“I,” she starts and her voice is shaky, finally turning towards him after wiping her cheeks and eyes one more time despite the fact the tears keep running down her red cheeks. “I couldn’t tell you the truth, Kihwan… Not after knowing about your hatred towards my species. I—- I didn’t want you to hate me, I didn’t want to lose you.” 

She breaks down again, her head is lowered and she’s thankful that her long, silky hair covers her face as she leans against the desk right in the center of the room, doing her best to be quiet as she cries.

“I already loved you and I couldn’t lose you.”

    it hurts — god it hurts so much, kihwan fights to keep himself composed, as he leans against the cold walls of the interrogation room, arms crossed in front of him, he looks up at the ceiling to will the tears to fall back into their places. he doesn't want to show how vulnerable he is, how lost he feels —- betrayed, wronged —- especially in a place he always stood tall and proud, feeling like this feels like a huge contrast that only makes the surge of emotions quicken. he loves her, he still loves her so much that it amplifies the pain, as he watches her face the other way to hide her tears, kihwan is easily able to tell that she is also hurting —- the way her shoulders shake, the intake of short breaths to keep herself composed. and god, no matter the harsh reality, kihwan still can't handle seeing ahreum like this, he wants to run to her, take her in her arms to console her —- but it's not a problem he can solve, it's not even one that he can live with.

   so, he waits, patiently, ignoring the burning in his heart, trying to fight the growing urge to comfort the woman he loves. his ideals and utmost feelings are clashing with another, a thunder of a dilemma within him that he doesn't know how to deal with. the hatred he feels for all vampires isn't something he can forget, and the more he thinks, the more betrayed he feels, wondering and trying to figure out if ahreum ever really cared for him as he did for her. the reality stands in front of him, the way she shakes, how red her eyes are when they meet his — but, he doesn't know what to believe in anymore, let alone the glaring truth. he keeps it quiet when she speaks, teeth sinking into his bottom lip as he listens.

    hate. it's a strong word that falls from her lips, and he doesn't know what to feel — she sounds genuine, pained, even guilty to an extent — but can kihwan believe in her sincerity now that he knows she has been lying to him all along ? pieces start to shift around in his head, that she must have been working with the noctis all along, that she must have lied to him about her job, her parents —- her entire life. so really... does kihwan know the ahn ahreum he cares and loves ? the love she speaks about steals the breath out of his chest, makes another stray tear fall down on his cheeks. he can't stop it, as much as he wants to — he can't. how does he categorize her now ? could the woman he loves more than anything in the world — be the same species he hates more than anything else in the world ? kihwan lets go of his hands to his sides, and clenches them into fists, trying to think — trying to make sense of things. what ahreum just said only makes him feel more lost, confused —- if she were cackling and if she embodied the evil he thinks of vampires to be — would it be any easier ? could he survive it then ? could he simply turn all love into hate and burn it all together ? kihwan doesn't know, and god, at seeing her so genuine, he feels himself breaking apart at the seams.

inevitably, yuchan knew that kihwan was probably going to win this power struggle. the older man was a cop, he dealt with arresting struggling criminals all the time, and it was quite clear to yuchan that he was not going easy on him just because he might happen to care. but just because he knew that he was probably going to lose and end up getting hauled out of here in cuffs didn’t mean he was going to stop struggling as much as he possibly could. he wanted to make it difficult, make kihwan work and maybe even regret intervening in the first place. “you don’t - you don’t get it,” and he doubted that he ever would. he wasn’t in the room, he didn’t know the hurt and the pain yuchan currently felt, the undying rage and need to get his revenge. “it’s has to be me,” and he simply wouldn’t accept anyone else making the bastard pay. not even kihwan would do. the man had to hurt by yuchan’s own hands, yuchan had to look right in his eye as he paid him back for every word out of his mouth, made him regret ever speaking. make sure that he never spoke again. 

being pushed into the ground was actually rather uncomfortable, not to mention kihwan was holding his wrists together at the moment, leaving yuchan nothing but whatever body strength he had and his legs to try and fight back against the man on top of him. and it only spurred him on more when kihwan didn’t follow through with his threat and the stun gun wasn’t brought out. “coward,” he practically growled at the man. and while he knew that he wasn’t cowardice, it was because he cared, but yuchan was not in the mood to play nice. he needed his revenge and kihwan was currently the only one stopping him from getting any. which meant that he was just going to have to deal with all the spiteful remarks. 

