Unlikely Encounters
Michael Afton x Jack Nyras
TW: Mentions of cannibalism, description of a decaying corpse
Jack trekked through the abandoned building that Toby swore he could find food at. So far, the only luck he believed heâd get would get with finding food would be getting some squatter. Regardless, he chose to at least attempt to believe Toby, even if his faith in the younger man was actively depleting by the second the deeper into the building he wandered. The deeper into the run down restaurant he went, the fouler it smelled. Something had died here and was marinating in its own rot, from the scent of things.
As Jack walked, he was stunned into stopping his movements entirely as what appeared to be a corpse walked out of one of the rooms. Great, Toby had sent him after what seemed to be what he could only describe as a zombie. He let out a low growl of frustration at Tobyâs antics, before being surprised by the corpse reacting to his growl. The corpse flinched and turned to look at him, visibly startled by the looming demon at the end of the hallway. The corpse let out a cough, clearly to play off his fear, and adjusted the purple hat resting atop his head before speaking.
âYou uh- you must be Jack.â
Jack responded with a gruff âmhmâ, slowly approaching the individual. He didnât know what to make of this creature before him. Zombies were familiar, he had dealt with things close enough to them to handle it, but a sentient corpse? This was new, and confusing, if not a bit disturbing. The corpse, seemingly sensing Jackâs confusion, elaborated.
âToby said you could help me.â
Jack huffed at that. Of course, he shouldâve known better than to believe a word that came out of Tobyâs mouth. Tobyâs ears mustâve been ringing, as Jackâs phone vibrated in his pocket. He took his phone out, checking to see what it was. Of course, it was a text from Toby:
âHey, sorry for lying to you but my buddy could use your doctor skills :Pâ
Jack rolled his eyes and shut his phone off, looking down at the corpse in front of him. He was annoyed about being lied to, but if he could be of service, he supposed heâd hear the guy out. His focus shifted to the purple hue of this manâs skin. Purple? Well, that wasnât necessarily something he was familiar with, but he supposed corpses could be purple.
âPurple skin. Unique, though I guess not for a decaying corpse.â
âYeah, well, youâre not exactly a sight for sore eyes either, sunshine.â
The corpse responded in a snarky tone, having to look up at Jack due to how much bigger Jack was. Jack crossed his arms over his broad chest, scanning over the corpseâs body. What would a corpse need surgery on? Not like he should be using any faction of his body in his state. Speaking of which, how is this thing even still functioning? He couldnât call the man alive, just look at his skin, but he didnât know what else to refer to the guy as.
âWhat exactly do you need a surgeon for?â
âI was hoping you could remove something for me.â
Jack reluctantly agreed and followed the man around the broken down rooms, trying to find a table or counter that he could at least somewhat sterilize. Even if he was helping a corpse, he didnât feel right operating in a disgusting environment. It went against everything he was taught while he was in medical school. He just couldnât bring himself to dishonor his craft in such a way. So, once they found the cleanest room of this place, which wasnât saying much, he started sterilizing the area to the best of his abilities.
âWhat am I removing?â
âSentient ball of wires, named itself Ennard.â
Jack nodded before stopping after a moment during his cleaning, looking over his shoulder at the corpse. Ennard? Number one, how is a ball of wires sentient, and number two, how does it name itself?
âEnnard- Innards? Seriously? Wow, talk about some grade A creativity.â
âTell me about it.â
The corpse huffed out a laugh. Jack motioned for him to get on the table, and the corpse began unbuttoning his shirt, revealing more purpled skin. Jack watched the man climb up onto the table, noting a tablet in the corner of the room that seemed broken, but still held an employeeâs name. Jack looked a bit more intently, trying to make out the name. It looked like it said-
âEggs Benedict?â
The corpse visibly cringed and groaned in response.
âStupid fucking machine glitched out. Itâs Michael.â
Jack nodded in response, putting gloves on and pulling out his surgical supplies out of his belt and sitting them on the table he had pulled beside the one Michael laid on. Once he was confident he had everything he needed, he began prepping Michaelâs skin, pulling fabric out of the way. Michael seemed a bit nervous before speaking.
