In case anyone had any doubts about Tom’s motivation. He wanted Red gone from Liz’s life, just as Kaplan did. When Kaplan provided another opportunity for that, he took it. On faith. No questions asked.Â
It never ceases to amuse me. The mental gymnastics people will go through to try and pretend that season one Tom wasn’t a bad guy.

You know why I hate that line? (or one of the reasons) It reminds me of what Tom said to Nik. Tom’s dumbassery coming out of Liz’s mouth.Â
I haaaaaaate it when Tom calls Liz, Lizzy. He only does it a few times, when it really matters, when he needs her to listen. Because that’s Red’s name for her. And of course Tom knows that, since Red was the one to initially hire him. It bugs me so much, though, that Liz doesn’t notice. She notices when Red does it; in episode 1, she told him that her name was Liz, not Lizzy. But when Tom does it? Nothing.
He’s a master manipulator, I hate him, and I hate that they went down the Keen2 road in season 3. They should have killed him off at the end of season 1.Â

I'm glad they killed Tom before delving too deeply into Liz's whole 'what do I do with the fact that my father is a criminal' thing. Because this whole dilemma with Ian and Jennifer vs. Liz and Red would look so incredibly ridiculous with Liz married to Tom still. Arrest your father and go home and kiss your criminal husband. I mean, yeah. Sure she's doing this to avenge him, but at least it's not as glaring.
I always said it was hard to sympathize with Liz's moralizing about Red's criminal world when she was snogging number seven on the blacklist. I like being able to sympathize with Liz again.
