Forest cover fell from ~75% in the 1940s to ~21–40% by the 1980s, then rebounded to ~52–60% by the 2010s–2020s. Costa Rica banned deforestation subsidies, expanded protected areas, and launched a national payments‑for‑ecosystem‑services program, making it the first tropical country to reverse deforestation.

I love this project because, as in all things the Monteverde Institute does, they’re always thinking about how to give ownership of this effort and these trees to the local community. Here is a 40 second video of the three-wattled bellbird, one of the major species projected to benefit from this effort. I guarantee you’ve never heard anything like its mating call.
