Fíli had been drinking some ale in the saloon when whispers of a foreigner started going around. He enjoyed the company of the citizen of their little town, and this was a great way to unwind after a busy day helping Thorin make sure the town was in order.

He tried asking around, but the only information he got was that a tall gunman had just arrived in town and was settling in the saloon, but he hadn’t been in the saloon since he arrived. No one knew his name, or whether he was a killer or just carried a gun in case of protection. It was common knowledge in their town that no one needed to go around with guns – fights escalating to gun fighting had them losing many citizens and that wasn’t something they wanted.

Thorin, then, created a rule – not exactly a law, but if someone broke the rule, they’d spend a night in jail – and that made everyone leave their guns at home. The only exception was if the person was a foreigner, which was the case, but since no one else in town had guns on them, they roamed about in fear of this man.

While Fíli thought about how to deal with the situation, the saloon doors opened and a handsome man in a hat entered. Fíli had to give the man a once over because he was drop-dead gorgeous. It was then that Fíli noticed the gun on the man’s waist. So, this was the foreigner everyone was talking about.

The man made his way to the bar and asked for a glass of ale and Fíli, who had been sitting nearby with some acquaintances, stood up and joined him.

“Excuse me.” He said, getting the man’s attention. His features were hard and he looked ready for a fight, so Fíli rose both hands and smiled. “I mean no harm. I just noticed you’re not from around here and wanted to introduce myself. I’m Fíli.” He put a han forward, and the man took it and shook it. A moment later the man smiled – and he had the most beautiful smile that Fíli had ever seen.

Hence I’m rewatching Desperate Romantics and watching Poldark, I decided to finish the work I’d started last year. A4 black paper, coloured pencils [white and grey], white gel pen, time: 5h.

Durin’s Day 2019 - Writer’s Sign-Ups Are Now Open!

We are delighted to announce that we have 5 wonderful artists signed up!

We are looking to sign up 6 writers.

The last person will be our backup in case anyone drops-off (please don’t drop off) or another artist comes forward at the last minute (which is entirely possible).

Sign ups:

This will be done on a first come, first served basis.

To recap this post: you are comitting to write a story at minimum 3k words long. This can be either based on your partner’s existing art, or it can be a new collab you work on together.

To sign up, please drop us a message on GatheringFiKi. Please include: whether you’re signing up as an artist or writer and if you have content outside of tumblr (AO3 / deviantart etc.), please include a link. Also, please let us know if you have any specific pairing needs.

Please note: this is a non-RPF event and you must have at least some existing Fili/Kili, Britchell, DarkHawk etc. content.

It is entirely possible that some overeager organisers might go canvassing during the signup times…

Sign ups will close as soon as we have filled all the spaces and there will be a separate post with the pairs listed.

Hello, hello!

As promised, we will try to run a Durin’s Day Gift Exchange again this year, provided we get a minimum of 10 people signed up :) If we can’t get enough people, we’ll try to run a different event.  

You know how everybody is always going ‘I’d die if  someone drew something based on what I write!’ and ‘I wish someone wrote me something based on what I draw!’? We’re going to make this happen for you!

Now, according to this source, the Durin’s Day this year falls on the 29th of October. What a perfect opportunity to make someone’s day, we thought!

The Plan:

We’re looking to pair up fanartists (including graphics/edits makers) with fanfic authors

If you sign up, you will be expected to create a gift for your partner based on their existing works (art or fic)

I.e. If you’re an artist, you’ll draw / edit something based on the fics of your writer. If you’re a writer, you will write something based on the fanart of your artist.

You can pick anything your partner published so far. You will have a month to familiarise yourself with their works and create your gift. As a bonus, your own work gets some extra exposure too :)

Alternatively, you are welcome to create a new collab together (i.e. story + art). So something based on your partner’s existing work is option 1; something new you write and illustrate together is option 2. Pick one of those.

Guideline effort required: we suggest minimum around 3k words and ah, equivalent in artwork. (how do you quantify artwork?!) Like, decent stuff, folks.

Whatever you create is kept a secret until the 29th of Oct (i.e. Durin’s Day), when everyone posts their gifts.

Please Note:

You agree that someone else creates something based on your work. Could be a spin-off, fanart, little story, graphic etc. But basically it’s somebody else’s interpretation of your universe.

We accept all the usual pairings (i.e. Fili/Kili or any fictional pairings based on Dean’s and Aidan’s characters). However, if you have specific pairing preference, please let us know in the sign-up. E.g. “looking for at least some Britchell content”. We’ll do our best to accommodate, and if we can’t, we’ll contact you.

The worst thing that could happen with this event is if multiple people drop off throughout. Whilst we understand that RL > fandom, please keep in mind that someone else is creating something based on your work and will be looking forward to it just as much as you are. Please keep your partner and us updated with your progress.

Dates:

21 - 24 Sept  - Artist’s signups

24 - 27 Sept - Writer’s signups

28th Sept - Pairs are assigned at random and published in a post

29th Oct - You post your gifts for each other, we reblog them

We will go ahead if we get a minimum of 5 artists and 5 writers signed up.

Please see the dates above - we start with artists simply because we have fewer of those in the fandom.

Once we know how many artists we have on Wed, the 24th of Sept, we will announce how many writers slots we have available, for example: 7 fanartists = we can sign up to 7 writers

This will be done on a first come, first served basis so please keep an eye on tumblr. If we get say, 10 writers interested, the last 3 will be kept on a ‘backup list’ in case anybody drops off.
