You know what really bothers me? When people compare King Candy to Hans.
That gif sums this up perfectly.
Hans is not a villain. Hoe’s a douche bag. That’s it. His plan to take over Arendelle makes no goddamn sense. But King Candy? His motivation makes a lot of sense. He wants to relieve the days of being the most famous racer of all time. His hubris is what drives him.
Hans has nothing that motivates him.
Okay. I was actually going to post a big rant about this, but this comparison has got me all riled up and I can’t help myself.
The only thing both villains have in common is a reveal. None of the other current/recognizable villains have a big reveal to the audience. Sure, some heroes might be duped into thinking that they’re on the hero’s side (like Scar or Gaston for example) but the audience always knows what’s going on in those cases. Was anyone really shocked that Gothel turned out to be evil? Anyone?
The main difference between both villains was not only their motivation (seriously, what was Hans’ motivation? Being a king? It’s not as easy as it sounds brah), but their foreshadowing. During Wreck-It Ralph, the phrase “going Turbo” was dropped several times early on in the film. However, it was brushed off and the plot continued. When Ralph is brought into the castle, he off-handedly comments on how pink salmon the place is but this is also brushed off with a joke and things move on. After that, we see King Candy tampering with the game’s code, the phrase “going Turbo” is explained by Felix, and King Candy manipulates Ralph into destroying Vanellope’s cart, her chances at racing, and their friendship.
Once King Candy is revealed to be Turbo, and his backstory is elaborated on, everything everything falls into place. The audience is left with a very satisfying reveal. It’s an excellent example of foreshadowing that isn’t heavy-handed.
Hans on the other hand literally had no foreshadowing at all. None. Maybe you can count the scene with the ice chandelier, but that doesn’t exactly scream “He was fooling you all along! Run Anna!” It’s not a scheme, it’s a dick move. No, his eyes darting back and forth does not count as foreshadowing. No, the gloves do not count as foreshadowing. The difference between the reveals is that Frozen tries to trick the audience for shock value, WiR continuously tries to clue the audience in on a conspiracy.
Frozen really did not want anyone to think that Hans would ever be a bad guy, and that’s where Hans fails. I could list a dozen ways they could’ve added foreshadowing, but they didn’t and it’s just sad.
I actually don’t know how I feel about any of these and would really REALLY appreciate input from people about it.
guys this was just the wip so I could get feedback and now it has 230 notes…. the final version will be better…
