Vergilās Handwriting
The last reblog also reminded me of this little screenshot I took some weeks ago and that actually made me laugh a little. Because of course Vergil has the fanciest handwriting ever but why on earth does his signature look so dorky in comparison?
Itās like he tried extra hard to impress Dante with his superior penmanship and then just stopped caring at the end and scrawled his name beneath it.
I understand that they probably used two different fonts for the note and the signature for better readability but it still amuses me.

It kills me that Nero has no idea what this book means to Vergil nor the real reason why he gave it to him ahhhhh I need DMC6 right now ;___;
Hold on, Iām cryingĀ
me: ugh im so sick of the focus on vergil in recent dmc media i get that fans and itsuno are insane for him but-
me also upon seeing this: š š š VERGIL SEES NERO AS HIS PROTECTOR AND THE PERSON WHO PULLED HIM FROM DESPAIR AND GAVE HIM HOPE. NERO WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO LISTENED TO HIS CRIES FOR HELP WHEN NO ONE ELSE WOULD THAT'S WHY HE THANKED HIM.
pages that caused me EVEN MORE irrepairable emotional damage, part 2.
When you suddenly realise that āShall I entrust it to him?ā actually means āShall I entrust my heart to him?ā š„ŗš

After skimming the DMC wikiās section about Vergilās personality I tried to skim some more, just because I was curious if I would stumble across anything else that seemed weird to me. (Tried because that article is a nightmare on mobile, it is clearly broken and jumping all over the place.)
Lo and behold:
One day, the man gave Vergil a collection of Blake's poems as a gift, in which Vergil responded by writing his name on the back of the cover. When asked by the man, Vergil told him about his relationship with his brother, and the man understood. Vergil would keep this book throughout his life, even in adulthood.
Nope. Unless the author read a different manga than I did, this is not true.
After his fight with Dante, Vergil ran off to the playground and left his book behind. Eva picked it up and (probably) brought it back inside the house before the demons attacked the house. Much like Vergil, Dante and Eva were probably ambushed, maybe shortly after entering the house because Vergilās book is later seen discarded on the ground.
As soon as she noticed something was wrong, Eva likely cared more about getting Dante to a safe location and finding Vergil than she did about the book - like any sane parent would, really.
(Okay, whether or not a wooden closet in a burning house is really a safe spot for your half-demon child is debatable but thatās another story. Maybe Dante is flame retardant. And if so, Iād love to hear how exactly she found out about that particular gimmick.)
On the playground, Vergil was ambushed and ran back home but the demons followed him and quite literally stabbed him in the back (might be why Vergil hates backstabbing, who knows). After fighting off his attackers with the help of Yamato, Vergil likely entered the house and saw Evaās body, then left without the book. (I say likely because the manga is a little ambiguous about whether or not Vergil truly entered the house.)
Honestly, the poor kid didnāt even look for his brother, I sincerely doubt he wasted even a single thought on that book. Head empty, only fear and grief and rage and shock, probably.
The first time we see the book in the manga, V crawls away from Urizen, scared. He notices the book on the ground and we see a flashback of Vergilās childhood, more or less implying that this is probably the first time in years that V(ergil) even lays eyes upon that book.
V then curls in on himself and holds on to the book as a source of comfort.
And honestly, this scene holds so much more gravitas than it ever could if Vergil had miraculously kept that book for all of those years, even under Mundus.
Because this moment, as V is afraid and dying and thinking of his little brother, is the first time since his whole world fell apart as a child that he openly embraces his humanity - as a source of comfort, no less.
The second time he does it, V is Vergil. What is the first thing Vergil does after being reborn? He picks up that very same book that he left discarded and forgotten for years. I canāt help but think that this is Vergilās first step of coming to terms with his past, and maybe a somber longing for happier days when he could just be Danteās brother and a little boy with a hunger for beauty in life.
And the last thing Vergil does before going back to Hell? He gives that book to Nero with an implicit promise to return to him. Nero holds the last truly happy memories Vergil ever made in his hands. I canāt help but think that this speaks volumes about how Vergil truly feels about his son.
In conclusion, Vergil did not hold on to the Blake anthology for decades. He completely forgot about it and only stumbled across it by chance in his lowest moment. And that is perfectly okay because it was in this lowest of low moments that V probably realized just how precious the things and people were that he discarded throughout his life, much like that book.
pages that caused me irrepairable emotional damage
Oh boy, final chapter.
It ended perfectly, perfect way to give Vergil closure by having his child self comforted, his "heart" - what his book is referred to in this chapter - returned, his enjoyment of fighting with his brother reassured, and his return - which all of this, including of the last chapter with V encounter with Urizen and comforting the crumbling leftovers, even after eating the fruit and becoming king of hell, admitting he's still weak - all of this happening inside Vergil in a flash of a second after V returned himself to Urizen and the facade glass of the Sparda manor (the last place Vergil felt truly safe) created by the Qliphoth crashing down around them.
But going back to the book being Vergil's "heart" thing, it's made clear in this chapter child Vergil never went back to get it meaning the entire time from Vergil's campaign in dmc 4 SE, through dmc 3, up to the moment he spilts himself in 5 Vergilās "heartless" because he doesn't have the book with him, but then V, his humanity personified, finds the book or in other words refines his "heart" and realizes the mistakes everything he - Vergil - has made to this up point and desperately wants to fix it and "recomplete" himself by making it to Urizen no matter the cost; even if he's on the brink of death he has to make things right again. Then at the end of 5 Vergil gives Nero the book - giving him his "heart" and I see that as Vergil coming to full acceptance to Nero's existence after seeing Nero's strength, willpower, and his humanity - I think he sees Nero hasn't went down the path he did and he's proud of that.
I'm going to really miss this manga and all of the development to Vergil's character it brought.
ughhhh so Vergil truly and mistakenly believed that DanteĀ discardedĀ him =(
look at baby Vergilās sad face šššĀ
what kills me more is how not even V is certain that Dante cares about Vergil and wants him back!!Ā
Goddammit, Vergil! Your brother loves you and missed you terriblyĀ Ā
So āfightingā really is the twinās love language, huh? šā¤ļøā¤ļø
And it makes Vergil (and Dante!) soĀ sincerely happy! ugh my heart!
Ogata-sensei, I see and love what you did here.

āLeave me and go, if you donāt want to be trapped in the Demon World. Iām staying. This place, was our fatherās home.ā
Stumbled across a gamerant article and the first sentence just seems to grab my heart and squeeze it. Poor Dante, I didn't know you were scared all this time ;_; can't think of all the boss fights the same anymore.
Incase anybody wants to read the whole thing.