what kihwan did do, however, was handcuff him - something that yuchan really didn’t appreciate. “you are a right fucking asshole, you know that? did you maybe consider i don’t give a shit about what will happen?” and he didn’t care about the consequences at the moment. if he ended up in jail on a murder charge, then it was whatever. even as he was pulled up to his feet, yuchan was still fighting it, trying to pull away from the man keeping a grip on him, still trying to get towards the subject of his rage with all his might. not that he knew what he would be able to do now his knife was abandoned on the floor and he was handcuffed. but he knew he would probably think of something. 

   as the younger struggled more, there had to be more power behind kihwan's pushes, and god — if it was someone else, he wouldn't hesitate to strike him down, and possibly arrest them for obstruction of justice. a part of himself still wanted to do that as well, so that it would be a lesson for the younger — but kihwan also knew it would just widen the gap between them, and as it stood, it was as difficult as it was to actually communicate with yuchan. "it doesn't matter if i get it or not — you're not fighting him —-" the chief repeated, words stern, gritted out of his teeth next to the leader's ear. yuchan was so irresponsible sometimes, kihwan couldn't even begin to understand why. for someone with so many responsibilities, it was a miracle that yuchan was still on his feet, standing and healthy. kihwan wanted to keep it that way — but he wasn't sure he could sometimes. god knows what would have happened if he got there five minutes later. he would have a murder charge to take care of, and yuchan would very likely had to serve some time.

    kihwan pretended not to hear the 'coward' comment as he pulled and pushed him towards the door, which was a challenging feat on its own. luckily, his men were careful enough to take the man out of the backdoor, while kihwan and yuchan were going to get out of the entrance to his car. the more distance between the two, easier kihwan could handle yuchan. however, at this point, he was simply getting angrier with the other, perhaps a lot more than he did many times before, because god, how stupid could he be ? the reasoning yuchan gave only infuriated kihwan immensely, and did no favours for kihwan's anger. "maybe you fucking should !" he yelled once they were outside, uncaring if people were staring at them. no one was filming them, so it was fine — and it didn't take long before they made it to his car.

Her smile gets wider and she wraps her arms tighter around his neck, pulling him over to lay on top of her body as she lays on her back. Her face is buried against his skin again and she goes back to kissing his neck, fingers tangling through his messy hair as she scratches his scalp in a slow, soothing manner. Ahreum giggles against his skin, breathy and quiet, after she listens to his response to her question — she feels her heart beat faster at the mere thought of being with him like that, for more than just the morning. “Ah, that’s perfect, my love… I can’t take my hands off you right now.” And she looks at him again, smiling when she leans in to press more kisses to his lips, making a few pauses to speak. “I have the day off… I’m all yours, handsome.”

    to see her smile wider makes his heart flutter in his chest, fills it with warmth and happiness. kihwan doesn't dare stop looking into her soft brown eyes, and to see she is just as happy only makes his own joy amplify tenfold. he moves the hand at the back of her head to her cheek, caressing the soft skin so gently as if she might break. she is the most precious to him after all, and kihwan knows he would do anything for her, just a simple word to fall from her lips would be taken as an order he couldn't refuse, a frown jarring her features would make him do anything he can to reverse it. and now, she smiles so wide, speaks such lovely words, kihwan truly feels this is too good to be true. she is too good to be true.

    they are both lucky, but kihwan can't help but feel luckier, his string of awful past relationships, death staining every happy memory he had, ahreum is like a beam of light that comes after never-ending darkness —  sun shines on him when he never thought it would again. he is giddy when she utters those words, a wide smile spreads across his face. he makes her happy — the happiest ? god, there is no better compliment to his ears, nothing that could make him happier in response. "likewise, my sun — you make me so happy, you have no idea-" kihwan has always been grumpy, on the edge, alert — vengeful to a fault, and filled with hate more often than not. however, ahreum makes him so... carefree, so filled with happiness, kihwan knows people at work have noticed the huge change in him as well. he behaves the same towards them, but the sheer happiness of having ahreum in his life has changed him for good — and kihwan doesn't mind it at all, he embraces it.

