for his living
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay"
*Children play this one while circling and holding each other hand's, there's also a theory that the rhyme is actually about dying from the bubonic plague and the "We all fall down" literally means to die.
Ah, If you're here now, tell me the rest of Anno's history
僕は一人で部屋に閉じこもり欠片ほどの勇気も出せないよ
I'm locked up in my room all alone, and I can not muster even a shred of courage
あぁ、もし僕が死んでいても言わないでほしいんだお願いさ
Ah, if I'm dead, please, don't tell me
そんなとても悲しい事からは出来るだけ目を背けていたいよね
because I want to look away from such a sad thing as much as possible
I believe they were referencing Anno Mitsumasa. A renowned children's book illustrator who is very popular, especially among the XA-VAT members' gen. They probably grew up reading these books :).
As for the rest of the lyrics, it's actually pretty on the nose what it is about. They are talking about being afraid of death, and prefer not to think about something so sad, so they dress up the concept of dying with nursery rhymes to make it seem less scary, just like we do with children, using euphemisms so as not to shock them with the harsh reality. Still, it's a pretty interesting lyrics because of all the references they used. plus the song is the best thing ever created, definitely my favorite.
