I love indigenous place names in north america so much because, unlike most european place names that are named after some asshole who claimed it, or like, something in Christendom, our place names are meant to help people easily identify them with major landmarks and water features (most people would be arriving via lake or river). but then you look at the name of a place and it’s like “this is where I saw a lot of wolverines” or “the curved lake at the end of the bend up north” and it’s like. fuck yeah it sure is. and then you look at settler place names and you’re supposed to know the difference between two different St. Johns that are both in the maritimes and it’s like come the Fuck On man

it’s also often an act of quiet diplomacy between communities that have tension or are otherwise feuding to name a place after what you Do there or what you can expect to find. like “this is a good place to harvest salmon. I may not like you very much right now but I also don’t want you to starve”