âIs this going to hurt?â
âI wonât feel a thing.â
âFucking great.â
Jack couldnât help but smile under his mask at his own joke, but even as cruel as he could be, he wasnât a complete asshole. He moved to toss the alcohol wipes he had into a makeshift garbage bag he had made.
âNo, your nerve endings should all be non functioning by now. You shouldnât feel anything.â
Michael seemed to relax at Jackâs response, which reassured Jack. He pressed the scalpel into the skin, shocked by Michael wincing.
âYou can feel that?â
âI didnât wince for shits and giggles.â
âFascinating. You shouldnât have operational nerve endings.â
âSo you mentioned.â
Jack searched through the pouches on his belt, finding that he had indeed kept numbing solution packed. It seemed this was Michaelâs lucky day. He numbed the area he was operating on, and cut into Michaelâs abdomen. When he moved the skin, he was shocked to see how much of the wires and metal had fused with Michaelâs organs. These wires definitely are the sole reason Michael is still alive, acting in place of a pumping heart it seemed.
âIf I remove these wires, you will more than likely die.â
âIâm already dead. Iâll finally get to actually rest.â
Jack nodded and got to work, removing the wires entangled within Michaelâs organs. The entire process took hours, but he was finally finished. He looked up at Michael, checking if the boy was still alive. It didnât seem to be so, but just to be safe, he tapped the boyâs face lightly, trying to wake him. To his surprise, Michael actually stirred. How in the hell is this boy still alive?
âYouâre still alive?â
âOh for fucks sake.â
Michael groaned, rubbing his face with his hands. Jack sewed him back up and helped him off the table. He didnât think Michael would be best staying in this rundown building for any longer than he already had. These wires had infiltrated his body once, itâd probably happen again.
âYou already know Tobias. Perhaps youâd be better off at the manor.â
âThe manor- what the hell is- do you freaks all live in the same house?â
âYes, thatâs how you should repay my generosity of removing the inner wirings of a mechanical suit from your organs, by calling me a freak.â
âRight, sorry, thank you for taking Ennard out, just wasnât expecting the invite that followed.â
Jack huffed quietly but dropped it, walking out of the room. He waited at the end of the hall until he heard Michaelâs footsteps following, and led the both of them out of the ruins. Michael looked around, letting out almost a gasp of awe. Itâs not like he hadnât been outside before when he was alive, but since he had his body inhabited by that stupid pile of metal, he hadnât been able to get out of the restaurant. The surrounding area had changed a lot since he left, it was a pleasant surprise. He looked around at the city, enjoying the fresh air and the sounds of cars passing on a nearby road.
Jack led Michael through the woods, making sure to tread carefully to avoid losing the man somewhere along the way. There was no telling what Michael would run into out here alone, and Jack didnât necessarily want his patient trying to stand his own against the beasts of the Slender Woods. Soon, they finally arrived at what looked to be a large gothic mansion, somewhere between looking abandoned and just vintage. Jack led Michael in, and immediately headed towards his room, not wanting to have to explain the situation to everyone surrounding them. He preferred to have Michael settle in first, at least.
âYou can stay in my room for now, so I can keep an eye on your stitches.â
âGreat.â
Michael huffed, looking around the room. It was much darker than the rest of the place, somehow, and really fucking creepy. Although, he supposed it was better than being trapped in the pizzeria with his sisterâs corpse. He chose not to think too hard on what had happened to Elizabeth and instead elected to focus on somewhere to sit, assumably where heâd be sleeping. However, he quickly realized there wasnât a chair or couch in this room. He glanced around at the decor before turning his attention back to Jack, clearing his throat awkwardly.
âSo uh, where am I sleeping?â
âThe bed.â
âRight⌠So then where are you sleeping?â
âThe bed.â
âOh.â
Jack turned and raised his eyebrow, not understanding where the confusion came from, or what the sudden awkwardness was for.