“Kihwan, can—- can we go somewhere else? I will tell you everything and explain myself but, please… not here.” And she reaches for his hands, even though she’s sure that he’s going to pull them away again like he has just done when she touched his face, but she can’t hold herself back — she wants to touch him, she wants him to notice that her feelings haven’t changed: they are real and genuine. Even if it doesn’t matter to him, even if he doesn’t want anything to do with her anymore, she wants him to know her heart is still his.

“I will tell you anything you want to know, darling.”

    he can see the pain in her eyes, and it is more than enough to bring excruciating pain to his own chest. but the idea of betrayal and hurt is too fresh in his mind to take a step back, kihwan still doesn't have his answers, his own questions hang in the air, bitter and filled with hurt. the truth is painfully tangible in the atmosphere, and if it was anyone else, the chief wouldn't hang around for a second more. however — it isn't someone else, kihwan loves ahreum with every bit of his heart, he remembers waking up next to her mere hours before walking into this very building, he remembers the warmth of her body next to him, the fond smiles they exchanged — and then it all comes crashing down. too easily, too quickly, and kihwan doesn't know how to handle it.

    the tears on her face only serve as daggers, and he puts a herculean amount of effort not to reach out and wipe them from her cheeks. to see her cry hurts so much, he wants to reach out and comfort her, he wants to hold ahreum in her arms and never let go. however, she has lied to him — kihwan doesn't know to which extent, he doesn't know how much she lied, but with everything he has gone through, he doesn't know what to do. what he knows is that he wants to learn everything, unfiltered, the complete truth — the fact that she affirms the main question wants him to pull away and leave, but he also still cares too much to do that. he will listen, even if it's the last thing he does.

    "i... yeah, yeah — let's go somewhere private." he lets out alongside a shaky breath, turning his face from her to hide the intensity of his feelings for a short moment. he is afraid that he might cry himself, and is only barely managing not to do so. "follow me —" kihwan begins, one hand almost going to hold her hand but it pauses midway and falls back to his side. it doesn't take long after that to find an empty interrogation room, and he opens the door for her to enter before closing it behind them.

   the promise of her telling everything is both reassuring and painful to say the least — he wants to know everything, but after learning that she's a vampire, he isn't sure how much he can take. vampires have always been his arch-nemesis, whoever they were, kihwan always has seen them as emotionless monsters, monsters who killed his mom and two other loved ones with no remorse. and now... a vampire is standing in front of him, and it's suddenly so difficult to feel hatred for the woman in from of him. kihwan still... loves her, and for that reason, it hurts impossibly to know she has been lying to him all along.

Ahreum’s thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the door she has been staring at for the last couple of minutes, and her eyes widen when she sees him — oh, and the sight of him breaks her heart… He looks desolated, and that’s something she never wished to see. Ever.

“Kihwan,” she says when she gets up from her seat, making her way towards him and resting her hands on his shoulders immediately when she’s close enough to him, her eyes are fixed on his and she barely blinks, trying to avoid the tears that have blurred her vision from falling down her cheeks. “Darling… How are you? Did they treat you well?” And her hands move from his shoulders to his face when she cups his cheeks carefully. “How are you feeling, my love?”

     it feels as if his whole has shifted off axis, so much that when they tell him to leave, they need to repeat it twice before he stands up. there is a whirlwind in his mind, every emotion is revolving around someone in particular, someone who is both the cause of his pain and longing. ahreum. kihwan needs to see her, he needs to talk to her —- everything he has heard in the last hour turned the last couple of months around, threatened to ruin every single good emotion he has gone through, and if he goes a step further, the idea of ahreum being a vampire is inevitable. noctis doesn't accept... humans, they despise humans, just like kihwan despises vampires. but kihwan doesn't despise ahreum — he can't, he couldn't — and that's where a knife twists in his chest, leaving him with more questions than answers.

