Very Very Temporary

Maurice Sendak, from All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy, which used two nursery rhymes to tell a story of society’s castoffs and homeless taking care of each other. It was considered dark and controversial at the time, and yet now, in a different time, similar stories played out in places like Minneapolis are described as offering hope. (Which many others of us saw in Jack and Guy back in the 1990s.)

Remembering the great Maurice Sendak, with gratitude for a lifetime of subversive joy, born 10 June 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. A child of immigrant Polish Jews, he lived the sadness and horror of the Holocaust as a teenager, as many relatives perished in it. That he could channel that grief into the art he did has taught me a lot about lives well lived. He died in Connecticut in 2012.
