Mugshot of Joan Trumpauer Mulholland taken during her arrest on June 8, 1961 in Mississippi. Daughter of a white family from the South, Joan chose to stand against her parents who disowned her, joining the fight against segregation, challenging not only unjust laws, but also the conventions of her time. At the time of her arrest, the activist was just 19 years old, but as a white woman, also from the South, her activism was not accepted and for this reason she was subjected to psychiatric examinations just for having participated in the Freedom Rides, courageous journeys across the South of the United States to challenge racial segregation.
Joan Trumpauer Mulholland is still alive and is a prominent civil rights activist in the United States, best known for her participation in the Freedom Rides and the March on Washington in 1963, as well as being among the first white students to enroll at the black university Tougaloo College.