     when he steps out of the door of the interrogation room, he isn't expecting to see her at all — she is the first thing he sees, and ironically enough, she is also the only thing in his mind. he feels... betrayed in ways he never has felt, that immense love he felt ( feels ) for the woman of his life — now feel like a hoax. was it all... a lie ? he doesn't know — the answer walks towards him, warm hands on his shoulders burn, and for a moment, there is nothing he can do but stare. there is pain in his gaze, his face showcasing how upset he truly is. and he would have never thought a visit to the interrogation room would break him this badly.

    the familiar hands ( soft, tender — was it a lie? ) move up to his face, and without saying anything, kihwan takes a step back, one hand moving up to hold hers and push it down. it isn't strong, or violent — just rejected, firm about the fact that he doesn't want to be touched. not by her, not now. his mouth feels like cotton, and he escapes her burning gaze for a few seconds. her question hangs in the air, but he has no idea how to answer it. not when he has burning questions of his own. "ahreum —" is what he lets out, eyes finally meeting hers, red, but not weeping. he will be strong, he won't let himself break in the middle of a corridor — he won't. ( the burning behind his eyes intensify )

it was just his rotten luck that kihwan had shown up in the first place. why did the chief have to come waltzing in the moment that things had taken a turn for the more dramatic? it was almost like the man had a damn ‘yuchan is about to do something’ radar as he always seemed to manage to come in the break things up before they ever got too far. which was always incredibly annoying and pissed him off more at the time, but yuchan had always managed to let it go simply because he knew if he had done any more damage then he could very easily end up in jail. kihwan might be good, but there were some things that even the chief of police couldn’t fix. but, at the moment while he was pinned to the ground and fuming with a burning rage, he just wished the man would piss off and vanishing into thin air just so he could get back to jumping the prick and finishing the job like he had been planning on doing.

   it was much more difficult to hold yuchan in place than he thought, even though kihwan had the muscle strength, he also had more than a few years on him and it had been a while since he had as much as energy as the younger. however, as he himself got angrier for the mere childishness the other possessed, it became easier to push him down harder. it wasn't a secret within nightbane that yuchan was prone to get into trouble, that he was difficult to handle — kihwan knew all of those very well himself, but it had been a while since he witnessed it that bad, and the fact that yuchan didn't listen to him at all was more than just enraging. "i will !" he yelled back, his voice dropping a tone so that the bystanders weren't privy to what he was going to say. "i told you i got your fucking back, you don't handle things this way — not this sloppily —" he mutters out, one hand going back to his belt to pick up the handcuffs while the other gripped yuchan's hands as tight as he could.

    truth to be told, he had always been protective over the younger, since his family met their end in such a tragic way that it also left kihwan broken in ways he hadn't felt in such a time — he also knew what it was like to lose a part of your family. that added to the fact that yuchan's parents themselves have told him to take care of the younger — kihwan always had yuchan's back, even though the younger seemed to despise it on most occasions, if not all. which was once again, why he was doing this, why he was still not pulling his stun gun and electrocuting the boy under him. if it was anyone else, he would have done it already, had watched them writhe on the floor — but as it stood, he would do anything to spare the younger from any pain. and if someone blamed him for double standards ? he would make up an excuse, but it wouldn't be the first time he favored yuchan above basic laws.

She walks closely after him, tempted to take a hold of the man’s sleeve just to make sure she wouldn’t miss him among the crowd of people on their way — but she doesn’t. She manages to follow him towards the exit of the bar and smiles at him once they can make visual contact again, taking a deep breath of the fresh and slightly colder air of the city as she walks right next to him. “Don’t worry,” she says, the tone of her voice is a lot lower than it was when they were in the bar, she sounds sweet and gentle as usual. 

“My friend had just left when you arrived, you didn’t interrupt anything.” And her own smile widens as she brings one of her hands up to tug a strand of her dark hair behind her ear. “I have no plans other than to drink a nice and warm cup of tea with you now.”

   to hear a positive answer from her makes him smile, one of the genuine and wide ones regardless of the memories of when he last saw her. it's impossible to separate the memory of ahreum from his late girlfriend just yet... but there is something about her presence that pulls him, something incomprehensible, something he hasn't consciously realized yet. one way or the other, he is sure that he wants to learn more about her, so the affirmation puts him in a better mood than the night had started out. the exhaustion in his body has seem to have diminished for the time being, and he is looking forward to spending time with her more than he would have thought.

   now that they are out in the streets and there is less noise and much better lighting, he takes the sight of her better, and it's not surprising to see that she hasn't changed all that much. it hasn't been so long that they would have aged and physically changed, but this time, he... sees her in a different lighting, and stops himself from following that line of thought; she is just... beautiful. it's an objective statement, he is sure. her words luckily cut that line of thought, and seeing her smile makes him smile in response too, in which he nods again.

