I get a lot of questions and see this question asked a lot: "How do you get started with vtubing?" and "I can't afford a 3000$ model, what do I do?" and oh boy do I have the answers for you. 🐰

First off, there are LOTS of different model types. "vtuber" is an umbrella term that covers a wide range: the 2D piloted models, 3D models, PNGTubers and GIFTubers, and more.

📝 PNGTubers:

This is a 2 frame (mouth open and mouth closed) or 4 frame (blinking added) setup that is otherwise completely static. You can use software such as veadotube mini and PNGtuber Plus, both of which are free and pretty easy on the computer.

Veadotube mini swaps between frames and allows for toggles with hot keys. Pngtuber Plus has more lifelike movement and requires you to chop up your model before importing. It does not allow toggles.

I started out this way using a Picrew. If you do this, make sure you use one labelled for commercial use and always read the description! I would not use this long term due to the possible grey area in IP and other legal ish.

🏃‍♀️ GIFTubers:

This is effectively the same as a PNGTuber but its a GIF. Wao. You can import GIFs into veadotube mini and everything applies as above.

🧊 3D Vtubers:

Most commonly these are built for free in vroid studio. If you (rightfully) think the assets in vroid are ugly, go to Booth! There are lots of free assets there and I used many of them in my time as a 3D vtuber. These probably allow toggles but its complicated and I never figured it out.

I used VSeeFace as my software for face tracking, but others do exist, notably Warudo. Warudo has hand tracking and a wider range of motion, but I found this tracking unreliable and it kept opening CMD windows and I got scared.

**THIS IS VERY HEAVY ON YOUR PC. YOU NEED A FULL PC FOR THIS TO FUNCTION ALONGSIDE OBS.**

📃 2D Vtubers:

The ever so sought after models. You can buy cheap pre-mades on etsy and some other sites, but AI "art" is rampant in those cases and I advise you to be very careful.

Most people commission these off vgen, which is where the 3000-5000 or higher price tag comes in. The suiika model is the model I currently use and it ran me about 180$ Canadian, which is wonderful for how customizable and well made it is.
