        there  are  arms  around  your  waist .  every  now  and  then  you  scan  the  room  for  dustin  just  to  make  sure  he's  still  there .  still  okay .  you  know  he  can  look  after  himself  but  you  have  an  agreement ,  one  built  on  the  foundation  of  a  playground  promise ,  to  ALWAYS  check  in  on  each  other .  a  lot  could  happen  in  a  busy  club  like  this .  even  a  few  too  many  drinks  in ,  you  remember  that .  you  do  not ,  apparently ,  know  your  limits  or  you  would  have  put  a  hold  on  drinks  a  good  hour  ago .  the  arms  around  your  waist  are  there  for  support    it  feels  casual .  in  the  flashing  lights ,  you  could  almost  mistake  the  face  you  look  back  at  for  mike's .  ALMOST .  it  must  be  the  drink .  they  look  nothing  alike .  the  way  he  holds  you  is  a  reminder  of  that  ;  all  you  want  is  for  the  hold  to  turn  possessive ,  like  getting  to  touch  you  is  an  expectation  for  him  and  a  treat  for  anyone  else .  the  way  mike  touches  you  when  you  sneak  away  from  the  party .

         you  lean  back ,  hoping  the  hold  tightens .  it  doesn't .  then  dustin's  there  in  front  of  you ,  voice  filtering  in  through  the  music  PULSING  in  your  ears ,  and  you  really  could  have  sworn  he  was  at  the  bar  a  minute  ago .  " you  sure ? "  you  ask ,  trying  to  keep  the  reluctance  from  your  voice .  no ,  you're  not  quite  ready  to  end  the  night ,  but  if  dustin's  set  on  leaving  then  you'll  be  stumbling  out  of  here  together .  " yeah ,  okay ,  time  to  go .  you  coming  ... "  tilt  your  head  back  to  look  up  at  your  boyfriend  and  realise  a  second  too  late  that  you  can't  remember  his  name  right  now .  that  was  BAD .  you  really  have  had  too  much  to  drink .  not  that  forgetting  his  name  wasn't  a  common  occurrence  for  the  first  month  together .  it  could  happen  to  anyone .  rather  than  try  and  risk  the  wrong  name  slipping  out ,  you  pat  his  arm  as  a  signal  to  let  go .  he  doesn't  even  hesitate .  you  take  a  step  forward  only  to  grab  dustin's  shoulder  for  support .  " this  is  fun .  hasn't  just  been  JUST  you  and  me  after  a  night  out  in  forever .  ready ? "

      sat  on  opposite  sides  of  the  carriage  with  a  body  between  you .  the  smell  of  ROT  is  almost  as  thick  as  the  tension  neither  of  you  have  been  able  to  break .  the  first  time  you've  seen  him  in  person  since  the  journey  there    not  even  hopper  could  get  you  in  to  see  him  after  the  games .  which  was  probably  for  the  best .  would  your  presence  really  have  given  him  any  comfort  after  three  years  of  drifting  apart ?

     probably  not .

      despite  that  distance ,  you  still  know  him .  know  that  the  version  of  mike  that  was  broadcast  to  all  of  panem  was  CUT  and  EDITED  by  the  game  makers  because  he  never  would  have  left  max  in  danger .  he  couldn't  even  leave  her  body  to  make  the  trip  home  alone  despite  having  a  perfectly  fine  bed .  you  knew  he  would  be  HERE  because  you  did  the  same .

     three  years  ago ,  will  byers  has  sat  in  a  carriage  just  like  this ,  beside  a  plain  wood  coffin .  a  new  scar  on  your  face  /  cursed  to  never  get  a  full  nights  sleep  again  /  starting  to  understand  that  the  nightmare  was  only  just  beginning .  you  accompanied  a  redheaded  girl  who  didn't  deserve  that  kind  of  death  all  the  way  back  home ,  only  leaving  the  carriage  when  henry  made  you .  barb  had  only  been  a  year  older  than  max  is  was .   

     and  now  here  is  mike .  with  a  new  scar  cutting  across  his  face  that  will  only  continue  to  fade ,  capitol  surgeons  were  exceptional  at  their  craft ,  accompanying  another  redhead  who's  been  slowly  ROTTING  for  days .  guarding  her  remains  from  the  capitol  in  the  way  he  couldn't  protect  her  in  the  arena .  you  don't  know  what  is  going  through  mike's  head  but  you've  SEEN  this  picture  before .  you  lived  it .

      the  train  should  get  home  tomorrow ,  and  the  new  life  of  a  victor  will  begin .  a  home  in  the  village  is  probably  already  ready  and  his  life  will  continue  to  change  while  he  can't  do  anything  about  it .  you'll  WARN  HIM ,  at  some  point ,  about  the  dark  side  of  this  life  that  you  doubt  hopper  has  ;  from  what  you  know ,  he  suffered  everyone  he  loved  dying  one  by  one .  not  the  being  bought  part .  you  will  warn  mike  that  he  needs  to  start  working  on  a  talent  and  decide  if  he  wants  the  capitol  to  have  this  from  him  too  because  a  part  of  you  still  regrets  letting  them  have  your  art .

      but ,  for  now ,  you  sit  with  a  dead  girl  between  you .  both  of  you  had  failed  to  save  her  but  it  will  be  mike  who  falls  on  that  sword  because  no  one  knows  you  distanced  yourself  to  protect  them  all  from  being  targeted .  the  blame  will  firmly  land  on  him  even  you  know  you  deserve  a  share .  the  least  you  can  do  it  try  to  comfort  him .  at  a  distance .  " they'll  know . "  a  whisper ,  only  audible  because  this  space  is  occupied  by  THREE  GHOSTS .  " the  games  are  always  edited .  cut  up .  they'll  know  you  tried    lucas  will  know  you  didn't  leave  her .  that  it  wasn't  your  fault .  it's  not  who  you  are .