    "i'm glad to hear that — really glad, actually." kihwan points out, hiding the sheepishness of the statement by turning his face as they walk together to the café he has mentioned. the air isn't too hot or too cold, so it's a really nice walk, especially since she is there for company. "i didn't have a proper plan to begin with, so it's... really lucky how this turned out." of course he hasn't been expecting to see her, and added on top of that they have the night free, it was a good coincidence indeed. as they continued to walk, he couldn't stop himself from continuing to make small talk. "so, how is work, ahreum ? i'm going to be the worst and ask you what you did again... because it must have slipped my mind."

for a split of a second, haneul wants to refuse. no, a vacant diner in a dodgy alley does not sound okay. it wouldn’t be the first time a scared human tried to, stupidly so, trap him and well frankly haneul knows better than to agree to that. but this is kihwan out of all people and maybe, just maybe haneul is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. so instead he nods and adds a quick “sure,” before he trusts him to lead the way.

the conversation falls silent as they walk, but it’s not the years that has put such a distance between the two men, no it’s what haneul is. a monster in many eyes and all that haneul can ponder on for the moment is how to convince his friend that he’s not. “so how long as it been huh? ten years? eleven?”

     the fact that the other deflects it immediately should be a clue enough, kihwan knows that, he knows he would condemn someone ( in his head, if not legally ) already if it was a stranger. yet again, the problem here is that jaesung isn't a stranger, he isn't someone he can hate so easily. the memories revolving around the older ( now younger? ) has always been positive. jaesung was a stable figure in his life when he needed it the most, a trustworthy brother — a good friend. life isn't all white and black, and this time, kihwan feels lost. he yearns to learn more, so even though he ceases physical contact, he doesn't want to leave. he needs to know more — yet knowledge seems to be painful this time around.

    the positive answer coming from a much too familiar voice makes kihwan nod a few times. "okay, okay — it's this way, hyung —-" he lets out, the word feels wrong on his tongue. can he still call him that ? even with the possiblity that he is one of those monsters ? kihwan foolishly wants to believe it to be false, but the pulsing reality is about to hit him sooner than later when they make their way to the café. but for now, they have some time, little time, mere minutes where kihwan can do his best to act like they are old friends meeting again. that's what he would have wanted after all — that jaesung had aged and grew older, and they would be the same again — and for the few minutes they make their way to the cafe, kihwan decides to fool himself.

Aesin’s eyes scanned over the new weaponry, wondering how Kihwan did this every time – wasn’t there anyone in charge of checking the numbers at the national police? Why did nobody notice? Anywanys, Kihwan must be a professional at his job and at fucking over his job, because there was certainly nobody else like him out there. She looked at all the kinds of pistols and even bigger weaponry like some kind of machine gun seemingly – it just being a long gun, Aesin not really knowing the actual names and terms of them, she just knew they were gonna fire a bunch of bullets through Vladimir. 

She picked up a dark-colored handgun, weighting it in her hands. Surely it felt lighter than her crossbow and would be a great new addition to her collection, just in case she needed to fire at something fast. 