âIs that a problem?â
âNah- no- no problem- just- maybe a bit weird?â
âIâm tolerable enough for you to immediately ask something of, but not tolerable enough to share a bed with?â
âNonono! Not at all- you know what? Thank you for sharing your bed with me, quite the generous offer!â
Jack just stared for a while before walking away and towards a chest of drawers. Michael let out a sigh of relief before a small oomph left his lips as a clump of clothes landed against his chest. He grabbed them before looking up at Jack, who so kindly threw them. The dude was freakishly strong if that tiny little toss had enough power to actually elicit a sound out of him just based on impact.
âYou havenât showered in a while.â
âUh, yeah, been a few years, not really any running water down there.â
âSo I smell. You can use my shower.â
âCool, thanks Jacks.â
Jack raised an eyebrow at the nickname, but shrugged it off. It was odd to him to hear someone refer to him in a casual manner like that. He was typically only referred to by his name or an abbreviation of his title, not a term of endearment. Maybe having Michael around wouldnât be so terrible after all. He stripped off his hoodie, instead opting for a more comfortable shirt instead. He then grabbed his book he had been enjoying before Toby sent him off, and relaxed on his bed, reading.
His head popped up when Michael walked out of the bathroom, shirt hanging off one shoulder down to about mid bicep, sweatpants legs pooling over his feet. He looked almost like a child in their parentâs clothing, quite the amusing sight.
âTheyâre a bit big.â
âThey were that size when I handed them to you. Did you expect them to magically mold to the size of your body?â
âOkay, you make me seem stupid when you say it like that.â
âIâm much larger than you, Michael. My clothes are going to fit large on you.â
âWhere the hell do you get clothes this size? Giants R Us?â
âYouâre so amusing Michael. I see the appeal of taking your body.â
Michael rolled his eyes, and walked over to the bed, almost tripping several times in the process. He hopped up, plopping down on the mattress at the foot of the bed, looking at Jackâs mask still on his face.
âYou ever take that thing off?â
âI do when Iâm alone.â
âIf Iâm staying in your room, you donât really get to be alone much.â
âThank you, Sherlock Holmes, I didnât realize that.â
âAlright jackass, I was just saying.â
Michael paused for a moment, his eyes locked on that peculiar blue mask.
âYou can take it off, if youâre comfortable enough to.â
âYou will not be comfortable if I do.â
âIâve seen a lot of freaky shit, Iâm sure Iâll be fine.â
Jackâs head tilted up, as if in doubt of Michaelâs words, but he still obliged. He unclipped the black clasp sitting behind his head, letting his mask fall into the palm of his opposite hand. Michael looked in a mix of fascination and horror at the empty black sockets where Jackâs eyes should be, accompanied by the dark gray skin of his face. He genuinely thought they were gloves until he came in and saw him without the hoodie.
âOkay, gotta admit, havenât seen that one before- Wait a fucking minute. You were operating on me without fucking eyes?!â
Michael exclaimed in horror, realizing that he had been subject to a blind surgeon.
âYes.â
Michael cringed in horror, grumbling to himself about almost dying. He leaned forward, wanting to see what that black liquid pouring out of Jackâs eyes was. He went to touch it when Jackâs clawed hand snapped around his wrist, his face hardening.
âI can still see you, Michael, just not in the traditional sense. Donât touch that.â
That comforted Michael slightly. At least Jack wasnât just prodding at his organs at random, hoping to hit what he was aiming for. However, the clawed hand holding his wrist did make him a bit nervous. He felt his face warm as he took in how close to his face Jack was, and he leaned back a bit.
âGot it, my bad.â
Jack let out a quiet grunt in response.
âItâs getting late. We should get some rest.â
âRight, sure.â
As Jack turned off the lamp he was using to read, Michael climbed into bed, shuffling his legs to get under the blankets. The two laid in bed for a moment, silence enveloping them like a set of wings. Jack laid on his side, back facing Michael as he focused on trying to sleep.
âSo, do you use like echolocation or-â
âGo to sleep, Michael.â
