Lila. A soft name but she used it like a knife, slashing out the first syllable, the second barely a whisper of metal through air.

Are you afraid yet?

They looked at him, at his hulking frame, and assumed that he was stupid. But Mitch wasn’t stupid. In fact, he was smart. Very smart. And when you were that big, and that smart, it was easy to get into trouble.

“We do.” We do, and that is the thing that tempers the heat beneath my skin, checks the flutter of girlish nerves. This is W e s l e y. My  f r i e n d. My  p a r t n e r. Maybe one day my  C r e w. 

Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.

“You asked me if I ever wanted to believe in something. I do. I want to believe in this. I want to believe that there’s more.” Victor sloshed a touch of whiskey over the edge of his glass. “That we could be more. Hell, we could be heroes.”

Her eyes were wide and waiting, but they were already losing their innocence. What little she’d clung to and brought with her down that road in the rain had faded in the face of Victor’s pragmatic execution, his promises and his threats. She’d been betrayed, shot, saved, healed, hurt, healed again, forced to ressurect two men, only to witness the reassassination of one of them.  

Death comes for everyone. I’m not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of dying here.

And so Kell — inspired by the lost city known to all as B l a c k L o n d o n — had given each remaining capital a color.