“Which one do you wanna try first?”

    the chief only laughed at the comment, not even disagreeing when she pointed out all vampires were ugly. even if they might not be always so on the outside, kihwan was a firm believer that they were all ugly on the inside after all, so he wasn’t even offended by one bit while she tried to fix her words. he raised one hand to shake it in a manner to say he didn’t mind. “no, that’s all good ! don’t worry — vladimir is as ugly like all vampires.” he turned his head to the mannequin in question, taking in the details of its horrid face before he pulled back and nodded again, unable to stop his grin. “you did a good job — it will be very fun to shoot at him —” as sadistic as it may have sounded, it was simply target-practice, a time to let off some steam together.

    he watched her pick up one of the weapons from the duffle bag, one of the new rifles that was meant to be lighter than usual while packing just as much damage, if not more. kihwan had only tried it a few times when he had given his approval to the research team, but that was months ago before the whole r&d process. they had received the ammo for their task force a couple of days ago, which was when kihwan ’borrowed’ a couple, tweaking the inventory only slightly to get what he needed.

he should have really know that kihwan was not just going to let him blindly attack a man in a rage. the chief of police never had and didn’t suppose for a second that was going to change anytime soon. but just knowing that he was going to be stopped simply made yuchan want to just use his knife before he was stopped. there was no other thought in his head, not the consequences of his actions or what other people might think of him. none of that mattered, all that mattered in that moment was that he got his revenge, made this man regret ever speaking a bad word about his parents and ended with him in the hospital. though he knew that seriously injuring was not going to be good enough, it wouldn’t make the pain stop or the rage or the hurt. not until this man in front of him never got to speak again.

   as expected, yuchan wasn't going to let go just as easily — which meant kihwan needed to put more force into pinning him to the ground than he would have ever liked. the voices could be heard on the background as another group of bystanders tried to calm the other man down, and a part of kihwan hoped that a few more officers were near for some backup, because he wasn't sure if he could cuff them both and drag them to his own police car. as it stood, two of them in the same room was a nightmare, yuchan still fuming with anger underneath him. putting them in the same police car ? now that was an invitation for chaos, and he really hoped one of his underlings were there to help. the chief had no doubt the younger would try to rip the other man to shreds if he had the chance — and kihwan's job there was to stop that from happening.

   his knees tried to stabilize on both sides of yuchan, and his hands gripped the younger's wrists tighter, letting out a little grunt as a knee made contact with his shins. kihwan didn't know just yet what the other man had done —- but going from yuchan's tendencies in the past, he highly suspected it was something to get this much of a reaction for. which is why as the younger refused not to calm down, kihwan began to get a little ( read: a lot ) pissed himself. "what you are doing is damn nonsense —" he groaned out, glaring at the boy as he continued to squirm. "you don't have to make him pay, and you won't !" he spoke with finalized certainty, and realizing he couldn't finish this amicably, he decided to act as if yuchan was one of the criminals he handled every other day.

She nuzzles the skin of his neck and sighs, pressing her lips to the smooth surface as she kisses it gently, slowly, ignoring the fact that she feels the strong and endearing scent of blood from underneath the flesh. It is unbelievable how she can neglect her vampire instincts when she’s with him: she feels no desire to bite.

“Do you have work today? Please, tell me you don’t… I don’t wanna let you go.” Her voice is quiet and sweet when she speaks, with her lips still trailing kisses on his neck and her hands clinging to him tightly. “Let’s stay like this all day, please?”

     as cliché as it may sound, the butterfly in his stomach only amplifies as she smiles wider, his heart skipping a beat at the giggle that leaves her mouth. he melts into the longer kiss, leaning forwards a little to catch her lips for a few seconds more. and when they pull back, his eyes can't help but linger on her mouth just a few seconds more, unable to have enough of her kisses before his eyes trail upwards and his heart soars at the sight of her smiling eyes. "mhmm—" he can only let out, and without being able to stop himself, he leans forward yet again to peck her on the lips. "i am kissing an angel now, you see. who knows how i got so lucky." it's a question he asks himself every day to be completely honest, and he hasn't found answers yet. not that he wants to find them either, he will live in this lovely dream as long as he can. he wants to have ahreum by his side as long as possible.

    his arms wrap around her frame with ease, finding their perfect spots as her body seems to fit right into his. one of his hands run through her soft hair while the other simply holds her tight, and kihwan soon rests his head on top of hers. a content hum leaves his mouth, his eyes closing for a short moment to live the moment to its fullest. it's not as if they haven't done this before, but every single time, his heart is filled with joy — waking up next to ahreum is something he will never get tired of, he is sure. the term of endearment only makes him smile even wider, giddy as if he is a teenager in love. "likewise, darling." he lets out, moving his head softly at the top of hers, enjoying the intimacy of the moment.
